The Note: McCain Gamble Leaves Bailout, Debate in Limbo
September 26, 2008 9:11 AM
ABC News' Rick Klein reports in Friday's Note:
OXFORD, Miss. -- Sen. John McCain may or may not have broken the bailout bill -- and surely he didn’t do so all by himself.
But he owns it now.
In the battle over perceptions, it really is this simple: There was a deal before McCain came back to Washington. There was not a deal by the time the evening ended. And now there might not be a bill -- or a first presidential debate Friday in Mississippi.
Holding that very heavy bag are McCain and his GOP colleagues in Congress. Steve Schmidt gets his wish: McCain is in the middle of the action -- amid friendly fire, political gamesmanship, competing loyalties, reelection fights, and a White House with no juice left.
(And, oddly, the whole distraction has an upside for Team McCain: We’re not talking about Gov. Sarah Palin, whose slow media rollout is maybe not going slow enough.)

“Democrats immediately blamed McCain for disrupting the effort at compromise, saying his decision to suspend his campaign and return to Washington shifted the klieg lights of the White House contest to the tense and delicate congressional negotiations,” Michael D. Shear and Jonathan Weisman write in The Washington Post.
Oh yes, the debate.
We know that at least half of this strange non-team that saw the bailout bill go from done deal to just plain done Thursday at the White House will be making the trip to Ole Miss.
Sen. Barack Obama’s A team is already in Oxford, Miss., for a debate that would be fraught with symbolism and historical significance even if its very existence wasn’t still in doubt.
“Come hell or high water, we’re going to Oxford,” an Obama press aide said late Thursday, per ABC’s Sunlen Miller.

Dems and Repubs. come out to announce the plan was been substantially revised and is now finalized. The McCain comes to town, meets with the House Republicans and heads to the White House. And lo and behold, the deal is busted apart and chaos reigns. People can see why McCain suspended his campaign and the debate --he had to get to D.C. to blow the deal apart!!!! Dems are holding their noses to vote for this stinker caused by Bush and the GOP f'ing up to save the economy and McCain (through his House surrogates) is torpedoeing it. Meanwhile WaMu has the largest bank failure in U.S. history. It's 100 % pure politics by "maverick" John McCain. Country first -- I think not!

Barack Obama continues to display the leadership and temperament required to be the next president of the United States.
This may seem cynicle, but I can't help but wonder if John McCain didn't stage the House Republican revolt on Thursday, only to plan to "rescue" the country hours before the scheduled debate on Friday night. He would then attend the debate and proclaim to be the hero that saved America from financial doom.
Both parties were close to an agreement before John McCain arrived in Washington DC and had a private meeting with the House Republicans.
Time will tell....

McCain is just a joke, he is not up to the task and is hiding behind his lack of skills, inabilities and lack of knowledge. That is unfortunate. McCain has no judgement, he is not a leader and will not succeed because God loves America.

Hey, what is important here to hear Obama and McCain talk about issues that might NEVER happen if the economic crisis continues. Obama is a "fruit cake". Obama should stay and help--- he is a Senator still paid to do this job, if not willing to do it for Illinois, how about willing to do it for the country.
Obama said it is critical but he is acting like it is not...only having his prepared debate is now important.

Rhonda - Very interesting idea. I will bet McCain will show up after a miriclious ending to the meetings in which all will be settled and he will attempt to take all the credit. I am very disappointed in MCCain, he was at one time a man of integrity now I am not so sure. The Straight Talk Express has had a major derailment.

The paid Republican bloggers spewing their partison rhetoric are ruining these blogs for those of us who would like intelligent discourse. I encourage everyone to look at the various blogs and see that Kitty, Belle Starr, John, etc. blog over and over and over in disdainful ways. These people are highly partison, repeat untruths, and generally will do anything for McCain. Most of us regular people are just trying to work through the issues and be good patriots. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Yes, it is so funny how McCain rode into Washington when there was an agreement on hand and now its all disrupted because of the politics he injected into it....why? Because he's a coward and didnt want to face Obama (and not to mention his wish to postpone/delay/cancel the Palin debate). The news also reported last night that while Obama was asking some very tough, specific answers during the White House meeting, McCain remained "mostly silent." So where's this maverick McCain who held the financial solutions in his hands (AND he didnt suspend his negative ads during this process either, oh just another lie). I want this election to be over and McCain/Palin to be thrown into their respective ditches. We're tired of THESE two who say they have answers, experience, the will to lead, blah blah blah....but instead they offer us silence, lies, confusion, frustration, anger, and embarrasment (you almost feel sorry for Palin's ignorance on questions she has BEEN ASKED BEFORE!!! And Laura Bush said she was a "quick learner" well....sorry Laura, we're not taking YOUR word for it).

I see by the obvious link to Obama's website, as well as the slant of the information posted here, that ABC wants a certain man to be president, regardless of what is really true.

I’m only getting bits and pieces of the bailout plan, like all of you, but it looks like the Dems are trying to stick in the usual spending plans to “spur” the economy. I wanted the plan to help out regular people, but that kind of spending is just the usual way Dems say they “help” people to get votes.
I’m glad the Republicans are sniffing out ACORN voter fraud. They better get on that. I wonder if they can sue/take to court ACORN if they link fake registration cards to members of their organization. They should be really aggressive with that. Those fake registration cards keep popping up and it seems like they are mostly being linked to ACORN.
Acorn has been added to the bailout, a "earmark" from the DEMS....shame on them!!

Hey I am not a paid blogger how do I get that job???Wow McCain is giving out jobs like that.I will surely vote for him now!

The fact that Barack Obama has the most liberal, left wing voting record in the Senate proves he is not a discerning politician. He's not a democrat that thinks and weighs, he just votes "yes" when the issue is liberal. He's not a democrat like the others, he's a socialist.

house republicans stalled, and perhaps this is a big part of why.

Ann - since Obama (nor McCain for that matter) sit on any committees pertinant to the crisis, just what are they supposed to do? They are to sit in on and participate in the negotiations which they have done. They are supposed to vote on the bill when the time comes. They sat in yesterday, they can fly back from Mississippi in what a couple of hours. The debate must go on. We need to hear what these guys have to say about the economy as well as their foreign policy.

I previously had tremendous respect for John McCain and was considering voting for him. What a disappointment and embarrassment he has turned out to be. Sarah Palin, his most important decision, would jeopardize this country in ways we could only begin to imagine with her lack of qualifications. The McCain has assumed the Rovian standard operating procedures, and have told so many lies, the American people just expect that what comes out of the campaign to be lies! McCain did not suspend his campaign, nor has he even thought of putting country first. He is playing partisan politics with the economic future of this country. This is unforgivable.

McCain went there and fixed the problem...
