Stephanopoulos: Three Questions Republicans Are Asking Themselves About Palin
September 02, 2008 9:24 AM
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos reports: Republicans were rocked yesterday by new revelations about Gov. Sarah Palin, R-Alaska, and are increasingly worried about what else they may not know about Sen. John McCain's, R-Ariz., running mate.
Republican sources say three questions are being asked by delegates at the Republican Convention in St. Paul, Minn., and by party operatives around the country:
1) What else is out there about Palin? Monday brought the announcement that Palin's 17-year-old daughter is pregnant; news that Palin was once a member of the fringe Alaskan Independence Party; and the revelation that Palin's husband was arrested for a DUI in the 1980s. The news about Palin has continued to come this morning, with the Washington Post reporting that Palin hired a lobbying firm during her time as the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, to lobby for millions in earmarks for the small town.
2) Was the vetting process complete and professional? Reports in Tuesday's New York Times and Alaska Daily News both suggest the McCain campaign's vetting of Palin was swift and superficial, although the McCain campaign continues to insist that Palin was thoroughly and professionally vetted.
3) And most significantly, what message will voters hear about McCain's judgment that he chose someone to be his running mate who has almost no national security experience and who is so much of an unknown quantity?
As these questions continue to hang over Republicans, I'll be asking McCain's opponent for the presidency, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for his perspective on these issues in an exclusive interview airing Sunday on "This Week."

Palin's husband got a DUI 22 years ago? Fine. go tell us about Obama's drug use 22 years ago.
Posted by: geevill | Sep 2, 2008 9:34:07 AM
Just the tip of the iceberg. It speaks volumes to how McCain is so completely out of touch.
I'm not sure which scenario would be better for McCain: she was not vetted, or was - and still thought of as a good choice. Either way, not the best display of good judgment.
Posted by: Deep Release | Sep 2, 2008 9:43:16 AM
I can't help wondering if McCain has changed his mind about wanting to be President, but can't simply back out at this point. What better way to assure his loss than to select a running mate who is emminently unqualified to fill the job should something happen to him?

She will not survive the week as soon as the fringe group story hits the airways.
Posted by: jen | Sep 2, 2008 9:44:20 AM
Maybe Ann Coulter could give some sage advice on the issues?

I'm glad that I am not a devoted Republican. But the faithful will not allow facts to deter them from the ticket. We have friends, names withheld, who although they are worried about their son after three tours in Iraq still worry more about whether the candidates are pro life. Go figure. I have never understood why people who in theory are against government want to use it to cram their views down the throats of others. This Republican Party I no longer recognize.

McCain made a good choice for Obama. I almost feel like he is trying to lose this race. Like he knows how bad Washington is messed up and he really doesn't want any part of it.
Posted by: beck | Sep 2, 2008 9:47:10 AM
geevil, McSame has not vetted seriously Miss Alaska at all, he was impressed by her beauty, few of her remarks and age and made his decision. Now the problem is that slowly but certainly media will do its work and carry our its national responsibility. This greatest nation on earth will not be between the hands of Miss Alaska and the old McCain, because they are not capable of taking care of it. God save America from McPaulin. God bless America and God bless Obama.OBAMA/BIDEN08

Her daughter being pregnant or that Gov. Palin's 5th child is actually her grandchild are not so much of an issue. The issue is why did she lie? She also voluntarily told the American people that she told the Congress "Thanks, but no thanks" with regard the Bridge to Nowhere only to be discovered from the Editor & Publisher that she did make the construction of bridge to nowhere her previous campaign cry and that she received money for that project which she later abandoned so she could use that same money to finance other projects. If you cannot be trusted with little things, how can you be trusted with bigger things?
Posted by: susie | Sep 2, 2008 9:49:54 AM
I am not a right-winger but I do think that Mrs. Palin should consider staying home to take care of her baby and her pregnant daughter who is going to need her full support in the coming months. I also do not think it's fair for her to be putting her 17 year old daughter thru all this.
Posted by: pt | Sep 2, 2008 9:50:41 AM
Palin was obviously a poor choice.
She brings nothing to the ticket, has too many negatives and no real positives.
McCain only wanted her because she is a woman and was hoping Hillary suppporters would flock to him, and they are not.
It just shows how reckless and incompetent he really is... if he was a true maverick like he says he is, he would have gone with his first choice.
No way, No how to McCain/Palin
Posted by: lmg | Sep 2, 2008 9:51:37 AM
At least the McCain camp got a boost from Palin's new press secretary Maria Bartiromo who just happened to be interviewing her in Alaska last week. Was NBC setup? Sounds like Rove

