Report: McCain Rips Bush in Woodward Book
September 04, 2008 10:07 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports:
Presidential candidates don't usually welcome stories that quote them using profanity while talking about an incumbent president of their own party.
But the McCain campaign is not complaining about a Fox News report which quotes him voicing his frustration with President Bush on the Iraq war.
"Everything is f---ing spin," McCain is quoted as saying of Bush in a new book by Bob Woodward, according to the Fox report which appeared on its website Thursday.
The story - which was published on the same night that McCain was set to address the Republican National Convention - could help the Arizona senator remind voters of some of his past disagreements with Bush on U.S. troop levels in Iraq.
According to "The War Within," Woodward's forthcoming book, McCain slams Bush's "spin" on the Iraq war while clenching his fist in the West Wing. Woodward, the Washington Post's assistant managing editor who broke the Watergate scandal as a young reporter in the 1970s, claims that McCain made the comment directly to him.
Barack Obama has sought to contrast himself on foreign policy from McCain by touting a speech he gave in 2002 as a state senator in which he came out against the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
"I don’t oppose all wars," Obama said at the time. "What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war."
McCain has countered by focusing not on the authorization of force in 2002 (which he voted for and Obama opposed) but rather on the long-time pressure he placed on President Bush to increase U.S. troop levels in Iraq.
Woodward's book, which runs 487 pages, is his fourth on the Bush administration. Woodward wrote two books praising Bush and a third which sharply criticized him. His most recent book "renders a mixed verdict" according to Bill Sammon, the Fox reporter who obtained an early copy of it.
The book lauds Bush's surge of U.S. troops into Iraq, but criticizes him by saying that "too often he failed to lead."

But, but, but, he's McSame! You know, the only sitting senator in Congress never to take earmarks-as opposed to Bush's wild spending-they're the McSame!
But, but, he was so angry at Bush's smears during the primary,he voted against Bush's tax cuts, and almost became Kerry's veep choice-he's McSame!!!
What many fail to understand is that McCain's positions are alot more nuanced than you've been led to believe.
Poor, poor liberals. You trotted out the same "he's an old crazy warmonger" crap against Reagan, too...who went on to be one of our most popular presidents.
But seriously, go ahead and vote for the guy that wants to take money from our military and hand it over to people who pay no income tax at all. Who has already copped to the biggest tax increase in 60 years that affects us all.
If right now 38% of Americans pay no taxes, is it fair to raise it to almost 50%, as Obama wants to? How can we exist as a thriving nation if half the population is suckling at the government's teat? Is this the great nation that settled the West, and won two World Wars?

As a Disabled American Veteran myself I can only say that my status as a Disabled Veteran gives me no great insight into the worth of a political aspirant.
For COL. Khajawall to put forward his status as a Disabled Veteran as the foundation for his argument in favor of BO insults those of us who may have a difference of opinion.
You seem like a bright man Khajawall. Let your arguments stand for themselves.

Hey Tina-you know, it's great that you think Obama can unite us. But tell me, if he's so post partisan, and all purplish, how come he's never, ever, crossed the aisle as McCain has to author legislation? I can think of two or three bills that McCain has done this on....and voting with the ENTIRE senate to secure nuclear weapons is hardly a bona fide.
The problem with your assertion is that Obama has voted lockstep with your party 96% of the time.
As far as the trillion dollar debt, your man admitted there's nothing he can do in the short term, and with $863 trillion in new spending, how the hell can you claim he's fiscally responsible?

COl. A.M.Khajawall [Ret], you are absolutely
RIGHT! The weak are desparate for any leader
never mind a strong one for their ticket.
They are grasping for straws and oxygen.
I'll bet that when you went for even the smallest
promotion, you were grilled with questions from
dozens of military personnel. This VP was given a
questionaire, a couple of days prior to being
selected!
They say that as Governor she was in charge of
the Alaska National Guard? Every state has a
National Guard in which the Governor is
responsible for, Tis is formality not experience.
Name one city that has no form of curruption and
I'll say that this city has only a one party system
that keeps secrets very well hidden.

