Report: McCain Rips Bush in Woodward Book
September 04, 2008 10:07 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports:
Presidential candidates don't usually welcome stories that quote them using profanity while talking about an incumbent president of their own party.
But the McCain campaign is not complaining about a Fox News report which quotes him voicing his frustration with President Bush on the Iraq war.
"Everything is f---ing spin," McCain is quoted as saying of Bush in a new book by Bob Woodward, according to the Fox report which appeared on its website Thursday.
The story - which was published on the same night that McCain was set to address the Republican National Convention - could help the Arizona senator remind voters of some of his past disagreements with Bush on U.S. troop levels in Iraq.
According to "The War Within," Woodward's forthcoming book, McCain slams Bush's "spin" on the Iraq war while clenching his fist in the West Wing. Woodward, the Washington Post's assistant managing editor who broke the Watergate scandal as a young reporter in the 1970s, claims that McCain made the comment directly to him.
Barack Obama has sought to contrast himself on foreign policy from McCain by touting a speech he gave in 2002 as a state senator in which he came out against the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
"I don’t oppose all wars," Obama said at the time. "What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war."
McCain has countered by focusing not on the authorization of force in 2002 (which he voted for and Obama opposed) but rather on the long-time pressure he placed on President Bush to increase U.S. troop levels in Iraq.
Woodward's book, which runs 487 pages, is his fourth on the Bush administration. Woodward wrote two books praising Bush and a third which sharply criticized him. His most recent book "renders a mixed verdict" according to Bill Sammon, the Fox reporter who obtained an early copy of it.
The book lauds Bush's surge of U.S. troops into Iraq, but criticizes him by saying that "too often he failed to lead."

Dear concerned citizens of America and mass media of the U.S.A.
As a concerned disabled American Veteran and American citizen, I consider it my duty and responsibility to address the following critical issues facing the voters of our Greatgrand nation, the United States of America [USA].
The citizens of the United States of America [USA] have the ultimate power and responsibility to elect the Right Ticket with the right joint "temperament, judgment, and statesmanship" to lead our nation as well as change our nation's present and future moral, political, economic, educational, health care, energy, military, and foundational soul.
In my firm professional, personal, and political opinion, the media should help the common voter to explore and discuss the following attributes of the present Republican and Democratic presidential slates:
1. Does the joint ticket have a calm, cool, and collected " temper and impulse" [Presidential Temperament]?
2. Does each ticket have sound and sustained "Judgment and Caliber"?
3. Does each ticket have a "presidential depth and degree" in regard to their purpose, policies, and positions?
4. Does each ticket have adequate, "understanding and knowledge" of workings around Washington"?
5. Does each ticket have enough "vigor, wisdom and Vision" for the future of our beloved Great-grand Nation?
6. Does each ticket possess enough joint foreign policy experience and ex-poser based on "American Values, Virtues, Vastness, and strong soul"?
7. Are their campaign talk, slogans, ads, plans, and programs based on facts and are they free of fear, fiction, frivolous labels, unfair attacks, negativity, and impulsivity? [Danger to country and countries mission[s].
As a Independent registered voter I have decided to vote for Obama-Biden ticket. I am sure they will protect our national security, Strong's, stamina and strong soul. Rebuild our nation from bottom up in all areas of need, OBAMA-BIDEN ticket will once again restore and rebuild our global standing with the use of maximum international firm diplomacy and minimal force if and when indicated.
Yours sincerely,
COL. A.M. Khajawall [Ret] MD., Forensic psychiatrist, Colonel, US-AR / MC Combat Stress Control[Ret], Disabled American Veteran and Iraq Freedom team.
PS: This nation will not buy into kitchen sink strategy. We are getting deeper into internal and external holes thru these attack and world is laughing on us and enjoying our partisan Pitt Bull wounds. I am sure GOP.RC, FOX, RUSH, ROVE.And McCain's his surrogates will fail to dupe, deceive, and deprive USA its deserved leadership.

Sorry Colonel, you have no idea what it is you are talking about.
A company commander is more qualified to run for President than Barack Obama.
Obama is a corrupt part of the Chicago Democrat machine and he did everything possible to force a humiliating retreat under fire in Iraq.
Obama will never be my Commander in Chief. I'll drop my retirement papers if he wins.