Look, Cocaine addiction, Williams Ayers afffiliation, Rezko the felon-mortgage deal, Jeremiah Wright God Damned America, Sinclair the blow-job...Now, on the right-wing, the Palin's drama. This is exciting and this is truly cut-throat politics! Cannot stand the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen. Let's the game begins.

Blowhard Joe Biden says
"if Barack grew up in our neighborhood like he did in Kansas being raised by his grandparents"
Obama never lived in Kansas.

McCain is an idiot and this VP pick will go downa s the worst in history. What does it say about the man's judgement that he did not vet his VP pick? Even sales folks working at Walmart get vetted better than this clown, palin. Look at Rasmussen poll out this morning. McCain just handed the Presidency to Obama on a platter. What a loser.
Posted by: Kevin | Sep 2, 2008 9:58:04 AM
So much for John McCain's judgment! It's quite apparent that Sarah Palin's vetting was minimal at best. Are these the best people that the Republican Party can put forward to lead our country? It's definitely time for governmental change in the United States -- it's time for Obama/Biden! Howard Gallas, Reno, NV.

The only constitutional duty that the VP has is to step in should something happen to the president. It's even more important because McCain is 72, has had cancer etc. Palin does not meet that standard in any way, shape or form. Terrible pick. Plus she appears to be a drama queen, who is dominating the news day after day with negative stories. Stick a fork in McCain.
Posted by: hopesprings52 | Sep 2, 2008 10:02:15 AM
I am a conservative first, republican second.
As such, I am finding it harder and harder to support McCain. There were already troubles because of his "maverick" (which really means screw the GOP, I'm going liberal) tendencies such as McCain/Kennedy, McCain/Feingold, McCain/Lieberman. Note how those are very liberal Democrats he decides to team with.
But to find out that it was McCain's intention all along to further stick it to the party by picking Lieberman or Ridge is just another straw on the conservative's back. So he makes a rush choice of Palin and presented her as a conservative poster child to make folks like me happy. And now we see she is anything but that.
I will not vote for Obama because he is for all those things I listed that I am against. Plus, his tax policies (just as McCain's initial opposition to the Bush tax cuts that greatly helped my situtation- and I am the definition of middle middle-class) are wrong for the country.
It is McCain that blew it. That and his little pit bull Huckabee during the primaries taking the conservative vote from Romney.
I call on the delegates at the RNC (and I was a county and state delegate) to not approve Palin. Not because of these "scandals", but because we need to hold McCain's feet to the conservative fire or he will either lose in November or he will ruin the party for years to come.

McCain screwd up BIG time.
Posted by: Vanessa | Sep 2, 2008 10:03:01 AM
I'm shocked by McCain's choice. Is this the best VP candidate out there? I don't think so. So, why did he choose her? I've heard that McCain he did so because she is a reformer. That he sees her as a duplicate of himself. If his plan is to reform Congress, how does he intend to do that? Is it through a line item veto privilege? How does he intend to "change" the Republican and Democratic Congress? Perhaps if we could get some coverage about that instead of Palin's pregnant daughter.

