St. Paul Remains on Guard After Violent Protests

ABC News' Lindsey Ellerson reports: The St. Paul Police Department held a press briefing, Tuesday to discuss the destructive protests that disrupted the streets of St. Paul, Monday and resulted in nearly 300 arrests.

"There were groups yesterday that had an intention to stop the convention and they failed," said Asst. St. Paul Police Chief Matt Bostrom. "The St. Paul Police Department stands with those folks who are here to lawfully follow due process, to follow the law, to follow protests and to have their voices heard. ... We will continue to protect them, protect their rights, fully and effectively."

Due to the violent clashes near the Xcel Energy Center, where the Republican National Convention is being held this week, a total of 283 people were arrested, in addition to approximately 100 misdemeanor charges, 130 felonies and 51 gross misdemeanors, according to the RNC's Joint Information Center.

"We had good info that the tactics of the criminals who were coming to town to blockade and damage property were, in fact, going to follow a certain script. ... They followed that fairly accurately," said Bostrom, regarding the buses and police cars that were damaged.

Bostrom also acknowledged that the search warrants the department obtained ahead of time, "probably prevented the span of criminal activity from being larger."

He did note that a couple of the delegations, including members of either the Alabama or Connecticut delegation, were caught up in the skirmishes when rocks and feces were thrown at their bus.  Bostrom said, "It slowed them down, but did not stop them.

"Thus far, a large number of people who were arrested yesterday have refused to give their names. ... We are struggling to use fingerprints and use any other form of ID."

Bostrom added he is aware of four journalists who were taken into custody during yesterday's riots. One of the reporters, who was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor, attended the briefing and claimed that she and her two producers were taken into custody, despite communicating to law enforcement they were members of the press. The Secret Service told her to put her "face to the ground," and "came over and pulled off our credentials," the journalist told the assistant police chief.

Bostrom would not speak to the reporter's specific situation, but explained, "If we announce we are in the middle of a riot ... We'll announce we need people to step out of the area. ... The fact that a person is a reporter or has a credential, doesn’t give them additional rights to report a crime.

"To my knowledge, no one who was simply sitting passively was arrested that was in the general protest group," said Bostrom. He added that investigations are ongoing.

When asked if the police department anticipates ongoing criminal activity, he said, "less criminal activity today because there are less of them out there," but that they will still remain on guard. The department expects two major protests today, one of which it has some concerns about, because allegedly, some of the individuals participating have collaborated with yesterday's protesters. There is also a street dance today that is expected to be peaceful.

The department is able to hold "several thousand" in custody, and are not currently at capacity.

"Violent protestors", don't you mean the violent police who went after protestors AND the media like Amy Goodman from public broadcasting's "Democracy NOW!" Tell me just how the media was "obstructing justice" and "inciting violence" when they were covering the protestors who weren't even out in public protesting YET! Get your facts straight, this isn't a Banana Republic YET, you still have to have FACTS and not just assertions in your opinions and reports!

Republicans need a new direction. They need to lose and regroup.

What always strikes me about the childish temper tantrums of these overindulged 'protesters' is their utter lack of perspective and appreciation for the country they live in. Try being a citizen, not just a condescending feel good tourist, of a genuine developing country; one where even if voting exists, it is a fraud designed to keep a kleptocratic political class in power; where there are no private property rights and everything you own; everyone you love can disappear at the whim of someone whose paid the right person off. That is not this country and these poseurs; these unctuous dilettantes have absolutely no clue what a life like that is really all about.

bct424 - The protesters also know that the country is headed in the wrong direction and has an aministration that supports unconstitutional wars. To me these people are doing the right thing whether they be liberals, conservative republicans, vets of the Iraq war, or concerned citizens. If you think these people don't know what life is about perhaps they would say the same about you. As a matter of fact 70% of Americans are against the war which these protesters are standing against so you are in an ever-shrinking minority.

bct424 - I didn't see any signs proclaiming down with property rights. There are a few anarchist, and they should behave, but the overwhelming majority are there for a good reason.

grand hypocrisy from obama supporters yet again.....they rightfully accuse the republicans of hypocrisy when they pro-life against abortions, but pro-death for wars......yet these protesters are likely against the iraq war, but for violent protests? yet again, obama claims he is above the fray, but he is the common thread that connects the otherwise unconnected supporters....

chris
The protests have been pretty peaceful so far. Let's hope it stays that way. By the way I agree with your mention of republican hypocrisy.

