McCain at Downingtown Rally: 'Joe the Plumber' was Debate's 'Real Winner'
October 16, 2008 3:11 PM
ABC News’ Bret Hovell Reports: At his first rally after Wednesday night’s presidential debate, John McCain told a noontime crowd in Downingtown Penn., that he had had done well the night before – but there was someone who McCain thought might have done even better.
“My friends, we had a good debate last night,” McCain said. “It was a lot of fun. You know, I thought I did pretty well – the real winner last night was Joe the Plumber!”
The Republican senator was referring to Joe Wurzelbacher, a 34 year-old plumber of 15 years and aspiring business owner. Wurzelbacher met the Obama during a campaign event in Toledo, Ohio Sunday, and asked Obama if his proposed tax plan included tax increases on incomes of more than $250,000. The now infamous exchange between the two men was mentioned by McCain early in Wednesday night’s debate to exemplify differences in the candidates’ economic policies.
“Joe’s the man! He won,” McCain said. “And small business owners won across America. They won because the American people are not going to let Senator Obama raise their taxes in a tough economy. They’re not going to let him do it my friends.”
McCain continued to talk about Joe, mentioning that – he says – Senator Obama told Joe he would “spread the wealth around.”
“He wants government to take Joe’s money and give it to somebody else. His hard earned dollars, we’re not going to stand for that,” McCain said. “American didn’t become the greatest nation on earth by spreading the wealth. We became the greatest nation on earth by creating new wealth.”
McCain also commended the rally’s attendees – there were only about 1,000 of them – for being there to support him, as he said last night. He told them he was proud of them. He alluded to last week’s cable news furor surrounding temperament of his crowds.
“Before I go any further,” McCain said toward the beginning of his remarks, “I’d like to recognize – you know there’s been some comments about people who come to our rallies, I cannot tell you how proud I am of all of you. I cannot tell you how proud I am. Every working man and woman who’s here, every family member.”
One member of the crowd shouted “No Obama!” at the top of her lungs as McCain was launching into the scripted portion of his remarks. McCain took the opportunity to put his foot down about outbursts.
“I need to have a conversation with you for a few minutes here,” McCain said, evoking a little bit of nervous laughter.
McCain repeated perhaps his best line of the debate, reiterating that he was not George Bush.
“If [Obama] wanted to run against George Bush, he should have run four years ago.”
Both McCain and his wife Cindy congratulated the Philadelphia Phillies (Downingtown is a Suburb of Brotherly Love) for clinching National League Pennant last night.
McCain was introduced by Joseph Lieberman, I-CT, who said that McCain’s debate performance was hugely important.
“We turned the corner in the debate last night, didn’t we?” he asked the crowd, who seemed to agree. “We changed the momentum, we’re on the road to victory in Pennsylvania and for all America.”
Lieberman also said that he gets asked in Connecticut how to help John McCain in the tightly contested battleground states.
“People in Connecticut who are for John McCain say to me, ‘Joe, what can we do to help John McCain?’ I say ‘Quickly! Move to Pennsylvania!’

Keep beating that dead horse, no one cared about a guy who might get taxed more if he makes 250k, but the rest of us don't so... yeah.
Is it just me, or does it look like he pauses for laughter or clapping and it never comes? like the little chuckle from last night.

Oh, and isn't Obama's tax plan not on what you pull in as business, but what you actually profit after all of your expenses are paid off and written off?
If you clear 250k or more a year in profit, then yeah you will be taxed a little higher then you are now. But that isn't most people, most people are lucky, i stress lucky to make over 60k as a family.

See? McCain does not want you to look at him, he has to find someone else to make the campaign about or else he'll lose!
McCain does not inspire people. He does not make you want to go out and vote for him. So he has to find a distraction. That's what Palin was...that's what this plumber is.
And the media is falling for it.
Get back to issues!

You are dead wrong... it is anything over 250,000... profit or not.

Amazing. McCain seems to think that Joe just appeared and had not been sent to try to see Obama. Amazing. This man is now making Bill Clinton look like nothing when it comes to sleeze.