It is about time that msm finally ask real, legitimate, non-superficial questions about McCain's campaign, after many, many gaffes, after many, many cover-ups, after many, many lies that were evident. John McCain does not have the executive judgment to be President.
When you review some of the qualifications of the President below, even a illiterate, blind and cross-eyed wilderbeast will know that in some of the major categories, JOHN MCCAIN lacks:
Desirable knowledge, skills, and abilities
The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in leadership, public service, management, international relations, and national security. He or she will also bring personal integrity, a strong sense of ethics, and the wisdom to exercise good judgment in times of uncertainty.
Leadership
The ideal candidate will have:
* A vision that inspires citizens and nations - and the ability to articulate that vision. Exceptional communication skills are required.
* The ability to attract and develop a strong team of advisors
* An aptitude for building coalitions and negotiating compromises, across parties and among nations
* The facility to assess complex situations, envision alternative outcomes, and make wise decisions
Public service
* A demonstrated commitment to public service, with clear dedication to the democratic ideals set forth in the constitution
* A deep understanding of government processes, preferably acquired through senior-level government experience
* Clear priorities and well-informed positions on national issues
Management
* Executive-level skills in strategic planning, team building, and budget management
* Experience leading a complex organisation that delivers large-scale programmes and services
* An in-depth understanding of economics; proficiency in constitutional law
More tools and resources for US voters and non-citizens alike:
US Electoral College - the office of the US National Archives and Records Administration contains material on election history, voting systems, guides for election officials and resources for teachers
Project Vote Smart - a non-partisan, non-profit US political research organisation; its 2008 presidential candidates section provides information on candidate backgrounds, issue positions, voting records, and campaign finances
ChooseYour Candidate - from the Washington Post, an interactive quiz that compares the individual's views on national issues with those of the top presidential candidates
Core Documents of US Democracy- from the US government printing office, an archive of texts of current and historical government documents, including the US constitution
PublicAgenda - a non-partisan, non-profit organisation that provides detailed issue guides to help citizens "know more about critical policy issues so they can make thoughtful, informed decisions"
The Savvy Voter- from the Public Broadcasting System (PBS), an election guide that includes information on how to dissect an ad, analyse a poll, evaluate a platform, assess a website, and view news critically.International relations
* An exceptional talent for diplomacy. The president must be able to foster relationships and influence positive outcomes in international affairs
* Expertise in foreign policy and knowledge of alternative approaches to governance
* A well-grounded view of America's role in an interdependent world
National security
* A full knowledge of the structure and capabilities of the US armed forces
* Direct experience of the reality of war and military power, often demonstrated through personal military service; and of the requirements and mechanics of intelligence as a means of protecting the country and its people
Personal qualities
Finally, the candidate must have the physical stamina, strength of character, and emotional resiliency to meet the demands of a high-pressure job that could affect the stability of the country, the balance of world power, and the quality of life of millions of people for generations to come.

McCain has just given up the experience argument. They look ridiculous saying that she defended our borders against Russia. Even taking away Obama's State Legislature and US Senate experience, he has shown that he has been able to run a tight ship in his Presidential race for a longer period of time than Pallin was Governor.
Posted by: awmahn | Sep 2, 2008 10:04:23 AM
Personal details are insignificant except they give a mirror into the subject. Obama honetly wrote about his past indiscretions - showing it's better to preemptive if you're not a Republican. This goes to McCain's Judgment - his motto is Country First - yet Palin belonged to a secession group; McCain's against earmarks yet Palin lobbied for them - but now claims she's against them -- more of the same -- yes. I don't care that her daughter is pregnant - but I do care she and McCain want to make that decision for other woman young and old. Interesting how Republicans lectures minorities on unwanted pregnancies and how they are bad parents -- yet the conservatives view the Palin situation as something to celebrate?

Someone need to review ABC's tape of the "Hookers N' Blow" party at the RNC. I swear that I can see Sarah Palin on stage in the background at approximately -1:02 in the video. But I guess that would be of no surprise to anyone, much less the republiCONS.

The double standard here is UNBELIEVEABLE... Edwards fathers a love child and nobody says anything and a 17 yr old girl is pregnant and soon to be married and it's the end of the world and John McCain? Not to mention Clinton/Cigars/Interns/Lies in the White House and "that's his business not ours" You Liberals are an IN-CREDIBLE group.Use your brain and TRY to think outside the liberal media box for once! WOW!
Posted by: Cher FL | Sep 2, 2008 10:07:43 AM
McCain has also just given up the "Country First" argument. They look ridiculous saying that she is the best choice for the country. No one in their right mind thinks that Pallin was picked as the most qualified person to run the country. She was picked because she was in lock step with the religious right, and she is a woman. I hate Lieberman and Ridge, but even I would not make the claim that picking them would be picking someone that was unqualified.
What argument is he left with?
POW POW POW POW. Does he really think that we will elect someone because of something heroic that happened 40 years ago? I pray not.
Posted by: awmahn | Sep 2, 2008 10:08:07 AM
Even as an Obama supporter, the news that Palin's husband got a DUI a million years ago is pointless and shouldnt make any headlines at all. Its a non-issue, even moreso with all the other material we are reading.
I am stunned however, that McCain supporters cant just say "wow what is he doing". If Obama picked a Palin-equivilent, I would be pissed and qould question him big time.
Posted by: Corey | Sep 2, 2008 10:08:18 AM
The news media are saying that Biden will have to be soft on her or we would see him as picking on a woman... I am a woman, I think he needs to be Biden and let them debate... If she can't take the heat then she needs to get out of the kitchen...
Posted by: beck | Sep 2, 2008 10:08:26 AM
If McCain's camp did not not do a thorough vetting of Palin shame on them. If McCain's camp did do a thorough vetting of Palin and still moved forward with this abysmal pick, also shame on them. I don't know which position is worse.