At the DNC convention, there was an anti-war march, and other protestors. During the entire week less than 200 total people were arrested. There was no violence targeted against DNC convention goers. Contrast this with the violence that the Dem supporters are bringing to the RNC convention, with 300 people arrested on the first day alone. Violence against an 80-year old convention goer is clearly over the boundaries of decency and respect for other's opinions. The DNC candidates need to manage their supporters - it's clear he can't or perhaps he is egging them on. Is the DNC becoming a party of pagans and hate or what? There is no reasonable explanation for the violence and divisiveness of the Dems in this election.

jackie - I hope the protesters follow the rules. I would also tell you that many of those protesters are republicans and former republicans including Paul supporters and Iraqi vets. If violence occurs the anger is understandable, but violence is always counterproductive in these settings.

Oops I don't want to ban myself. Ben is the name. Countering stupidity is my game.

Protests represent the true voice of the people. People have to feel pretty passionate about a situation to mobilize and put their lives in jeopardy just so they can be heard. This should be a message to our Republican bretheren that a voluntary change in course and philosophy is needed. Should they not listen, and still retain power, these protests will turn into a true revolution and the change will be forced upon them. A turning point in history is upon us...

Hey, now, that's not Minnesota Nice! I can tell by your violent behavior that you're not from Minnesota--and certainly not from St. Paul. If you're not going to act like responsible members of this democracy by protesting peacefully, than Minnesotans don't want you here!

Uff Da! If you don't understand that, it just proves that you're not from these parts.

bct424 - "unctuous dilettantes" my how grandiose.
I've seen families left without children after their patriotism was called upon with lies. I've seen pictures of foreigners tortured to death in response to fabrications, pictures I still cringe at the thought of, justified for the profit of few. I've paid hard earned tax dollars for years only to see the funds directed to rich conglomerates who through their political funding and influences attempt constantly to disenfranchise the common voter from the electoral process.
Is that the kind of society you claim we haven't experienced?
Poseur?

Criminal traitors are in control of our Federal Government. It is therefore our Patriotic duty under the Constitution to protest. It's also not too late to hold these criminals accountable for their actions. This is your opportunity to participate in True Justice.

Wow, paint the picture of 1968 Demo convention protests and show us a KENT STATE moment and maybe, just maybe, these fine republicans can WIN!!!! The MAINSCREAM media marches on...

The arrest of distinguished journalist Amy Goodman and the two other members of her crew as well as the arrest of an news photographer was unwarranted and disgusting. This was Chicago in 1968 on a smaller scale. We saw police officers disgracing their uniforms and along with their superiors participated in the further shredding of the Constitution.

There is no excusing the small number of agitators that engaged in violence and made it difficult for both police and peaceful demonstrators. But there was no excuse for how the police behaved in response. Every citizen from the region should be ashamed of their police officers and protest vigorously at the callous and unnecesary violence that the police engaged in.

It also appears that the secret service or somebody unidentified used this excuse to further intimidate the press by ripping the credentials off of the necks of the reporters, perhaps to cover up for the police that they were openly arresting reporters.

Democracy is in very shaky shape in this country right now.

This is what 8 years of Bush and company has brought us...Tyranny!

Posted by: Ramage | Sep 2, 2008 8:36:50 PM

The "rioters" are police agents working for the Repugnicrits trying to justify their brutality and four more years!!! Hope it backfires on them!!!

Posted by: Antonio | Sep 3, 2008 1:21:35 AM

The journalist and two producers are well respected in their field and the journalist, Amy Goodman, is not a violent lady and is actually not as young as she use to be and the very fat that the police are censoring the independent media that isn't inside the spin convention is unpatriotic and makes me sick. Lets be frank here, the treatment and wild charges brought against many of the protesters who were arrested demonstrates the agenda set forth by the police departments in correlation with the RNC.
Lets not get hung up on the ugliness of the convention though, for the second time in American history a woman had been nominated for the Vice Presidency and wether it's a small step forward or a few steps forward it should be applauded if not than at the least acknowledged
