Hank Williams Jr. Serenades McCain, Palin
October 13, 2008 4:13 PM
ABC News' Kate Snow and Imtiyaz Delawala Report: Hank Williams Jr. sure knows how to get a crowd goin'. On a small stage in the middle of a sea of red t-shirts at the Richmond International Raceway this afternoon, Williams stood a few feet from Governor Sarah Palin to sing the Star Spangled Banner. But it was his next song that was a surefire hit in this conservative crowd.
"The left wing liberal media has always been a close knit family. But most of the American people don't believe it anyway, you see. Stop and think it over before you make your decision. If they smell something wrong, they're gonna come down strong," Williams intoned.
The song "McCain-Palin tradition" was set to the music of Williams’ country classic "Family tradition", a song written in response to critics who said he wasn’t living up to the legend of his father, Hank Williams Senior. The original song contains lyrics about drinking and smoking marijuana.
The new ditty is a completely new political take on that tune with lyrics critical of the media and Democrats.
It compares Governor Sarah Palin to a "mama bear in Idaho. She’ll protect your family’s cubs."
"This old union's got problems. That is plain to see. The Democrats bankrupted Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, just like 1-2-3. The bankers didn’t want to make all those bad loans. But Bill Clinton said "you got to!" Now they want to bail out. What I'm talking about, is a democrat liberal hoodoo!" Williams sang in Richmond.
According to lyrics released by the McCain-Palin campaign, the song’s chorus is: "John N Sarah tell ya just what they think. And they’re not gonna blink. And they’re gonna fix this country. Cause they’re just like you n’ ole Hank. Yes John is a maverick. And Sarah fixed Alaska’s broken condition. They’re gonna go just fine. We’re headed for better times. It’s a McCain – Palin tradition."
But Williams sang the song twice on Monday, once at a joint McCain-Palin rally in Virginia Beach and the second time at the Richmond Raceway.
And he didn’t always stick to the song sheet.
At the first appearance in Virginia Beach, Williams added a line to the song about Barack Obama.
"John and Sarah tell you just what they think. And they're not gonna blink. And they don't have terrorist friends to whom their careers are linked," Williams sang.
That line is not included in the lyrics released by the campaign.
Nor is another line that Williams included in Richmond about Governor Palin. It sounds on the tape like he sings: "Why do you hunt? God why do you fish? How can you be so smart and be such a good lookin’ dish?"
Palin is standing just a few feet away.
The ABC transcription of Hank Williams Jr’s "McCain-Palin Tradition", as sung in Virginia Beach:
The left wing liberal media has always been a close knit family
But most of the American people don't believe it anyway you see
Stop and think it over
Before you make your decision
If they smell something wrong, they're gonna come down strong
And say McCain-Palin tradition
This old union's got problems
That is plain to see
The democrats bankrupted Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
Just like 1-2-3
The bankers didn’t want to make all those bad loans
But Bill Clinton said "you got to!"
Now they want to bail out
what I'm talking about
Is a democrat liberal hoodoo!
To me and you
John and Sarah tell you just what they think
And they're not gonna blink
And they don't have terrorist friends to whom their careers are linked
Yeah John is his own man
And Sarah fixed Alaska's broken condition
They're gonna do just fine
We're headed for good times
You know McCain-Palin Tradition
I am very proud
Of our country's name
But no society is perfect
And we have had our stains
If I'm down at the coffee shop
Someone wants to give our flag friction
We say please move on, we're standing strong
That's an Old John McCain tradition
John and Sarah tell you just what they think
And they're not gonna blink
They're gonna fix this country, cuz they're just like good ol' Hank
Yeah John is his own man
And Sarah fixed Alaska's bad condition
They're gonna get it right, we're gonna see the light, an old McCain-Palin tradition
Some are bound to tell you
I'm preaching to the choir
And that is very true, and we are going higher
Like a Mama bear in Idaho
She'll protect your family's condition
If you mess with her cubs, she's gonna take off the gloves, that's an American female tradition
John and Sarah tell you just what they think
And they're not gonna blink
They're gonna fix this country
Cuz they're just like good ol' Hank
Yes John is his own man
Sarah fixed Alaska's bad tradition
They're gonna see the light
We're gonna be just fine
Oh! McCain-Palin tradition
The McCain-Palin campaign released lyrics of the song "McCain-Palin tradition" by Hank Williams, Jr.:
The left wing liberal media have
Always been a real close knit family
But, most of the American People
Don’t believe em anyway ya see
Stop and think it over
Before you make your decision
If they smell something
They’re gonna come down strong
It’s a McCain – Palin tradition
Now this old Union’s got problems
That is plain to see
The Democrats bankrupted Fannie Mae N Freddie Mac
Just like 1, 2, 3
The bankers didn’t want to make all those bad loans,
But Bill Clinton said you got to
Now they want a bail out, what I’m talking about
Is a Democrat liberal who doo
CHORUS
John N Sarah tell ya
Just what they think
And they’re not gonna blink
And they’re gonna fix this country
Cause they’re just like you N ole Hank
Yes John is a maverick
And Sarah fixed Alaska’s broken condition
They’re gonna go just fine
We’re headed for better times
It’s a McCain – Palin tradition
I am very proud of America’s name
Bu no society is perfect
And we have had our stains
If I’m down at the coffee shop and
Somebody wants to give our flag friction
We say please move on
Cause we’re standing strong
That’s an old John McCain tradition
CHORUS
John N Sarah tell ya

