Biden Cites Slumping GDP and Soaring Exxon in Assailing ‘Upside-Down’ GOP Tax Plan

ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe Reports:  Just hours after announcements that the nation’s economy had slowed at the same time as Exxon Mobil recorded record-setting profits, Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., blasted the Republican ticket of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Gov. Sarah Palin for their “upside down” tax plan.

“Here the entire economy of America is shrinking and the oil companies are, this one, in fact, made the largest profit in its history in a quarter,” the Democratic vice-presidential nominee said Thursday in Arnold, Missouri, citing this morning's news that in the third quarter the nation's gross domestic product had fallen 0.3% while Exxon Mobil had raked in $14.83 billion in profits. “Ladies and gentlemen, what more evidence do we need that the Exxon Mobils of the world don’t need a tax break? That $4 billion should go to middle-class taxpayers, people who need the money!”

“John and Gov. Palin have this upside down,” Biden said. “They literally have it upside down.”

The Delaware lawmaker flew in from Florida late last night for a quick rally here just outside St. Louis, emphasizing to a thousand Missouri supporters the importance of their votes next Tuesday in this battleground state.

“We’re back in the Show-Me State and you all are going to make us show you, and you’re gonna make all of us show you and that’s the way it should be, because this is the time, “ he said. “This is the time to make us all ante up. This is the single most important election in the lifetime of anyone, anyone who is within hearing distance of my voice."

“And it is appropriate, it is appropriate that much of this campaign is winding up right here in Missouri,” Biden continued. “Because it is a state, it is a state that wants to know. They don’t want any rhetoric, they don’t want to know - they want to know what is going to happen.”

The six-term senator attempted to show supporters that the Democratic ticket understands how to fix the nation’s financial crisis, delivering a speech focused almost solely on the country’s struggling economy, specifically referencing a Chrysler plant in nearby Fenton that just closed down.

“Just yesterday…the last minivan came off the assembly line at the Chrysler plant," Biden said. "It was a white Dodge minivan. And the important thing I want everybody who doesn’t understand about labor to understand, it came off the line two days early. Now let me tell you what I mean. Think of this a minute. These workers, at that Chrysler minivan plant took pride to the very, very, very end to produce the best product, the best product that they could produce.”

Biden described how he had gone to a General Motors plant that closed down near his Wilmington home years ago, greeting employees who had just been laid off.

“Part of government’s responsibility is to be there when things aren’t going well," he noted. "And people would walk by and do a number of expletive deleteds, deleteds to me. You know, ‘Biden da-da.’ But I promise you, 85% would get halfway across the parking lot and they’d walk back to me and say, ‘Joe, thanks for being here’.”

Amidst numerous reports that he has been “muzzled” by the campaign to prevent any inflammatory off-the cuff comments, Biden continued sticking to script today, although he joked at one point that he had slipped up and gone off-message.

“Now look folks,” began Biden, before spotting the Warriors band in the corner of this Fox High School gym. “Hey, I didn’t even see the band up there. Hey, folks, how you guys doing? Thanks for being here. That’s really nice of you. Thank you.”

Then he paused, perhaps reining himself in before drifting too far off-script.

“That’s what you call getting off-message,” Biden quipped. “But I tell ya, you guys look good.”

I am still waiting for anyone to explain how McCain is any different than Bush on his stance on any issue. He can claim 'change' all he wants, but I think the only change he would truly be able to show would be the name on the oval office door.

Obama - for the future of America!

How Is Mccain going to be different then Bush anyone tell me and Sara Palin is so far to the right so how will either of them be different then Bush

Hey ABC...why did you pull that Obama story about his aunt living in squalor in south Boston?

Posted by: MBNA Joe | Oct 30, 2008 1:56:00 PM

Notice how they keep ol' Joe from discussing the finer points of the Obama spread the wealth tax plan....cant let a little straight talk slip out.

Now this hair plugged turd cares about the average middle class person. Where was this compassion when he was accepting millions from the credit card companies to take the lead on ramming that bancruptcy reform law down our throats? The same credit card companies giving his unqualified son a million dollar a year executive position. Oh yeah..the common man from Scranton alright.

Do you kool aid drinkers really expect change from this guy? He's been in Washington for over 30 years!

0bama is the One who voted for giving the big oils the largest tax credits that resulted in what Joe Biden described as Soaring Exxon profit.

He pretends and tells you other wise.

McCain and Hillary Clinton both voted against giving the big oils tax credits.

Another boneheaded mistake, misjudgment by 0bama.

And where's Sarah Drag Whack Job Palin's medical health record? If she's healthy as she claimed, then what's keeping her from releasing her record? This could be one more knot on McCain's knotted record that his VP nominee doesn't listen to him, or, any of his advisors. What is she hiding? Mental Health problem? Or angry management issue?

McCain voted against the tax cuts for exxon and other oil companies in the bush energy bill.

Obama voted for the tax cuts for exxon and other oil companies in the bush energy bill.

What hypocracy by Biden.

McCain voted against Bush.

Obama voted with Bush for tax cuts for il companies.

McCain showed Real change.

"Biden Da-da?" Is this guy nuts or what?