"McCain has countered by focusing not on the authorization of force in 2002 (which he voted for and Obama opposed)"
Funny how it was only McCain's vote of the two which mattered, since Obama wasn't in Congress when that vote was taken.

Obama sucks! Chicago polotics sucks!
With all due respect Col. you're wrong.

Colonel,
You seem marginally literate and full of delusional ideas about what political leadership means, but more than anything else, you sound like an idiot liberal.
Temperament, my ass. Learn some grammar and spare us your unsupported opinions about a couple of liberals, one of whom you apparently know nothing about.

What do you expect from a man who was one second away from going over to the DNC after Bush beat him in '00, and who's best friends are a socalist/ murderer named Ted Kennedy and the quintessental liberal war hawk who allegiance is more to a foreign country than the one in which he currently resides named Joe Lieberman. McCain wanted to put a Democrat on the ticket but had to settle for a woman who pawns herself off as a conservative (Palin) to promote and co-opt the worthless "change" slogan of, wait for it... ANOTHER Democrat! And this is supposed to be a Republican... PLEASE!!! Between the four canidates we have THREE Democrats and one who goes back and forth from either side. This election is an absolute freakin' joke!

To the forensic psychiatrist: The Republican National Convention focused heavily on one issue: If you're not from a military family, you're not a true American. So what's the psychology behind this worldview? Clerical fascism and the religious right? Does someone who longs to share a thirty-year war trauma with America need a shrink?
Posted by: BlackRaiser | Sep 4, 2008 10:51:49 PM
I agree totally with the Colonel. Obama is the way to go. McCain is one bad heartbeat away from kicking the bucket. Do you really want Sarah Palin to be YOUR president? I don't want her to be mine. That's for sure. OBAMA 08!

For months now McCain has been telling the media, "I know how to win wars. I know how to get bin Laden." If he knows how to get bin Laden, why doesn't he share is knowledge with General Patraeus?
What war has McCain won? In an Oct 2007 interview with the Military Times, he acknowledged not having access to secret level military documents.
Go to You Tube and view videos of McCain supporting Bush throughout the war. McCain contradicts McCain.

McCain has a backbone, unlike the jellyfish Obama. After learning more about McCain, he is a hands-down winner.
McCain picked Gov. Palin and she's HOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT !!!

I am a Democrat, and I will surely vote for OBAMA/BIDEN, as will all inteligent, rational citizens.
I will not insult or denigrate my fellow Americans that do not share my beliefs, nor will I try to convince them to change their minds or insist that they are wrong in their difference of opinions or choices or that they need to agree with mine.
Can any Republican here show the same self-respect?
Finally, I would like to emphasize that Sarah Palin has one fine set of headlights and a well rounded rear end that I'd love to put my bumper sticker on! Droooool!!!

Thankfully the conventions are now over.
Having listened to both speeches now, Obama is the better choice. I'm a little concerned with McCain's health after watching him tonight and I certainly would not want Palin as the Pres. She delivered a speech written by George W. Bush's speech writer and when I listened to it I could just imagine George W. Bush saying those same things and then reading today after facts were checked that most of it was farce.
With all of the negativity from the McCain campaign just reminds me too much of the Bush campaigns. Contributed to Obamas' campaign today for the first time.

War hero?
ANYONE can get caught and put in a cell!
The thing he did was serve his country. Every soldier does that! It is their duty. I applaud all soldiers...and McCain is ONE of MANY. If McCain is a War Hero then EVERY soldier is a WAR HERO as well!
I'm sick of hearing this old goat blab about his war hero and "stand up and fight" mentality. If this man is elected, it is the same as BUSH still in the White House. Will America ever learn? McCain is always slandering and jabbing Obama and distorting facts and he put Palin on the ticket to further divide the people of this country into reds and blues. This man is a fighter... all he knows is how to start a fight. America needs a leader with a BRAIN....not the playground BULLY.
American slap happy war mongering needs to stop. We need a leader who will unite us and quit dividing us based upon what is going on inside a woman's womb. Let's start caring about people who are actually ALIVE!!!
America is in SERIOUS economic TROUBLE and this trillion dollar debt problem and housing fallout is just the first of more troubles coming. McCain should be honored for serving his country and think about retiring. His ideas are policies of the past that have gotten our country to the place of destruction. We need a man who can THINK, UNITE, and LEAD us out of this horrible MESS!! Republicans, your party was taken hostage by the ultra rich and financial mismanagement of BUSH AND MCCAIN TOGETHER!! Let's work together for the love of our country and our children of the future who will ultimately be paying dearly for the debts incurred today. Let's work together to rebuild America. I know Obama will unite us into the RED WHITE AND BLUE instead of the American hate war of divided poltics based upon womens' wombs!! Aren't you tired of Red. vs. Blue? This has to stop and McCain just wants to "stand up and fight". We need Obama...strength in ideas, judgement, the ability to unite and inspire all groups of people based upon MUTUAL RESPECT!!!