That's because Palin is a great pick. her record is outstanding. She fought corruption where Obama bathed in it. Palin is not anti-American like Obama and his associates.

Well there we go again. Those on their high and mighty horses, as recently as yesterday, saying that teen pregnancy is a social disease brought on by a myriad of issues that the democrats don’t just seem to see as a problem. Now look at what they are saying: Governor Palin’s family is like any other family and should be supported. Hello, one day you are saying that the right way to support a family is to be there with your children, support abstinence education, and act the “Christian Way”. The next day, OH! it’s OK to have a 14 year old date a 23 year old, a 17 year can get pregnant, a 16 year old who can get birth control (with her mother at her side?), a mother that can return to work within 3 days of giving birth to a beautiful, but challenged child, and a husband that can continue to be, pretty much, a unengaged, not too interested or non-supportive fatherLet’s look at the Republicans, while it is OK to be critical, don’t throw stones when you yourselves live in glass houses. Let;s name a few folks over the last year or so with some problems, and then the Republicans, can sit back and allow at least 30 Democrats the right to misbehave, without recourse:Vitter, Craig, Stevens, 2 sex perverts and 1 crook to name a few. If you want to stand the higher moral ground, then clean your own closets first. And yes Larry Craig is still in there, or so he believes!Palin is as unqualified as any one could be. Children that have no moral guidance (or if they did, they had lousy teachers, another reason she is a bad pick), a working mother that cares only for her job (3 days after giving birth she is back at work), a disengaged husband, a supporter of “Pork” (just ask the town of Wasilla how much return they got for the lobbiest they paid for - It was millions, not to mention her support for the “Bridge to Nowhere”, which she stilll supports but in a less expensive mode. Flip flopper, she is, as she has changed her position on several things as she has risen to the rank of Governor of a pretty backward state. What is McCain thinking, 3 electoral votes? Women’s votes? Yeah his senility is showing, Mike Huckabee or Mitt Romney would have been much better picks and they bring along many more states. The candidate for the Republicans has made a poor choice, and I for one, will not vote for a small town/time local politician who has never had a national leadership job, probably can not spell Darfur or Chechnya, let alone even been oversaes vacationing, where she shops at the local dock to pick up dinner off the boat. What in the world does Palin know about biofuels and the impact on food availability, the financial markets and where they are located, let alone how they are run and what impact there is on just the tiniest things happening, etc. Prove to me that she has a global knowledge and can show us where Tbilisi is located and what concern Russia has there, then I might think to vote for the Republicans. NO I THINK NOT. Someone needs to be gentle and tell her to go home for the good of the country.

But after 172 days in the senate Obama is totally ready to lead as president?? 1 1/2 yrs as Governor is too inexperienced to be VICE President?? I don't see why this is even an issue??
Posted by: Brian | Sep 2, 2008 10:12:43 AM
3 Big Red Flags even before you even look at her ideology and her lack of experience on national and international issues.
1.) Palin is under investigation for what amounts to an abuse of power, i.e. using her political office to conduct a personal vendetta. She was caught lying about her office's involvement.
2.) Palin lied in her introduction to the country about her opposition to earmarks and particularly the "bridge to nowhere."
3.) Palin was a member of a fringe political party that thinks Alaska should secede from the United States and whose founders don't consider themselves Americans.
All this brings into relief McCain's poor judgment. Palin was definitely not a "country first" choice.
Posted by: Ed | Sep 2, 2008 10:13:00 AM
McCain shows incompetence and poor judgment on his choice of VP. Palin is just as corrupt as the good old boys in Washington. No change there. I think the issue of her daughter's pregnancy is serious. Why didn't she talk to her child about this issue. I guess she was too busy with other issues as building a multi-million dollar bridge to nowhere land than to take care of her own family.
Posted by: Angie | Sep 2, 2008 10:13:13 AM
Why is it only Obhama supporters have a problem with Palin? If she was such a bad pick why the fear in your posts?
Posted by: geevill | Sep 2, 2008 10:13:27 AM
So Todd had a DUI 20 years ago. That is not a problem, the problem is he has used the Governors office as if it was his. See the Toopergate and he used it to fire another who was dating an ex wife of a friend of his.

