Rice Offers Less-Than-Hearty Palin Endorsement

ABC News' Jonathan Karl Reports: In a weekend interview, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice passed up an opportunity to defend Sarah Palin from allegations that she does not have the foreign policy experience to be vice president.

In a less-than-hearty endorsement, Rice declined to say anything more positive about Palin than "she gave a terrific speech" and "she's a governor of a state here in the United States" during her interview with Zain Verjee of CNN.

Asked point-blank if Palin has enough experience, Rice said, "These are decisions that Senator McCain has made. I have great confidence in him."  Confidence in Palin?  Rice didn't say.

Rice added:  "I’m not going to get involved in this political campaign. As Secretary of State, I don’t do that. But I thought her speech was wonderful."

Comparing Vice President Cheney's foreign policy background Palin's, the interviewer  asked Rice to respond to critics who say  she "just won't be able to handle it."

Rice's response: " There are difference kinds of experience in life that help one to deal with matters of foreign policy."

More Rice:  "You know, she’s governor of a state here in the United States."

Rice also said she'd be the "last" to advise Palin in a foreign policy debate against Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden.

In contrast, Vice President Cheney readily defended Palin's qualifications.  Talking to reporters in Rome on Monday, Cheney said, ""There's no reason why Sarah Palin can't be a successful vice president in a McCain administration."

Rice has an Oboner

Posted by: Edwin | Sep 8, 2008 10:03:38 AM

As a foreign observer of the US elections, I really do want McCain to win in November.

This is not because he is the better than Obama. He will only fast track the downfall of the US as the most powerful country in the world.

America's standing in the world has diminished over the last 8 years and many people in Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe can't wait for it to finally collapse both economically and politically.

History teaches us that empires reign but they also fall at some point. A lot of people outside the US really like Obama and believe that he can lead America back to the position it was during the Clinton years of prosperity and global respect.

However, we dont want him to win because the world is tired of America's dominance. Hence, John McCain will better serve the purpose of finally putting to rest the American dream...ha! ha! ha!

Please vote for the dullard and unintelligent JOHN McCAIN and SARAH PALIN who believes that the world is just 5,000 years old!

A people deserve the type of leader they get.

Palin is Bush...I think our country has gone insane because they keep trying to fix things with the same people who messed them up. Would you keep an employee who has been this incompetant?

Bloomberg takes a look at her academic career. "Interviews with classmates paint a similar picture of Palin as an anonymous, though motivated and hard-working, student who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987. She later told a campus publication that one of her best semesters was spent learning about broadcasting at a student-run Idaho television studio. ‘My sense from people is that she was an average student,' said Kaylene Johnson, author of a biography, ‘Sarah' (Epicenter Press, 2008). ‘I don't know that she distinguished herself in college in any particular way.’”
“Gov. Sarah Palin's church is promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer. ‘You'll be encouraged by the power of God's love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality,’ according to the insert in the bulletin of the Wasilla Bible Church, where Palin has prayed for about six years. … Focus on the Family, a national Christian fundamentalist organization, is conducting the ‘Love Won Out’ Conference in Anchorage, about 30 miles from Wasilla.

