The Note: New Questions Dog McCain-Palin Ticket

Share

September 02, 2008 9:16 AM

ABC News' Rick Klein reports in Tuesday's Note:

ST. PAUL, Minn. --

What did John McCain know, and when did he know it?

We will get a full Republican National Convention back, starting Tuesday. (Sen. Joe Lieberman and former Sen. Fred Thompson help get us from telethon to television -- and President Bush will get his address via satellite, for better and worse, while Rudy Giuliani gets bumped to another night.)

But even if we didn’t get back on track, just think of what we’ve been through together already. A storm blew through St. Paul, Monday -- and there was a hurricane you may have heard about, too.

And behind the news about Gov. Sarah Palin’s daughter (biology as pushback?) is a pregnant series of questions about Sen. John McCain: Did he know, really and fully, what he was getting into? Does his campaign regret the choice, even a little bit? What does all of this say about his judgment?

(How many more stories before Palin = “Northern Exposure,” and how long a trip is it from there to Tom Eagleton/Harriet Miers territory?)

Read the rest of The Note -- and get all the latest on the 2008 election, Congress, the White House and the wide world of politics every day -- from Rick Klein by bookmarking this link.

(And while we’re waiting for those answers -- Sen. Barack Obama will be George Stephanopoulos’ exclusive headliner Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”)

It was a good political day to dump Palin information, as Gustav wasn’t quite dumping its wrath on the Gulf Coast. But this starts to add up:

“Among other less attention-grabbing news of the day: it was learned that Ms. Palin now has a private lawyer in a legislative ethics investigation in Alaska into whether she abused her power in dismissing the state’s public safety commissioner; that she was a member for two years, in the 1990s, of the Alaska Independence Party, which has, at times, sought a vote on whether the state should secede; and that Mr. Palin was arrested 22 years ago on a drunken driving charge,” Elisabeth Bumiller writes in The New York Times.

“We are going to flush the toilet,” new McCain-Palin aide Tucker Eskew (yes, THE Tucker Eskew) tells the Times.

Things Team McCain may have wanted done, say, last week: “Aides to Mr. McCain said they had a team on the ground in Alaska now to look more thoroughly into Ms. Palin’s background,” Bumiller reports. “A Republican with ties to the campaign said the team assigned to vet Ms. Palin in Alaska had not arrived there until Thursday, a day before Mr. McCain stunned the political world with his vice presidential choice.”

If Chelsey Clinton became pregnant as a teen in the white house what then would the my fellow republicans & the media be saying about it?

Posted by: food for thought | Sep 2, 2008 9:59:54 AM

argh! "It's so nice to see Democrats attack women vociferously."

Really? This is an attack on all women, by all Democrats? Perhaps you should consider looking at REALITY for a moment:

In the House there are 74 female Representatives. The Senate has 16 females.

Of the 16 female Senators, 11 are Democrats and 5 are Republicans. Of the 74 female Representatives, 53 are Democrats and 21 are Republicans.

Yet Democrats are padlocking the glass ceiling? Please. jhw

Why can't Republican's push what's good about their candidate rather than fling mud at the opposition? Isn't there ANYTHING good about their ticket to talk about (other than being a POW in the last century)?

This has moved past inappropriate to sad. The media has focused all efforts now on discussing -

- How inappropriate it is to discuss the pregnancy and candidates' families.
- How chivalrous Obama was in declaring families out of bounds.
- How McCain must not have known about this.

Could this possibly be more front-and-center now, after all these "efforts" to not dwell on it.

Let's talk about how it takes a family support network in times like this. And if the Palin family can accomplish that in the throes of the campaign, hats off to them. Distracting them and the public by making their teen pregnancy a national issue is nothing more than politics as usual. Sad indeed.

Palin opposes sex-ed, is anti-gay, anti-environment, anti-choice. She exaggerates her accomplishments, but really has zero experience in anything national or international. Got her passport last year. Like George Bush. McSame and now female Bush. Nice pair.

"Obama and the MSM will regret messing with Maverick and the Barracuda. The backlash by American voters will be fierce"

Incredible. Maybe McCain IS right - enough Americans have finally been dumbed down for this kind of thing to actually work.
His poor choice has reduced our national debate from issues like war, the economy and corruption in government and on Wall Street to "unwed teenage mothers need love."
Cry for our beloved country.

Questions? These questions are small change to the real questions facing the Bamma Obiden ticket.

How are they going to explain Joe's hairplugs? Explain Joe's son as a lobbyist.

Palin will take these "women" questions all day long.

What liberals cannot question is her totally successful rule as Alaska's governor.

John McCain should be running a bait shop instead of running for president. If he thought that just baiting all the women that voted for Hillary with just any woman would get him all the Hillary supporters votes he is sadly mistaken. I feel this is the ultimate insult to the judgement of the women voters. What next if John McCain becomes president, he is certain to take away a woman's right to choose, he may even try to take a woman's right to vote, far fetched, look at how Bush has trampled on our civil liberties. Believe me Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton and John McCain will be a disaster if he becomes president of this country!!

"This is pure Alexrod/Obama. they did the same thing to Clinton. Not everyone has forgotten that."