the real vetting process we should be concerned about is Dem Choice for President 08 Hussien Obama-- we are not even sure whether he qualifies to run for the President. Is a natural US Citizen?? As a kid he had Indonesian citizenship. His ties to the CHicago underworld and anti American preachers.

After McCain picked Palin, i sent a text to my brother saying: HERE WE GO! This was a clsoe race that i predicted would be decided when one party made a big mistake. When he picked Palin, McCain didn't just make a big mistake, he made a devastatingly stupid mistake. A grave mistake. He might survive this. But he'll need Palin to be as skilled as Obama to have a shot. Now we'll see what she is made of. People think what Obama has done was easy. It's not. For a greenhorn to face the press and all their questions aday after day and not be a gaffe machine is very difficult. Palin will now be put to the test. let's see how she responds.

Pallin's husband's DUI 22 years ago is not important. John McCain's judgment now is. It appears he made this decision with little thought, inadequate homework, and not according to the hight standards he himself set. What good is all that experience if it is in the hands of an irrational person? It is becoming more and more apparent that John McCain is the risky choice in this election.

These so called evangelicals who are really political cronies hiding behind the cloth love the Republican Party more than they love God. They don't have any family values. But we all know if that were Michelle Obama's or Hillary Clinton's pregnant teenage daughter Tony Perkins and others would be pointing a finger at them and saying what a poor example they are setting. They would be raking these mothers across the hotest of coals.
As a born again, bible-toting Christian, I'm offended by these hypocrites

Mostly what bothers me is Palin's membership in the anti-American (and downright treasonous) Alaska Independence Party.
GOAL
Until we as Alaskans receive our Ultimate Goal, the AIP will continue to strive to make Alaska a better place to live with less government interference in our everyday lives.
The Alaskan Independence Party’s goal is the vote we were entitled to in 1958, one choice from among the following four alternatives:
1) Remain a Territory.
2) Become a separate and Independent Nation.
3) Accept Commonwealth status.
4) Become a State.

While I am not crazy about the idea of Palin belonging to a separatist party.....it was a way for her to express her opinion(remeber freedom of speech i think it's in that document located at the archives building in dc)...possibly she feels alaska gives more than it gets....possibly she was tired of panty waste liberals telling her they could drill ANWR.....she's got more balls than Barak and Biden put together.....

The penultimate question is:
"Would Sarah Palin shoot a pregnant moose, gut it and grind the fetus meat into hamburger, grill and eat it?"
That will be the defining question for her to answer.
"Sarah pales in comparison" will be the headline following her debate with Joe Biden.
Sheesh!

It's hilarious reading these posts trying to defend Palin as a "good" choice. There's no defense...only people trying to redirect the converstion.
She was picked based on gender. That's it! Obviously it was a transparent attempt to try and get Hillary supporters. Certainly it wasn't because of experience, history, or ability.
And Palin's misuse of her power to try and get someone fired because he divorsed her sister...sounds like a repeat of the Bush Administration firing people who disagreed with them. Are lying and the abuse of power the staple Republican ideologies now?
I pick McCain as the Democratic MVP! No way this guy should be President. He's making it easy. The GOP is glad they had hurricane to delay the convention. It bought some time and are scambling to spin all the negative stories.
Geevil, we know about Obama. We know nothing about Palin - and what we do know is all bad. McLame has once again proven he (Mr bottom 1% of his class) has no business trying to govern the most complex nation in the world. He may have been a POW (which he's milked for 30 years), but he's no leader.