But, but, but, he's McSame! You know, the only sitting senator in Congress never to take earmarks-as opposed to Bush's wild spending-they're the McSame!
But, but, he was so angry at Bush's smears during the primary,he voted against Bush's tax cuts, and almost became Kerry's veep choice-he's McSame!!!
What many fail to understand is that McCain's positions are alot more nuanced than you've been led to believe.
Poor, poor liberals. You trotted out the same "he's an old crazy warmonger" crap against Reagan, too...who went on to be one of our most popular presidents.
But seriously, go ahead and vote for the guy that wants to take money from our military and hand it over to people who pay no income tax at all. Who has already copped to the biggest tax increase in 60 years that affects us all.
If right now 38% of Americans pay no taxes, is it fair to raise it to almost 50%, as Obama wants to? How can we exist as a thriving nation if half the population is suckling at the government's teat? Is this the great nation that settled the West, and won two World Wars?

As a Disabled American Veteran myself I can only say that my status as a Disabled Veteran gives me no great insight into the worth of a political aspirant.
For COL. Khajawall to put forward his status as a Disabled Veteran as the foundation for his argument in favor of BO insults those of us who may have a difference of opinion.
You seem like a bright man Khajawall. Let your arguments stand for themselves.
Posted by: Zane | Sep 4, 2008 11:52:36 PM
Hey Tina-you know, it's great that you think Obama can unite us. But tell me, if he's so post partisan, and all purplish, how come he's never, ever, crossed the aisle as McCain has to author legislation? I can think of two or three bills that McCain has done this on....and voting with the ENTIRE senate to secure nuclear weapons is hardly a bona fide.
The problem with your assertion is that Obama has voted lockstep with your party 96% of the time.
As far as the trillion dollar debt, your man admitted there's nothing he can do in the short term, and with $863 trillion in new spending, how the hell can you claim he's fiscally responsible?

Obama thinks like a 1960's hippie, has years of association with one who participated in a bombing of the U. S. Capitol, has extensive business associations with a convicted Chicago criminal, and bullies anybody who criticizes him (no president has done this). Obama would be a nightmare for America. What would you expect from somebody raised by an atheist, immersed in Muslim culture for the first 12 years of his life?

Obama is about giving the TAX BREAK to the people WHO NEED IT!! MAKE THE RICH PAY MORE!!!
EDUCATE YOURSELF ON OBAMA. IT IS ABOUT GETTING THE RICH TO QUIT EVADING TAXES, INCREASING THEIR TAX RATE, AND GIVING THE BREAKS TO THE POOR AND MIDDLE CLASS WHO ARE THE PRIMARY TAX PAYERS. The TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT IS THE BURDEN YOUR CHILDREN WILL INHERIT WHILE THE OIL CORPORATIONS PILLAGE THE NATIONAL TREASURY AND MAKE RECORD PROFITS.
THE RICH PUT THEIR MONEY IN OFF SHORE CORPORATIONS!
LOWERING TAXES IS OBAMA'S PLAN. LET THE ULTRA RICH AND THE WEALTHY CORPORATIONS WHO CURRENTLY OWN BUSH AND MCCAIN PAY MORE!!! WHY DO YOU THINK MCCAIN LIES ABOUT OBAMA'S TAX CUTS? HE DOESN'T WANT YOU TO DO YOUR RESEARCH. HIS BUDDIES ARE THE OIL LORDS AND BUSH!! PALIN IS A OIL COMPANY PUPPET TOO! MCCAIN DIDN'T CHANGE THE GOVERNMENT AND WON'T. HE IS THE PROBLEM. BUSH AND MCCAIN ARE THE SAME. PUPPETS for their party owned by the corporations and ultra rich.