LOL. Axelrod and Obama went up to Alaska and forced poor Sarah Palin to mismanage funds in Wasilla, take hundreds of millions of dollars in pork-barrel spending from Washington DC, marry a drunk driver, unethically fire a public safety officer, join a pro-secessionist political party and call her political rival the b-word? Wow, if Axelrod/Obama have that kind of power, I want them in the White House. They make things happen!!!

In all seriousness, THIS is misogyny - refusing to judge a woman by the same standards you would judge a man. Sarah Palin is barely fit to be dog catcher, and that would be true if her name were Stanley Palin.

It is amazing the scrutiny that people put on a female candidate all in the name of vetting or some other excuse.

Get a life. Give the Palin's some privacy. Her daughter is not running for VP. Sarah Palin is not your typical person, preaching morality and doing something else. To me this woman epitomizes "living by the principles she beilieves in"

In the name of disclosure, let me state that I am male and a life long democrat - except this election cycle, I will be voting for the team that has put:

Country BEFORE Me !!
Responsibility BEFORE Privilege !!!
Shown the gumption to take on entrenched forces within their own party.

McCain / Palin in November
Registered Democrat for McCain / Palin :)

I love the people on this blog who immediate start trashing Obama. Hey, your guy is the one who did not do his homework. What good is his experience if didn't learn anything. If George McGovern and Walter Mondale taught anything it was the cost of poor vp candidate vetting.

Republican woman, stay away from me. Republican woman, mama let me be. Don’t come hangin’ around my door. I don’t wanna see your face no more. I got more important things to do. Than spend my time growin’ old with you. I don’t need your war machines. I don’t need your beauty queens. Northern lights can hypnotize. Sparkle someone else’s eyes. Goodbye, Republican woman. Goodbye, Republican chick. Goodbye, Republican broad ... (Adapted from The Guess Who's American Woman)

Did some one say Bristol Palin is 17 years old? How old is the boyfriend of her love child? Does he have a US Passport?
Alaska statutory rape laws declare that anyone who is 18 years old or older who has sex with a person who is 16 or 17, or who is at least three years younger than the offender, can be charged with sexual abuse in the third degree. This is also a felony.

Alaska statutory rape laws carry punishments that include imprisonment and fines.

Under Alaska law, health-care practitioners like doctors and nurses, plus teachers, counselors and a whole list of other professionals must report sex between a minor and an adult if it comes to their attention. To fail to do so is a misdemeanor.

why are they hiding Palen. Every candidate is rightly scrutinized by interviews. we want more answers directly from our candidate

Posted by: need to know | Sep 2, 2008 10:09:27 AM

Palin belonged to AIP for 2 years in the 90s. Obama belonged to Trinity Church for 20 years till this year.

Guilt by association?

From Wikipedia:

The Alaskan Independence Party is a political party in the U.S. state of Alaska. Its best-known policy is its call for a United Nations vote, which they claim should have been offered as an option in the plebiscite on statehood under international law. Ideologically a constitutional foundation, the party also calls for increased Alaskan control of Alaskan land, gun rights, privatization, home schooling, and reduction of governmental intrusion in the private lives of its citizens with adherence to the founding documents of the United States. The party has appeared on the ballot in Alaska in all state elections since 1970.

At other times, party members have also proposed that the state explore the possibility of joining Canada. Other members have expressed opposition to joining Canada in its present form but are open to the possibility of joining an independent Western Canadian state in the event one should be established. Neither of these scenarios form part of the party's current platform.

At the national level, the party is affiliated with the conservative Constitution Party.[2]

Chelsea Clinton was off limits to reporters, but they immediately began attacking Palin's young daughter. John Edwards had an affair, but that was off limits too. But let a Republican be the target and reporters begin throwing mud.

the change yobamma is talking about is the spare change in your pockets...taxes, welfare, national health care, fee abortions to high schoolers, on and on and on...
Now they attack a women VP because of family issues, just because they were too stupid to put Hillary on the ticket.... yeah they want change all the change you got....

susie: "by TRYING to prevent an investigation into his relationship with Ayers and the Anneburg Challange."

So (you claim) Obama "tried" to quash an investigation into an education promotion effort he was on the board of. So the investigation occurred - what were the results? What are the FACTS that were turned up? Or are they exactly as uninteresting as Obama originally stated (he served on the board and one of the members was a widely respected Chicago professor of education who was a casual acquaintance)? Quit flinging mud and try to bring a fact or two to the table. Even better, perhaps a reason why we SHOULD vote for McCain/Palin rather than a completely unverified rumor slandering the Obama/Biden ticket.

While I am not crazy about the idea of Palin belonging to a separatist party.....it was a way for her to express her opinion(remeber freedom of speech i think it's in that document located at the archives building in dc)...possibly she feels alaska gives more than it gets....possibly she was tired of panty waste liberals telling her they could drill ANWR.....she's got more balls than Barak and Biden put together.....

Posted by: dave | Sep 2, 2008 10:13:01 AM

Obama isn't "trying to get Palin fired." She's the best gift the Republicans could have given to the Democrats. This is the most inept VP choice any party has ever made. Even Dan Quayle is beginning to look positively statesman-like in light of Mrs. Palin. Thank you, Senator McCain.

The news media are saying that Biden will have to be soft on her or we would see him as picking on a woman... I say "IF YOU CAN'T TAKE THE HEAT GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN......Lets see what is she made of Biden.