How can we trust Palin who was part of a group whose motto is "Alaska First, Alaska First" and who has a policy talking about how they should infiltrate national parties in order to achieve their goal of seceding from the United States?

Liz there is no other way for me to say this, you are a simple stupid bitch, and it's comments like that and people like you that will cost the Democratic Ticket this November. Keep it up people the world is watching.

The denial of the Republicans is comical. This was the worst VP pick possible. What is true about Palin does not matter. This is about the lack of Judgment by shoot from the hip playboy "country club kid" McCain. If this is the best reformer the Republicans have, sad!

what does palin's daughter have to do with her politics? There is no way that mccain didnt know her daughter was pregnant. Are you serious? All you have to do is look at her. also, even if he didnt know, dont you think palin told him? do you really think mccain and palin were not on the same page about this?

It's too bad that now the conservatives have someone to rally support for, the liberal press and Dem's have to come up with as much "dirt" as they can. Even though its not relevant or truthful. You know that now your in trouble, and can't deal with it. What would be better, a president - Obama, or vice president - Palin with limited experience?

geevill,
You're an order of magnitude more afraid of Obama
Damn right. Every true American is terrified of that lowlife getting anywhere near the Whitehouse

Democrats have to prove they're "patriotic"- because they are Democrats who want to change they way our faltering government operates.
Republicans claim it's obvious they love America because they say word "patriotism" and "freedom" in all their speeches. They may think they love America, but they hate 50% of the people living here.
No thanks! We'll take the change!

As a proud independent voter single-issue candidates do not move me. The sooner these political parties learn this the better.
This choice appears to be based on a pro-life candidate who is young. I do not care if you are 70 or 40, but your choice for VP of the United States Of America should bring more than political base enthusiasm to your ticket.
I find it hard to accept that there was no better choice in the Republican Party than Governor Palin. What does this say about the Republican Party these days?
At this moment it going to take a miracle to move me to vote for their ticket. In 2000 I change registrations for a day just to vote for McCain, but sadly eight years later I no longer see him as the voice for change.

Hold on a second - aren't DEMOCRATS always saying that their the party of people who understand teen pregnancy, drug use, free-will, people shouldn't be overly scrutinized when they make a poor life decision blah, blah...yet when it's a Republican who faces the same issue, all of sudden the DEMS find some kind of moral pulpit to bully from - to all DEMS - you can't have both sides...oh wait, yes you can, and always have.

John L, I prefer the guy who taught constitutional law for 10 years and managed to properly vet his running mate.
Since the President appoints 6,000 people to office, I'd like them to be smart, hard working and not anti-American secessionists. Thanks.

bill,
It is unbelievable to me that McCain, a man with so much experience showed such a lack of judgement in selecting Palin. It is obvious she was not vetted properly. It is obvious she has foreign policy experience. She supposedly is known a crusader. While, I don't think she has the track to determine that I will grant her that title...So, now what? What policies will this crusader help promote? More drilling offshore and Alaska? Turning back Roe vs. Wade? Continued support for the Iraq war with no end in sight?
What are her positions on anything....And, oh by the way....How do staunch conversatives reconcile the fact that this woman is travelling the country campaigning while have a special needs infant at home under the care of others? Isn't this what conservatives have railing about these last several years? That woman need to stay home with their children in order for those children to properly raised. I remember the outcry again the Edwardses for bringing their children on the campaign with them. But of course conservative hypocrisy knows no bounds..

and the murders and Lansky mafia connection to the budweiser empire..now we knoiw from what Jewish group McCain gets his support.

Simple as this - we're voting for Obama in my house now. Sarah Palin is as far from commander in chief and any woman could possibly be. I AM more qualified! I was a Hillary supporter who was going to vote for McCain. No more. John McCain and his poor judgment saw to that.

I hope this shows once and for all that women do not belong in the White House or as VP.
Enough is enough. Men from now on.

@Geevill, the irony is lost on people like you who just don't get it.
Thanks for the comedy releif this morning.

tell us about sex starved Bill Clinton. I think this was a great choice for McCain. She will do great things.

HA- the MSM is mad because MAC's VEEP Pick stole the news spotlight from their messsianic hero worship thursday night...they wanted the buzz to last longer...if nothing else the Palin pick froze them out...as if John Edwards had any more experience than she did when he ran the first time fo