Obama thinks like a 1960's hippie, has years of association with one who participated in a bombing of the U. S. Capitol, has extensive business associations with a convicted Chicago criminal, and bullies anybody who criticizes him (no president has done this). Obama would be a nightmare for America. What would you expect from somebody raised by an atheist, immersed in Muslim culture for the first 12 years of his life?

Peter: Your first sentence is an insult to the intelligent and rational citizens who will vote for McCain.

Obama is about giving the TAX BREAK to the people WHO NEED IT!! MAKE THE RICH PAY MORE!!!
EDUCATE YOURSELF ON OBAMA. IT IS ABOUT GETTING THE RICH TO QUIT EVADING TAXES, INCREASING THEIR TAX RATE, AND GIVING THE BREAKS TO THE POOR AND MIDDLE CLASS WHO ARE THE PRIMARY TAX PAYERS. The TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT IS THE BURDEN YOUR CHILDREN WILL INHERIT WHILE THE OIL CORPORATIONS PILLAGE THE NATIONAL TREASURY AND MAKE RECORD PROFITS.
THE RICH PUT THEIR MONEY IN OFF SHORE CORPORATIONS!
LOWERING TAXES IS OBAMA'S PLAN. LET THE ULTRA RICH AND THE WEALTHY CORPORATIONS WHO CURRENTLY OWN BUSH AND MCCAIN PAY MORE!!! WHY DO YOU THINK MCCAIN LIES ABOUT OBAMA'S TAX CUTS? HE DOESN'T WANT YOU TO DO YOUR RESEARCH. HIS BUDDIES ARE THE OIL LORDS AND BUSH!! PALIN IS A OIL COMPANY PUPPET TOO! MCCAIN DIDN'T CHANGE THE GOVERNMENT AND WON'T. HE IS THE PROBLEM. BUSH AND MCCAIN ARE THE SAME. PUPPETS for their party owned by the corporations and ultra rich.

Leading up to Obama's selection of Joe Biden, Karl Rove said Tim Kaine, Governor of Virginia, was unqualified to be Vice Pres. because VA was so small. Rove went out of his way to badmouth Kaine because his prior job was Mayor of Richmond. (See The Daily Show with Jon Stewart from Wednesday.) Yesterday of course, Rove was touting the Palin's experience as mayor and governor. God save us all from the GOP leadership.

The news media need to make it clear that Obama wasn't even IN the Senate when the Iraq War vote occured.
So his OPINION meant nothing. Moreover, it was hardly a courageous stand to take given the liberal area he was in.
Its shocking how many people actually think Obama voted against the war.
The news media needs to stop purpetrating this fiction.

We must eventually go beyond the ability to hit and kick another to work out problems. BULLIES are not strong people. They are weak.
Violence is the first act of the mentally incompetent.
Real leaders use words, higher level thinking, ideas, and problem solving skills. They inspire people to work together, not to fight each other.
The word for this is maturity. McCain simply doesn't have this capacity. Sitting in a cell doesn't make for a higher I.Q.
Fighting like a pitt bull doesn't make you a good dog. Our fighting problem and use of violence as a first resort doesn't serve our country now and it won't in the future. We spend more on other nations than on ourself due to WAR. The ultra elite PROFIT from WAR!!! The more they can get us to fight....the richer they become! The more they can pay to craft speeches for those who believe "talk" and don't do their research!

Peter,
I agree that if anyone cannot accept the difference of opinions or the free speech Constitutional rights of those whose opinions may differ, then those are not true, patriotic Americans.
I also agree that Sarah Palin is one fine Ferrari! Varoooom!

Gov. and soon-to-be Vice President of the
Independent State of Alaska Hockey Team, Palin,
is a failed beta test to see if McCain could
capture the women votes. Had a male with this
limited experience, been chosen, Limbaugh and
the other republican talk show hosts would have
been questioning this, because the majority of
the Governors on McCains list had 10 times the
experience of her. Right now they are trying to save
face
Has she ever written foreign legislation? The
Republicans as well as Democrates pride
themselves in civil rights. How many black people
are members of your cabinet?