I think Joe is confusing revenue, profit and taxable income. Joe''s revenue is 278K--not his profit. He has salaries, benefits, costs for running business (including paying loans) to deduct.
Even at a net of 250K+ he will only pay marginally more taxes on the amount above 250K (and less on the below). On every net 10K above 250K (after all those deductions) he will pay $300. The rest is taxed the same as before.
This is NOT the working capital of his business. It is his profit taking after whatever he invests in his business.
If Joe's profit really is 278K, he will only be taxed more on 28K and only $870/year or 2 dollars and 30 cents a day. That's a missing latte, so Starbucks may whine ;-). By comparison--Joe will have about 200K after tax to spend in any case. That is almost 17K net a month or over 7,000 lattes a month. I think he can share a few.
Or he can invest the money and make more money and only pay 15% in capital gains tax. If he saves 10K of those a month and has a net gain of 7% a year, he can retire when he is 45. With a wealth of 2 million in the bank, or wait until 65 and have 12 million. I call that the American Dream!
I wish I was in the Plumbing-Owning-Business!
The $2.30/day will be part of what Joe''s customer's get and can use to hire him, but most of their extra spending dollars will come from the CEO''s of Big Oil. They have a much higher net income than Joe will ever have, and will have to give up a few more lattes.
Joe's business (and Joe) will fare better under Obama''s proposed tax system than they do now as the people who have a net income of over 250K a year will pay a little bit more on what is above 250K and a bit less on the amount below. For many it will be a "wash", but when your net income is in the millions, you will have to share with Joe the Plumber.
I think Joe is mislead and misinformed, and the lack of critical journalism makes things worse.

attack Joe the plumber. good plan.
Posted by: geevill | Oct 16, 2008 3:45:08 PM
Senator McCain, why did you ruin Joe's life?
You should have checked his background before putting your whole campaign on someone who
1) In 2007, the state filed a tax lien against Joe for not paying his taxes.
2) Lied about his income. He doesn't make anywhere close to $250,000. In fact, he'll pay less tax under Obama's plan.
3) Lied about being a plumber (he has no license). Was working as a plumber without a license (which is required by the county he works in).
Senator McCain should have done his research before spending the last 24 hours championing someone who isn't paying his taxes.
Posted by: Dan | Oct 16, 2008 3:46:37 PM
Uh, Ken. He isn't required to have a plumber's license until he buys the business according to the laws in the state he operates in (maybe you should have read all of that article). He has worked as an almost partner with the owner for a long time and there have been discussions about what would happen one day when he "takes over," one buddy working with another and coming along in the business.
A hard-working American who has made his way from the beginning on up in a business that a lot of us wouldn't even want to do (too much pooh). What is so wrong with him that he exemplifies liars and cheats? His concern about his taxes increasing makes it obvious that he has no intention on cheating on them...

So must we now endure 3 weeks of having to hear about "Joe the plumber" and Joe Sixpack and all the hockey moms? McCain/Palin have to rely on catchphrases and nonsense like "Joe the plumber" because they don't have anything else to run on. McCain/Palin are completely bankrupt at this point, and sadly, "Joe the plumber" will become just another catchphrase that in the end means absolutlely nothing to McCain/Palin. All McCain/Palin are doing is using poor "Joe the plumber." In truth, neither McCain nor Palin give a flying fig about "Joe the plumber." McCain/Palin's cultists might fall for this bit of nonsense, but the rest of America will not.

If Obama is elected, what are his chances of raising taxes on dividends, capital gains, corporations, inheritance, etc? Even with a Democratic Congress, he has little chance. In 2000, when George Bush repealed the inheritance tax, every single Republican voted to support him, along with 60 moderate Democrats in Congress. The South and West have Democratic Congressmen who are moderate, not liberals. These people have constituents who basically are conservative. They will not risk losing an election in their own districts by supporting increased taxes, especially on inheritance. As President, Obama will be singing the praises of high taxation from the Oval Office, and a good one-third of the Democrats will be voting against him. All hell will break loose in the Democratic Party – the liberals vs. the moderate Democrats from TN, AR, MT, SD, ND, KS, GA, FLA, AL, KY. I’ve lived in the south all my life. No way will Democratic Senators or House members vote for increased taxes on business, dividends or inheritance. It just won’t happen. I don’t want to see Obama elected, but on the other hand, it will be so sweet watching the two factions of the Democratic Party turn on each other!! I wonder if Obama will start calling the moderate Democrats racists when they don’t vote his way?

McCain doesn't know the difference between $250,000.00 net revenue and $250,000.00 gross profits.
The business "Joe the Plumber" expressed an interest in purchasing might have net revenues of $250,000.00. It seems unlikely that "Joe", a self-employed, unlicensed "plumber" is currently in a position to purchase a business that earns a gross profit of $250,000.00.
On the other hand, under Obama's tax plan, a business with $250,000.00 net revenues falls into that category of businesses that would NOT see an increase in taxes.
In a word, the business Joe the Plumber claims he is considering would not see any increase in its taxes under Obama's economic plan.
Or, as Obama put it last night in the debate - ZERO.