Both John McCain and Sarah Palin are going around the country raising fear in Americans by claiming communicating with our enemies is a sign of weakness and will undermine American security. Yet, had McCain been President during the Cuban Missile Crisis, it’s quite possible that we would not be here today. Simply, it was behind the scenes discussion between America and the USSR that brought us back from the brink of mutual annihilation.

For those who don’t know, in 1962 American intelligence discovered that Cuba was building nuclear missile launch sites to house Soviet missiles. These missiles would have been able to strike the United States with little warning. This frightening revelation led President John F. Kennedy to put up a naval blockade of Cuba in order to prevent the missiles’ arrival in Cuba. In response, the USSR signaled their willingness to confront the blockade.

Now, if McCain was President in 1962 and had been unwilling to talk without negotiated “preconditions,” the outcome would, more likely than not, have been the continuation of the Russian warships into the blockade. This would have ignited World War III, if not total mutual annihilation.

However, the ships were turned around, but not by force. While initiated by lower level officials in both countries, a willingness of the two sides to come together and talk brought us back from the precipice of destruction at the very last moment. In fact, it was only by a bit of luck that we did not completely destroy ourselves multiple times over. America and the USSR recognized the nearly catastrophic blunder of having no lines of communication by creating the “red phone” immediately afterward to ensure world ending mistakes did not happen.

We, as a nation, cannot afford to have to create communication lines in the midst of a crisis. McCain’s approach is simply a recipe for disaster of epic proportions. McCain has forgotten this important lesson. McCain is no friend of national security on this issue. We need a leader pragmatic enough to know when to use the Military, but also when to reach out.

Please send/recommend this to your friends and family. It’s important for us to critically evaluate this important plank. Our world quite literally depends on it.

Biden is not looking at the facts.

McCain voted against Bush energy bill that gave tax cuts to exxon and other oil companies.

Obama voted with Bush for tax cuts for exxon and other oil companies.

This election is like American Idol and has nothing to do with substance.

When is Biden going to get called out for hypocracy.

How can Biden say that with a straight face when Obama voted for tax cuts for oil companies while McCain voted against them.

I give up with this election.

McCain has gotten a raw deal.

Thank Joe "Credit Card" Biden. How about attacking MBNA and the other interest rate, late fee blood suckers.

Posted by: geevill | Oct 30, 2008 2:09:26 PM

factcheck....did you check Sarah Drag Palin's medical record yet? Obama might have some misjudgment on some issues, but not where the direction of this nation might be.

MBNA Joe....do some more research, then you'll find some truth around your anger and frustration. Or do you need a plunger too?

Also, OBAMA earned every penny he got, WITH THE GREAT HELP OF HIS SUPPORTERS. And HE paid for his family campaign expenses too. HATE CRIPPLES THE HEART.

Exxon still paid 43% in taxes.

Is Joe Biden getting more confused? He just never seems to make a lot of sense.

"Then he paused, perhaps reining himself in before drifting too far off-script."

That's because Axelrod probably has him wear an earpiece feeding lines to him.
Poor Joe is not allowed to run his mouth.

I used to support Sen. Obama, but I'm sick of the Bush-Obama energy policy (Energy Policy Act of 2005, which was written by Pres. Bush and VP Cheney, voted FOR by Sen. Obama, and Sen. McCain voted against). Sen. McCain was right to vote against the Bush-Obama Energy Act, and his call, and credit to the Democratic Congress for listening to John McCain, to drill has caused gas prices to plummet. Sen. McCain has the judgement to lead, to make the big economic decisions, and Sen. Obama, who has never run anything, not a state, not a city, not even a business, he's not even qualified to run a Dairy Queen. No, seriously, if Sen. Obama were to say to McDonald's, "hey brotha, I wrote a book and made $4M last year. I want to franchise a McD's," McDonald's corporation would say, "thanks but no thanks. I'd love to fill our affirmative-action quota, but you're not qualified." Sen. Obama says what matters to be President is the judgement to listen to the right advisors. His spiritual advisor: the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. His education policy advisor: Bill Ayers. His domestic affairs liason: ACORN. His foreign policy advisor: Rashid Khalidi. War? He doesn't know anything about war first-hand. He thinks that's enough, because he has read about it. Typical Ivy League; he thinks he can win at the local poker joint because he's read about how to play poker in some good poker books, whereas the dive-bar crowd, well, they're probably just Naval Academy bitter low-lifes that cling to the Second Amendment and their faith, the same as bigotry, as a way to explain their frustrations.

geevill.....you're more pathetic than our Sarah Drag Palin. This republican is voting for the best team. OBAMA-BIDEN. Our GOP sounds more like hungry-angry hyenas. Calling name is so o o o old rhetoric.

Also, if your Sarah Palin did all that for Alaska, how come the Alaskans don't know and hear of those?

Posted by: khatts98178 | Oct 30, 2008 2:23:20 PM

How about changing your tune Geevill? Don't you have some McCain/Palin site where you can go hang out? God knows I am sick and tired of hearing you bash Joe Biden. Same old, same old, same old.

Why don't you go pay off your credit card bill?