If Obama/Biden get elected the American people need to realize they are one heartbeat away from having a catastrophey due to no experience and leadership in the White House in case something happens to Senator Biden.

Sorry Col K, all those qualities apply to McCain/Palin. I'm voting for someone who will protect the US FIRST and FOREMOST.. Someone who won't go to the UN to ask if its OK, someone who won't poll Europe to ask if it's OK.

Tina,
First off, please calm down with the capslock, are you even old enough to vote?
Next, I can understand your sentiments regarding taxing the rich more heavily, it might seem like a fine plan, cause sure, they have much more money than the rest of us, but if you really take the time to look into the details, it doesn't help us out at all.
First off, the rich already are taxed at rates substantially higher than the lower and middle classes. the elite are being taxed at the rate of 35% whereas the lower class will be falling into the 10-15% tax rates.
Secondly, by taxing the corporations, how do you actually think that will help the economy, which is, as i'm sure you know, struggling? If the corporations are taxed at higher rates, they will not be as able to afford capital investments which provide jobs. they may also be forced to cut wages of the people who are already working there, just to stay in business. For our economy to thrive, we need an environment conducive high profits. When the government taxes corporations and the rich, it lowers the incentive for these people to take risks that result in profit. this results in fewer new ventures, and fewer new jobs.
Last, the more profits that we take away from the highest classes, the less they will invest in corporations, and the less the government will reap through capital gains taxes. this results in a double hit, not only are these corportions now not receiving the capital they require to begin new businesses, expand operations and the like, resulting in lower levels of employment as capital becomes less mobile, but less mobile capital will result in much lower revenue through capital gains.
If you want to stimulate the economy, increase the incentives for the rich and the corporations to be more profitable, and they will expand operations in the US, hiring more people, many from the middle and lower classes.
Plus, if taxes were kinder in the US, perhaps there wouldn't be as many off shore corporations for people to put their money into, as you say they do now. these corporations would be more willing to do business in the US, and thus thier profits would be taxed by the US.

After seeing this speech it became awfully clear to me why McSame added Palin to the ticket. He just wanted a glamour queen, just like a movie director adding a few steamy scenes to sell a boring movie. Is this really putting country first???

========================================
LOLOL, good one Matt!!! They already do that - for the "new" American workers - in Sri Lanka, China and Vietnam - we call it outsourcing, you numbskull, LOLOL!
...So they can be more profitable - LOL
Here's a typical corporate scenario...
...Corporate CEO says "Gee, we've almost reached our maximum/optimum profit level thanks to government incentives and lax tax breaks/loopholes, so now we can finally start sharing our wealth with the middle-class Americans by starting to pay real taxes, creating jobs we've already shipped overseas and by not being so accustomed to all these great corporate breaks and incentives we have come to take for granted in America!"
And they all lived happily ever after.
THE END

Hey hippie_chucker....like the rest of the republican base you galvanize your ignorance with your failure to understand fact verse fiction....One of the times Obama crossed the isle is when he passed legislation with the Indiana Republican Senator...sheesh..check your facts...And Sarah Barracuda says she will stop pork barrel spending and earmarks huh?...And Big John says he'll veto any earmark that crosses his desk?...Interesting, their records don't back that kind of behavior up...Palin, during her terms as mayor of itsy-bitsy Wassila and governor of Alaska (a state of less than 700K), took many trips to Washington with her cronies to secure earmarked funds and pork-barrel money...to the tune of 190 million...Now we're to believe she's against it...hmmmm...The lies and hypocrisy goes on..and on...and on with the republican party...But hey, if you say it enough pretty soon you actually will believe even fiction...It's not the GOP...It's the IAH...Ignorant, Arrogant, Hypocrits!!!