Leading up to Obama's selection of Joe Biden, Karl Rove said Tim Kaine, Governor of Virginia, was unqualified to be Vice Pres. because VA was so small. Rove went out of his way to badmouth Kaine because his prior job was Mayor of Richmond. (See The Daily Show with Jon Stewart from Wednesday.) Yesterday of course, Rove was touting the Palin's experience as mayor and governor. God save us all from the GOP leadership.

The news media need to make it clear that Obama wasn't even IN the Senate when the Iraq War vote occured.
So his OPINION meant nothing. Moreover, it was hardly a courageous stand to take given the liberal area he was in.
Its shocking how many people actually think Obama voted against the war.
The news media needs to stop purpetrating this fiction.

We must eventually go beyond the ability to hit and kick another to work out problems. BULLIES are not strong people. They are weak.
Violence is the first act of the mentally incompetent.
Real leaders use words, higher level thinking, ideas, and problem solving skills. They inspire people to work together, not to fight each other.
The word for this is maturity. McCain simply doesn't have this capacity. Sitting in a cell doesn't make for a higher I.Q.
Fighting like a pitt bull doesn't make you a good dog. Our fighting problem and use of violence as a first resort doesn't serve our country now and it won't in the future. We spend more on other nations than on ourself due to WAR. The ultra elite PROFIT from WAR!!! The more they can get us to fight....the richer they become! The more they can pay to craft speeches for those who believe "talk" and don't do their research!

Posted by: reshasheidi | Sep 5, 2008 1:32:01 AM
Tina,
First off, please calm down with the capslock, are you even old enough to vote?
Next, I can understand your sentiments regarding taxing the rich more heavily, it might seem like a fine plan, cause sure, they have much more money than the rest of us, but if you really take the time to look into the details, it doesn't help us out at all.
First off, the rich already are taxed at rates substantially higher than the lower and middle classes. the elite are being taxed at the rate of 35% whereas the lower class will be falling into the 10-15% tax rates.
Secondly, by taxing the corporations, how do you actually think that will help the economy, which is, as i'm sure you know, struggling? If the corporations are taxed at higher rates, they will not be as able to afford capital investments which provide jobs. they may also be forced to cut wages of the people who are already working there, just to stay in business. For our economy to thrive, we need an environment conducive high profits. When the government taxes corporations and the rich, it lowers the incentive for these people to take risks that result in profit. this results in fewer new ventures, and fewer new jobs.
Last, the more profits that we take away from the highest classes, the less they will invest in corporations, and the less the government will reap through capital gains taxes. this results in a double hit, not only are these corportions now not receiving the capital they require to begin new businesses, expand operations and the like, resulting in lower levels of employment as capital becomes less mobile, but less mobile capital will result in much lower revenue through capital gains.
If you want to stimulate the economy, increase the incentives for the rich and the corporations to be more profitable, and they will expand operations in the US, hiring more people, many from the middle and lower classes.
Plus, if taxes were kinder in the US, perhaps there wouldn't be as many off shore corporations for people to put their money into, as you say they do now. these corporations would be more willing to do business in the US, and thus thier profits would be taxed by the US.
Matt K. B.

Matt K. B.
========================================
LOLOL, good one Matt!!! They already do that - for the "new" American workers - in Sri Lanka, China and Vietnam - we call it outsourcing, you numbskull, LOLOL!
...So they can be more profitable - LOL
Here's a typical corporate scenario...
...Corporate CEO says "Gee, we've almost reached our maximum/optimum profit level thanks to government incentives and lax tax breaks/loopholes, so now we can finally start sharing our wealth with the middle-class Americans by starting to pay real taxes, creating jobs we've already shipped overseas and by not being so accustomed to all these great corporate breaks and incentives we have come to take for granted in America!"
And they all lived happily ever after.
THE END