“Palin has not publicly expressed a view on the so-called ‘pray away the gay’ movement. Larry Kroon, senior pastor at Palin's church, was not available to discuss the matter, said a church worker who declined to give her name. Gay activists in Alaska said Palin has not worked actively against their interests, but early in her administration she supported a bill to overrule a court decision to block state benefits for gay partners of public employees.”
Lots of profiles this weekend, here's what you need to know out of Newsweek. "Little of her experience will help Palin with the questions she's sure to face in the days and weeks to come. The media (and presumably voters) will aim to find out what Palin believes, what her expertise is and whether she's really prepared to be next in line for the most powerful job on the planet. At last week's Republican convention, the former sportscaster proved she can deliver a terrific speech (written by Matthew Scully, who wrote some of George W. Bush's more memorable lines). But journalists are clamoring for a chance to question her directly. She'll need to have cogent views on Iraq, to know the difference between Sunnis and Shiites (which McCain himself has occasionally confused) and the distinctions between Hizbullah and Al Qaeda. She'll be asked about Iran's nuclear program and China's growing power, about the national debt, the subprime mortgage crisis, America's trade imbalance and the value of the dollar against foreign currencies.”
”Palin started intense tutorials last week in a suite of the Hilton Hotel in downtown Minneapolis. Stephen Biegun, a longtime foreign-policy hand who last worked on George W. Bush's National Security Council, ran what one participant called a ‘boot camp on McCain world.’ Biegun and others briefed her on international issues. McCain's top domestic-policy adviser, economist Douglas Holtz-Eakin, led other sessions. Before Holtz-Eakin even got started, Palin let him know that she likes to get her study points on large index cards. ‘What we have to do is take all our accumulated policy and John McCain's entire Senate history and get her comfortable with the campaign,’ Holtz-Eakin told NEWSWEEK.”
”Others involved in the process say Palin has a long way to go, and they are watching closely to make sure she doesn't get overwhelmed. Over the weekend before the convention, campaign aides made the uncomfortable decision to urge her to go public with her unmarried 17-year-old daughter's pregnancy in order to rebut salacious Internet rumors that the teen was actually the mother of Palin's own newborn child. An aide, speaking anonymously because the matter is sensitive, says that Palin and her husband grew angry about the allegations. "Do I have to show them my stretch marks?" she asked one campaign official. In the midst of the drama, Palin had little time to interact with her family because she was shuffling from one briefing or prep session to another. (In St. Louis, a campaign aide took Todd shopping at a Saks Fifth Avenue, where he bought a new suit to wear to the convention.) At one point McCain, himself tied up in campaign duties, asked an adviser, ‘Can you make sure she's OK?’”
The Seattle Times digs through Palin’s record as mayor of Wasilla. “As much of Palin's hometown rallies with pride around her, 1,400 miles away -- in a National Archives warehouse in Seattle -- three boxes of documents help capture the quality of her mayoral experience. These records, from a federal wrongful-termination lawsuit, include the minutiae of municipal governance, with memos to administrators and personnel records stamped ‘confidential.’ The documents, combined with accounts from her hometown newspaper, show how Palin's first year as mayor could easily have been her last. She became embroiled in personnel challenges, a thwarted attempt to pack the City Council and a standoff with her local newspaper. Her first months were so contentious and polarizing that critics started talking recall.”
“Gov. Sarah Palin used state funds in June when she traveled from Juneau to Wasilla to speak to graduating evangelical students and urge them to fan out through Alaska ‘to make sure God's will be done here,’” the Alaska Daily News writes. “State records show that Palin submitted a travel authorization for a quick round-trip visit to attend the June 8 graduation of the Master's Commission program at the Wasilla Assembly of God, the church where she was baptized at age 12. The only other item on the agenda for that trip was a ‘One Lord Sunday’ service involving a network of Mat-Su Christian churches earlier that morning at the Wasilla sports complex.”

Let's get this straight--Sarah Palin hasn't been corrupted by Washington yet? She comes from the most corrupt state in the country. Alaska gets more earmarks than any state even though it's the second smallest in population. Sarah was in charge the 527 for Ted "I'm the most corrupt Senator in history" Stevens. She is under investigation for abuse of power (and this is not her first time). She has already lied to the American people about the "bridge to nowhere' and her record on reform (hired friends and lobbyists) and taxes (actually raised them). So she may not be in Washington but she certainly is corrupt.

The left is scared shitless and I love it.

Sarah Palin's foreign affairs experience equals or exceeds that of Barack Obama. That is the single reason the Obama campaign and supporters are out to destroy her.

