Women Against Sarah Palin Speak Out

September 11, 2008 6:12 PM

ABC News' Julia Hoppock reports: With recent polls suggesting that women are flocking to the McCain/Palin ticket, there is a growing chorus of female voices who want to put a stop to this trend, and fast.

Two women in New York felt so strongly that Palin was the wrong choice they created a blog called "Women Against Sarah Palin" and are using the site to post emails from women who write in from all over the country about why they think Palin is the wrong choice for Vice President and the wrong choice for American women.

"We felt as though McCain's choice was this kind of way to automatically grab female voters and we found that assumption was very insulting to our intelligence as female voters in America," said Lyra Kilston, a 31 year old art magazine editor in New York who helped create the blog.

Shortly after Palin's selection, Kilston and her co-worker Quinn Latimer, citing what they saw as 'mounting disbelief, fury and dread' among their female friends over the selection of Sarah Palin, sent out an email to forty of their friends soliciting reaction the Alaska Governor's nomination for their blog.  The women also asked the recipients to forward the email to everyone they knew so that others could do the same.

Within a week they received up to 80,000 responses from women from Alaska to Florida, and now estimate they are receiving response emails at a rate of three per second.

"I don't think either of us thought it would get this large or it would reach this many people," said Latimer.

While Kilston's and Latimer's blog has gained a lot of traction, polls reflect that Palin is viewed favorably by those in her peer group. A recent ABC News Washington Post poll found that 67 percent of white women viewed Palin favorably.

The two women take issue with Palin's stance on abortion rights, (she is anti-abortion rights) her views on climate change, (Palin has said she does not believe that global warming is man made) and what they perceive as a lack of experience.

"Palin's political views are in every way a slap in the face to the accomplishments that our mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers have fiercely fought for," they wrote in their email.

While the women strongly believe that Palin is not qualified to be vice president, they also don't want their blog to be a smear website.  They hope voters, the media, and contributors to their website focus on Sarah Palin's record rather than her biography. Latimer thinks that the election discourse has taken an ugly turn since Palin's selection.

"I think it has changed the election from something that was rigorous and intellectual and demanding on the people who were following it, said Latimer.  "McCain has changed that by bringing [Palin] on board.  Suddenly its 'Us Weekly. Suddenly its 'People Magazine' as opposed to a serious election on serious issues."

I sent my message to "women Against Sarah Palin" earlier today. What's interesting is that there are so many different reasons that some women are against her. My reason is that as a person with a degree in US History I am appalled that Palin seems to have absolutely no understanding, regard, or respect for the Constitution. Same as Bush and Cheney and that terrifies me.

The candidacy of McCaine and Palin poses a very serious threat to the safety and freedoms we enjoy here in the US- They are both able to hold their own beliefs but not to thrust them on the rest of us. McCain is a man who at the tax payers expense went to the US Naval Academy and basically wasted four years graduating fifth from the bottom of his class.

His war service in Vietnam is admirable but many others served and were imprisoned and they have not used it to achieve fame or fortune.

His rhetoric about Russia and Georgia smacks of George W Bush- a president who has bankrupted this country and criminally neglected the national problems .

Sarah Palin is bottom line-not suited to be the VP or the President of the United States. I applaud her service to her state and she may raise her family and conduct her self as she wishes . That is because she is an American. She seems to think that everyone else needs to believe the same thing and current news shows that she has not accomplished all that she has claimed- I am 68 years old and I have never been more frightened about the future of this country. We need someone very smart as president, someone who understands the whole concept, and have great analytical thinking. Remember one thing only, intelligence and vision doesn't have race and gender. Analyze all the data and get a judgement for yourself, for your future, your jobs, life, and kids. Don't take the luxury to vote for meaningless reasons. Unless the last 8 years were so darn good to you, which most Americans don't think.

The feminist movement should not exclude those women who are pro-life. It's absurd to think that holding such a belief as the fetus has rights at conception is contrary to the feminist movement.

Feminist movements should focus on universally accepted things like: no discrimination based on gender, equal rights, etc.

This is just a liberal women's way to enter politics, under the garb of feminism. It's despicable and sets back the feminist cause.

Maybe if you stopped conflating politics and feminism you would have seen hillary as pres.

As a devout Christian voter tired of the extreme Christian right pretending to speak for me, I am extremely disturbed by McCain/Palin (or should I say McCain/Ann Coulter). The extremely conservative views of Ms. Palin will not serve our country well (including teaching religion in public schools via intelligent design for God's sake?! C'mon who's going to teach what the curriculum, Rev. Phelps?!). Also, the fact that the extreme right is ecstatic at Palin suggests to me that the economy is going to be put on the back seat in favor or the latest social issue that social conservatives believe in.