Independant Voice-
I'm not defending Sarah Palin here. I was talking about the next President, John McCain, who has never taken an earmark, unlike Obama, who's gotten a billion for his state in the short time hes been a senator. Biden-BILLIONS in 36 years. So if you want to compare the actions of a small town mayor, to the BILLIONS in earmarks your ticket has produced, I'll wait.
Give me a single instance where Obama fought corruption in Chicago, a city built upon corruption, and I'll concede your "point" about Sarah Palin.
Oh, yeah, forgot. McCain has never voted for a tax increase. But next you'll tell me Obama has done that, I suppose?
Wow, Obama, the transformational candidate. Name the legislation he's produced in the SENATE, sir. Voting along with an entire Senate body on unanimous votes is hardly reaching across the aisle!
Posted by: hippie_chucker | Sep 5, 2008 8:35:16 AM
Try to separate yourself from Bush, John. But, you voted with him 90% of the time. You embrace the radical right just like he does. You're catering to the conservatives and evangelicals who want to force this country into submission to their will. You can't be too much of a maverick or Rush Limbaugh will deliver you to the scorn of the conservatives. You're trapped, John. Face it.

Tina,
You need to focus here. The 'RICH' as you call them, provide all the jobs in our free market economy. Taxing them more takes away money that could be used to hire employees, or used for expansion, etc. A friend of mine has a good job, yet has to give 50% of his hard earned money to the government. Under Obama, it'll be 60%.
It's exactly what happens when you raise the minimum wage. Its a FACT, not my opinion, that many more jobs are cut due to the effects of the raises.
Bluto-
You just contradicted yourself. If you create a environment where business can have lower taxes and less regulation, businesses don't leave, do they?
Ask yourself why all manufacturing in the textile industry left new england, for the south in the 40's and 50's. It was cheaper, right?
If you owned a business, and it was cheaper to operate somewhere else, why wouldnt you do it? Would you open a shoe factory in midtown Manhattan? Think about what you're saying for a bit, perhaps, before posting.

Tina: You are CORRECT!!! Provoking other nations and wasting money on wars that should never happen, is just plain stupid. I travel all over the world and I can honestly tell you, "this administration has given the United States, a bad name overseas." Provoking Russia, in an attempt to get McCain elected, just won't work. Rest assured, McCain couldn't fight his way out of a paper-box. McCain's as Phony as a Football-batter. The only thing McCain can change is his laundry.

I agree with McCain, for once: Everything with Bush/Rove is F***in SPIN. But if he knows that, why did he pick nasty, underqualified Palin to be VP? Why didn't he stand up to the Bush/Rove wing of the GOP? Sad. I'm voting Obama/Biden.

Well, the only thing the negative statements regarding Bush indicates to me is that McBush is willing to throw his mother under the bus if it weans he will win the election. (Loyal today and tomorrow anything goes)

If John McCain knew the Iraq war was all spin by GWB, I'm sure many other repub senators knew it too. Why then didn't they push for GWB's impeachment? McCain screams country first, I don't consider letting a nutjob of a president take us to his ego war as country first. He should have had guts enough to demand an impeachment hearing against GWB instead of letting him kill our troops and innocent Iraqis for a needless wrong war. I don't respect or trust a man who knows someone is doing something wrong and does nothing to stop him. That, in itself, is a crime.

"I am a Hillary supported that after hearing the Palin/McCain speeches will be now voting for blah blah blah blah blah..."
Like that's going to fool anyone but yourselves.
These pathetic Republican "pseudo Hillary people" think they can stand and post everywhere, in front of real Hillary supporters, and pretend their shallow logic has now made them McCain/Palin supporters.
You fools don't even come close to getting it. You people are such obvious victims of the sexist nature of your political party's policies on women that you think we support Hillary because of her tits and shinny white smile.
We support Hillary not only because she is a woman with highly capable intellect, experience and abilities, but because SHE HAS BALLS!!!

LOLOL, Don't forget the phony African-Americans voting for the bloated white presidential ticket, LOLOL!
Poor McCainites, they are resorting to the most pathetic tactics...
The joy I feel the most is that they will now suffer for 8 years+!!!!
RIP Republican Party!

I have been reading several of the posts on this abcnews site and I see a very disturbing pattern. Obama's supporters feel the stage sliding out from under their feet and are hoping for non-American thoughts of the demise of another American's life to remove the competition. Some Americans they are, sad.

