Biden 'Feeling Good' Following Debate
October 03, 2008 8:29 AM
ABC News' Matt Jaffe Reports: Following Thursday's one and only vice-presidential debate, the mood in the Biden camp was nothing short of buoyant as they bolted out of St. Louis in the middle of the night.
When he arrived at the airport after his big Show-Me State showdown with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Sen. Joe Biden told reporters that he was "feeling good" and flashed two thumbs up.
Aboard the flight back to Wilmington, the good vibes continued with a champagne toast from the senator's son Hunter, one of 15 Biden family members to accompany the Democratic vice-presidential nominee to the Washington University duel.
"I want to make a toast," Hunter announced over the in-flight intercom. "To the next vice-president of the United States, my Dad, Joe Biden."
"And another to the team back there that made it happen.," he added, thanking the Biden staffers.
The Biden camp then raised their glasses of champagne and cheered loudly.
Upon arrival back in Wilmington close to 2:00am, though, thoughts quickly turned to Biden's other son, Beau, whose one-year deployment to Iraq as a National Guardsman begins with a ceremony this weekend. The senator will speak at his eldest son's departure ceremony Friday morning in Dover, after which Beau will spend the weekend with the family before reporting Sunday to Ft. Bliss, TX, for about six weeks of training.
Due to his pending deployment, Beau was unable to accompany his father to the debate.

I would like to comment on the debate last night. I thought Joe Biden did a wonderful job of bringing to the forefront the issues that are upper most in the minds of middle class America today. He tried to make this a real debate and unfortunately Governor Palin wouldn't participate. To her this was a campaign speech not a true debate. Her "down home, I'm one of the people" attitude irratated me to no end. I wanted to hear what she and John McCain planned to do about the serious problems facing our nation right now, not alot of "darns" and "goshes". Your average everyday hard working people of this nation are scared and they are fed up with the huge waste in government today. We're worried about keeping our jobs and our homes, feeding and caring for our families and we did not hear any real answers from the McCain/Palin camp last night. Although I am a registered Republican I am voting for Barack Obama and Joe Biden this election day. For the first time in many years they give us hope that the government of the United States is really listening to the people that put them in office not just giving us lip service. Thank you.

* If you grow up in Hawaii , raised by your grandparents, you're 'exotic, different.'
* Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.
* If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
* Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.
* Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
* Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.
* If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.
* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive and next in line behind a man in his eighth decade.
* If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.
* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and then left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a true Christian.
* If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
* If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.
* If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America 's.
* If your husband is nicknamed 'First Dude', with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.
ok - now I get it.... or do I?

Palin was speaking directly to the American people. Biden was speaking to his reporter comrades. Palin was going after votes. Biden was appealing to Washington DC and the liberal media ad nauseam. In a sense they BOTH connected with their intended audiences. But it's up to Obama and McCain now. They both did what they had to do. Now the real President must stand up. We'll see who takes the mantle in the next few weeks. Great job by both VP's. They were better than their bosses for God's sake!

Hey candidates, did you forget something, what are our big plans to create jobs and fix our economy? The American public is left holding the bag to bail out the banks, how are you going to create jobs so people don't have to deal with this; http://www.buymyhousebeforethebanktakesit.com ... is this the future of America?

Biden made 10 actual mistakes, untruths, about McCain's record on taxes, votes in Senate, war, economy, budget, energy, and his stands on the bailout, which he made a week before Obama. Why cannot people see how many real distortions the Obama Campaign(Chicago mean street style politics) have made?

Dear Palin, you were good for communicating today, you were courageous, no fear, talk straight what you wanted to say, good and I like that, my mom had also the same qualities, I really love that. But, for God's sake, you do not have the capacity for the VP post! This does not mean you have a problem or so, it just that you are way far from the experience and judgment the job needs. It is really shameful especially for the McCain Camp. But I think it is good and on purpose for the lobbyists, so that they can run Washington as they want and keep on taking our money. If McCain wins and in case "God forbids it" you became president, then I think they are going to love it even more...

While Palin "read" and "parroted" her responses from talking points from debate boot camp AND refused to answer the questions asked, Joe Biden demonstrated his wealth of experience and authentic understanding on foreign affairs, domestic affairs and the plight of the working poor and middle class. He explained precisely how these two competing platforms would be real change; Palin did not explain that at all. She can wink and parrot and say doggone all she wants but that is all surface theatrics (and frankly, embarrassing). Biden demonstrated an incredible depth and breadth of experience and understanding. We need someone who can actually change the path of this country which is in a downward spiral. We do not need memorized cliches. Biden clearly articulated a long list of how McCain is NOT a maverick. Obama and Biden together provide the country with thoughtful ideas, calm understanding and a fresh new way to go forward.

Palin was a strategic political move by McCain to get Hilary's disenchanted voters, not because he thought she was right for the job. This was so obvious and people still act like she is capable of running a country like the US. Wake up.

Palin's "folksey" charm was an embarressment and an insult to anyone who lived/lives in small towns across America as I did. Her refusal to answer questions asked in the debate showed two things: total disrespect for a respectful debate forum and diversionary tactics to hide her lack of knowledge on issues/policies and world events. I did not expect her to know as much as Biden, but reciting "talking points" with sarcastic confidence does not show any depth of knowledge or give me any comfort in knowing she is a "heart-beat away" from becoming president. McCain/Palin must think "small town America" is too STUPID to vote based on policies, isssues, and candidate qualifications if they have to continue the "Beverly Hillbillies" sideshow in order to gain votes. There are a lot of very intelligent people who live in small towns that want serious answers to serious problems...not a "wink" and a "awe-shucks".

If dodging questions and rumpling nonsense are qualification for the VP of the USA, then may God bless us All. This is the kind of stupidity that being sold to the American people for the last 8 years. Based her debate performance, she may not even win a high school debate because she did not understand either foreign and economy issues facing the nation today. Winking may win a beauty bikini contest but not qualified to be the Vice President, let alone the President of the United States.