And they’re not gonna blink
And they’re gonna fix this country
Cause they’re just like you N ole Hank
Yes John is a maverick
And Sarah fixed Alaska’s broken condition
They’re gonna go just fine
We’re headed for better times
It’s a McCain – Palin tradition
Some are bound to tell you I’m
Preaching to the choir
And that is very true
And we are going even higher
Like a mama bear in Idaho
She’ll protect your family’s condition
If you mess with her cubs
She’s gonna take of the gloves
It’s an American female tradition
CHORUS
John N Sarah tell ya
Just what they think
And they’re not gonna blink

Good News America!
The DOW jumped up 900+ points today.
When the DOW is up, Obama is DOWN.
There goes the ECONOMY.
Let's see WHAT else can the Democrats think that would benefit them.
**************************************
A one day rebound and you think the economy is off the table? All fixed and off people's minds?????
Dude, I have a bridge to nowhere I'd like to sell ya!

Why do you McCain supporters use all caps? It is really annoying and disrespectful to those trying to communicate in a rational, constructive manner.
Never mind. I answered my own question.

That was a good one! (about three years ago)

Southern IL ,
Well, DUDE!
I am a FIRM believer in the Free Market System. Unlike your candidate, he wants to "SPREAD" the wealth around. You know it like "Income Re-distribution" thing that the former USSR, Cuba, Venezuela, Mao, etc... that does not work!
So, when people start to believe instead of being mis-informed and dis-informed by your candidate, it will prevail.
What else is LEFT when the Economy is start "self-recovery" to de-bunk your candidate promoting the "welfare" system.
I have enough money to buy your Bridge to Nowhere.
PS: Don't forget your CANDIDATE voted for it, too.
Have fun in the soup lines!

What better representation of what the GOP stands for than a NASCAR event, the single most race-exclusive sport in our society. The GOP called Obama a rock star when he had fundraisers in Hollywood with big stars. Does this make McCain a country star? Oh I forgot, Grandma Dynamite is the lead dog on the Republican ticket. I actually like Hank Williams Jr. & I'm a black guy. His song "The Devil went down to Georgia" was one of the first rap songs I'd ever heard. I know most people wouldn't dare call it rap but that's what it is. And unlike a lot of people, his support of McCain/Palin will not stop from buying or listening to his music. I never bought or listened to it to begin with, so it's no skin off my back. Oh yeah, why is it OK for Bristol's baby daddy to drop out of school? Had this been Obama's daughter's baby daddy & he dropped out, I can't imagine the vitrol we'd be hearing from the GOP. He's a senior, why drop out now? He'd better be careful & don't get on Grandma Dynamite's & the First Dude's bad side. We all saw what they did to the trooper guy. The Palins do know how to carry a grudge.

the same folks that you refer to in such hateful, divisive, tones are the same folks that comprise the majority of our military.
YOUR TIME IS COMING TO ENLIST AND SHOW YOUR LOYALTY TO OBAMA.
so get ready to suit up and head off to the nearest enlistment center as you will be expected to serve YOUR commander in chief.

Southern IL,
You are SLOW reader, aren't you?
I used CAP as in CAPITAL to emphasize the word!
DUDE, go EASY on that Kool-aid!

I don’t get this “White Supremeness” label that obolony followers are trying to pin on the hero John McCain. When you have a black person running with 99.9% of blacks worshiping at his feet, then yes, of course, color is going to be missing from the hero John McCain’s rally’s, duh! When the winds shift against obolony he will be a muslim, again? As always. When obolony loses, poor little michelle won’t be proud of American again..so sad. Obolony coined the phrase “typical white person” that is the racist, supremeness remark that gets ignored.

Before either candidate wins, I have to air my discontent with the electoral college system of determining the Presidency.
Why are the people in say, Florida, more important than those in Rhode Island? Or the people in Ohio more important than the people in Maine?
Just because there is a denser population in particular areas, doesn't mean people living there are more patriotic, more important, or more politically educated. What a shame that the election, EVERY YEAR, comes down to a state or two which determine the winner because of the large number of electoral votes they were awarded.
Every citizen is an individual in this country and for that reason, the popular vote should elect.
This is just another example of dumb moves this country made many years ago and is still stuck in the same rut.

I don't doubt that you do have all that money. I could tell from your thoughtful, intelligent posts that you were a wealthy, well-educated individual. I also discerned from your posts that you are also good at "spreading" stuff around!

Why wasnt there a line in the song about seeing Russia from her house? Im dissapointed, that song is not going to be a hit.
Hank Williams Jr should be ashamed of himself, dragging his family name in the dirt like that.

Southern IL
Read the article. The original song references smoking weed. So Hank Williams Jr. is not only a sub-par country singer riding on his Dad's talent, but also a drug user.
Like George W. Bush, cocaine user and noted drunk