McCain votes with Bush 95% of the time, and then throws Bush under the bus? LOL

Hard to follow a record of a vote "PRESENT". Especially with only a handful of votes to compare to hundreds and hundreds.
(Truth is when you can admit you were wrong and wrong is still wrong when it is not admitted.)

Bluto,
Outsourcing is caused by high minimum wages here. It is partially a reactionary tactic due to the poor business climate here, and the difficulty of generating profits in this environment. Most companies would love to keep as many of thier jobs here as possible for a couple of different reasons. but when it comes to the life or death of their corporations, they will choose life.
Outsourcing is a tradeoff like everything else in economics. though there are more factors than these in determining whether to outsource, a substantial tradeoff taken into account is Quality vs Cost. corporations trade high quality (or the perception of high quality) for the lower costs of foreign labor. American made goods generally have a much better perception of quality than goods with the typical "made in china" stickers. nothing against Chinese labor, but that is a general market perception. If the costs of doing business in the US were less, then the trade off would not be worth it in many cases, and the company would be able to make more money with the perception of quality generated by issuing the product as "made in the USA" than it would cost to maintain the labor here.
Also, when looking at outsourcing, realize that not all outsourcing is with the incentive of finding cheaper labor. economies accross the globe do not follow the exact same cycle, and by outsourcing to various countries, corporations are able to diversify and are more likely going to be able to withstand recessions at home.
In many cases it is in the best interest of a company to keep labor at home, but the cost of operating in an environment that is hostile to businesses takes its toll and can tip the scales in favor of outsourcing.

I would say all americans need to realise that if an Mccain/Palinh ticket make it to the white house we are sure to be in another war and if McCains temper and knee jerk responces are any indication it may be on our own land this time Be very afraid Of this ticket

Then we should just sit here and let them come in from the north and south to set up for a multiple bombing siege of our people and infrastructure. We can not let liars and underground terrorist time to organize with diplomacy that would not work any way. Warning first then action. We need to stay on the offensive. They will get us right here at home and America will not survive.

As a doc, my federal + state taxes will increase from 40.3% (2007 actual) to 55% under Obama.
Mr. Obama, I have a modest proposal for you. Take the top 5% of workers, round them up in a pen, and harvest all of their organs - pancreas, kidneys, liver, corneas, lungs, etc - for distribution to the lower 95% of wage-earners. This will tremendously alleviate a huge amount of suffering of people waiting for organ transplants. Moreover, any leftover organs can be sold on international markets to help fund free health care for the 95% of lower wage-earners. It is clearly the greatest good for the greatest number of people and highly utilitarian. A sacrifice by the top 5% will result in a tremendous amount of good for the remaining 95%.

I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who said that the biggest threat to America was the ill informed voter.....well, Obama, if he is to succeed in deceiving America will have to hope for just that. And it appears the good Colonel is one of those ill informed voters Thomas Jefferson was talking about. I guess eloquence is more important to him than experience. Stupid and unintelligent people will put Obama in office if he does win and America will be weaker as a result and I too am a disabled American Veteran. But one who knows what the stakes are.

Why are none of these comments about the actual article talking about Woodward's Book? Sadly you all have fell in line with this sad political process where people cant come together and respect differences. Ridiculous

Taburn6:
It is because there are many racists on these blogs who are voting for Barack Obama because he is black and are avoiding the fact that John McCain has disagreed with Bush many times. It is a black thing not an American thing. The blacks that disagree with them are called fake African-Americans. Little that they know that this country is filled with other minorities that are sick of hearing the race card and will vote for McCain. The Native Americans love McCain, you have Hispanics who love McCain, and you have a massive European minority that came to the U.S in the late '60s that have been discriminated, but look at being an American first and are voting McCain. Then you have many Asians that are voting McCain. Now, we have all been marked as racist, no matter, what you are and where you come from. But, at the end, this race card thing will not pull Obi-One-Conobi to even win this election.

Regarding Bob's book, I find it hard to believe that John McCain all of a sudden is aggrieved by Georgie's "spin". After all, there was never any mention of Osama being the target in Iraq. The whole entire thing was spin. He was probably just having a bad day. John's been practicing some fine spinning himself ever since he cheated on his disabled first wife with Cindy. Did Bob say he stamped his foot too?