Posted by: Carrie | Sep 8, 2008 10:16:22 AM

Obama made a fatal mistake by not choosing Hillary Clinton as VP.
Sen. Biden's hands are tied he can't debate foreign policy with a "hockey mom" My parent's Democratic super voters are sitting out the election refuse to vote for Obama. We are doomed, Obama's lack of experience and let's be honest his color, will be his defeat.

Barack Obama's foreign affairs experience consists of dealing with the Republics of Indiana and Missouri. If the Democrats valued experience, they should have put Joe Biden at the top of the ticket.

Q. - Why do the Zombomas keep falling?

A. - Because they can only run to the left.

Looks like there are a lot of bitter Americans clinging to their guns and religion that are Palin supporters. Hence, the sudden upturn for McCain in the polls.

I'm hearing a lot of bitter Americans here because their man is loosing credibility with the American people. The people driving Obama's campaign was the media and they have suddenly dropped him like a hot potato for Sarah Palin.

BTW: Did anyone see Obama's interview with Stephanhopolous where Obama said Republicans are putting him down for his Muslim faith? Really? He's finally admitting it either that or its a Freudian slip.
Oh, and I also noticed that Obama has another flip-flop, on the tax hikes due to the recession. Well, I thought he's been running his campaign based on the poor economy and that we NEEDED to have tax hikes to help the economy. Now it turns aout tax hikes would be BAD for the economy. Would this guy please make up his mind, I can't keep track of what his positions are.

I seriously doubt Rice knows much about Palin's foreign policy expertise yet. Rice is going on the same information as the rest of us. I expect that Palin's espoused foreign policies and plans will be a mirror of John McCain's.

Kathleen, I don't know what "Democratic super voters" are, but my half-Democratic family is voting for McCain/Palin, too. We are kind of evenly divided between Dems and Repubs. This will be the first election that I, my mother, and several aunts have voted Republican. My mother even donated to the McCain campaign - something I never thought I'd see in my entire lifetime.

Posted by: Carrie | Sep 8, 2008 10:22:30 AM

Carrie,
Biden has tried to run for president 20 times no one wants him.

Posted by: S Adams | Sep 8, 2008 10:23:33 AM

This is not a bad endorsement. I am sure she wouldn't say Obama is any more ready than Palin. The facts are Biden and McCain are the only two with any credible foreign policy record or history. When you step on Palin why not also complain about Obama. There isn't much difference between the two.

Posted by: rafraf | Sep 8, 2008 10:24:32 AM

S Adams, I saw the interview where Obama forgot he was Christian. Funny, wasn't it? I really don't care about his religion, though. I'd vote for a Muslim if I thought he was qualified. My problem with Obama is the same problem Bill Clinton has with him - he's a Chicago thug.

Posted by: Hokie Freak's better half | Sep 8, 2008 10:24:54 AM

S Adams said, "Biden has tried to run for president 20 times no one wants him." You're right about that. It makes me wonder why Obama chose him, since he didn't last past Iowa. Hmmm. Pass up a woman who got 18 million votes in favor of a man who got less than 1 million. Yeah, that makes sense to me to the Obamabots. Just not to me.

Why people expect minority to fall for Sen BO??? we are smarter than that! Maybe, Mrs. Rice is conserving for the nx elections...

I'm becoming increasingly distressed that I cannot see Palin speaking her mind. It is the tactic of communist governments and dictatorships to control messages, not the United States. Freedom of speech is one of our most powerful rights, and Sarah Palin is willingly forfeiting that right so that her party can properly manipulate her image.

I don't need prepared speeches, in fact I refuse to consider them. I need to see her as she is, not as Karl Rove wants. The longer they keep her under wraps, the more I will assume that she is not ready for public exposure, and if her own backers feel she is not ready for that, there is no way they can claim she is ready to assume the vice presidency.

Let ME decide please. Put Sarah Palin in the spotlight so that I may make an informed choice in the very serious issue of electing my next leaders.