It is time to heal this world, to help those in need, and narrow the gap between rich and poor. It is time to wake up and accept that we need to work together once and for all. While I do not think abortion is right, I also do not think that that is the worst problem plaguing our country. I think helping the poor (instead of more tax breaks for the rich), not risking the retirement of our seniors by privatizing social security, helping the environment, and ensuring we have insurance for all is extremely important. This is the true embodiment of Christian love.

God forbid something happens to McCain and she's our president?! She's so polarizing! I think Ms. Palin’s views on intelligent design, praying the gay away, funding of private Christian schools over public schools, and the like to see how she is very similar to Ann Coulter ideologically. McCain clearly showed poor decision-making in picking her--being pressured by the extreme right-wing. What we end up with is worse than even Bush/Cheney--we end up with a McCain/Coulter!

Its about time reality sinks in!! I am an older white woman and until recently Republican.... I could never support a woman whose adult "experience" is limited to a couple years of small town politics and several years on the PTA and local church board. We are talking about someone being the leader of the free world! The crash course they are giving her right now may fool too many people into thinking she actually has knowledge, interest and true opinions of the world and national affairs. I am terrified she will trick us into thinking she is capable. She is pretty. She is a good speech reader. She is likeable. SHE IS NOT PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL!!!!

Wow, I must have missed ABC News story on black people against Obama. Or hair-plugs for men against Biden. Maybe the lonely women of NY should spend some time in Alaska, sounds like they need some action.

I am a 60 year old white, educated, professional AND Christian woman who has looked forward eargerly to having a woman in the White House. However, the RIGHT person in the White House if far more important. Palin does not represent the majority of women in this country. A vote for McCain is dangerous. The possiblity that this woman could be the president is absolutely bone-chilling and more frightening than anything we have faced as a nation in a long time. McCain and Palin's lies, insults, hatred and mockery demonstrate clearly they should not be elected. Experience counts. Intelligence counts. Motives count. Integrity counts. Character counts. These two lose all around. McCain's ads that slam Obama have not so well hidden racial overtones and this alone should not be tolerated and is grounds enough to block them out of the White House.

All I Know is that I have been waiting YEARS for the idiot Bush to stop saying "NUCULER" instead of nuclear and I just heard palin say that incorrect word in Charles Gibson's interview. I am never going to survive this. Is there not a single political adviser that is brave enough to correct these dopes?

Also there seems to be quite a few fake devout Christians and fake rebulicans and independants too.

Its obvious from what you write that you arent what you say you are, but nice try.

Now stop typing and IRON MY SHIRT!

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE, PALIN IS A GOOD CHOICE, OBAMA IS AN IDOT, HE CAN NOT TALK WELL AND HE ONLY PROMISE'S TO RAISE TAX'S AND INCREASE GOVERMENT.
I THINK WE SHOULD GIVE MCCAIN/PALIN A CHANCE AND I THINK SHE WOULD MAKE A HELL OF A PRESIDENT IF NECESSARY.

I thought the interview with Palin was rediculous. She did answer your questions Charlie.... You just didn't like her answers!!! It seemed pretty obvious by your behavior who you support. Did you really think of those questions for the Vice-Presidential candidate or did someone make them up for you? I support McCain and Palin. I have no doubt who's side they are on.

The liberal women of our country just cannot stand the fact that a smart, attractive, successful, strong woman with conservative Christian faith is running for Vice President. They're working overtime trying to discredit this fine woman.
We're a deeply divided nation....even seven years after Sept. 11, 2001....what happened to the passion of just being PROUD AMERICANS?!

Charlie Gibson did a great job with Sarah....her lack of knowledge and experience was obvious. Sarah got a little "testy" when challenged....

It is refreshing to see a woman give Charlie an intelligent response in the Palin interview. Watch his body language as he tries to spew his liberal bullshit but is repelled by her great responses.

Any women who truly supported Hillary could not possibly support Palin - Geez!! Palin doesn't believe that global warming is man-made, she's against abortion even in cases of rape and incest (how inhumane!), she only got her first passport a few months ago and today she says we should go to war with Russia!! The woman is definitely an attempt on McCain's part to misrepresent his platform - he voted for Bush 90% of the time & no amount of razzle-dazzle is going to change that!!

OBAMA in '08!!!!!!!!!!111
