McCain at Downingtown Rally: 'Joe the Plumber' was Debate's 'Real Winner'

ABC News’ Bret Hovell Reports: At his first rally after Wednesday night’s presidential debate, John McCain told a noontime crowd in Downingtown Penn., that he had had done well the night before – but there was someone who McCain thought might have done even better.

“My friends, we had a good debate last night,” McCain said. “It was a lot of fun. You know, I thought I did pretty well – the real winner last night was Joe the Plumber!”

The Republican senator was referring to Joe Wurzelbacher, a 34 year-old plumber of 15 years and aspiring business owner. Wurzelbacher met the Obama during a campaign event in Toledo, Ohio Sunday, and asked Obama if his proposed tax plan included tax increases on incomes of more than $250,000. The now infamous exchange between the two men was mentioned by McCain early in Wednesday night’s debate to exemplify differences in the candidates’ economic policies.

“Joe’s the man! He won,” McCain said. “And small business owners won across America. They won because the American people are not going to let Senator Obama raise their taxes in a tough economy. They’re not going to let him do it my friends.”

McCain continued to talk about Joe, mentioning that – he says – Senator Obama told Joe he would “spread the wealth around.”

“He wants government to take Joe’s money and give it to somebody else. His hard earned dollars, we’re not going to stand for that,” McCain said. “American didn’t become the greatest nation on earth by spreading the wealth. We became the greatest nation on earth by creating new wealth.”

McCain also commended the rally’s attendees – there were only about 1,000 of them – for being there to support him, as he said last night. He told them he was proud of them. He alluded to last week’s cable news furor surrounding temperament of his crowds.

“Before I go any further,” McCain said toward the beginning of his remarks, “I’d like to recognize – you know there’s been some comments about people who come to our rallies, I cannot tell you how proud I am of all of you. I cannot tell you how proud I am. Every working man and woman who’s here, every family member.”

One member of the crowd shouted “No Obama!” at the top of her lungs as McCain was launching into the scripted portion of his remarks. McCain took the opportunity to put his foot down about outbursts.

“I need to have a conversation with you for a few minutes here,” McCain said, evoking a little bit of nervous laughter.

McCain repeated perhaps his best line of the debate, reiterating that he was not George Bush.

“If [Obama] wanted to run against George Bush, he should have run four years ago.”

Both McCain and his wife Cindy congratulated the Philadelphia Phillies (Downingtown is a Suburb of Brotherly Love) for clinching National League Pennant last night.

McCain was introduced by Joseph Lieberman, I-CT, who said that McCain’s debate performance was hugely important.

“We turned the corner in the debate last night, didn’t we?” he asked the crowd, who seemed to agree. “We changed the momentum, we’re on the road to victory in Pennsylvania and for all America.”

Lieberman also said that he gets asked in Connecticut how to help John McCain in the tightly contested battleground states.

“People in Connecticut who are for John McCain say to me, ‘Joe, what can we do to help John McCain?’ I say ‘Quickly! Move to Pennsylvania!’

Joe the Plumber knows that taxes are too high already.

Some of these postings seem to imply that if someone is "hard working" they they are going to be in that tax bracket of over $250,000. If they are under that then somehow they are not "hard woring" enough. What a load of garbage.

There are thousands upon thousands of "hardworking" Americans, that will never come close to making $250,000 a year. They work hard everyday at jobs those who are making that kind of money depend on in one way or aother. They pay the bills, they pay their taxes, they give some to the church, and they buy candy bars and wrapping paper from kids who knock on their door. They keep their lawns mowed and their noses clean, and they will still NEVER make $250,000 a year. Trying to make "Joe the Plumber" out to be the average American is rediculous. Does the "Jim" or "Jane" who works every bit as hard as Joe (and maybe harder) think that maybe someone who is bringing in 6 or 7 times the salary they are could maybe pay a little more in taxes, probably so. Would they like, at last, for a tax break for the middle class, absolutely. I don't think Joe qualifies for middle class. No one is "punishing" him for succeeding. Taxes are required for our society to functions as it does (oh scream if you want to, but they do...think police, fire, roads, schools, libraries, etc). Those who are making 250,000 or more could give a little more in taxes, and still not face the struggles that "Jim" and "Jane" are as they too work hard, love their family and their country.

All you folks who are complaining about Obama "raising taxes". Do you even realize that technically, all Obama will be doing is restoring taxes to the levels they were at before your incompetent President Bush and his cronies in Congress took over this country eight years ago and then promptly ran our economy into the ground?

Obama intends to raise taxes? NOPE.

He intends to restore taxes to the rates that applied under RONALD REAGAN!

---

You don't even know the history of the country, you don't even remember the policies of your party's greatest hero - Ronald Reagan - yet you dare call yourselves "patriots"?

You're not patriots, you;'re misinformed, willfully ignorant scoundrels.

Joe is a registered Republican. And his company, his small company that all this nonsense is about consists of him and the current owner. TWO people. That’s what we’re all worked up about? And they don’t make over $250K, so his taxes WON’T be increased under Obama’s plan. It’s just another one of McCain’s stunts to distract the American people away from the real issues

Geevill:

Taxes are too high already?

Presumably you and you're candidate, Sen. John McCain, have a plan for paying down the deficit.

The nation is waiting impatiently to hear that plan!

Instead, all we hear from McCain and Palin is more cr*p about a Professor of Education at the University of Illinois who served with Obama on the board of a project sponsored by the Annenberg Foundation.

---

Meanwhile, we have to go with the candidate, Sen. Barack Obama, who at least seems to have thought about the problems facing this nation.

So, you don't like Obama's plan. Well and good. So, you don't like paying taxes. Fine.

What is YOUR plan?

McCain doesn't seem to have one, other than to keep spending steady, and cut taxes.

The Titanic hits the iceberg, and Capt. McCain says - I know what to do - let's blow another hole in the hull, at least that way we'll sink more quickly.

To paraphrase Ronald Reagan

John McCain's economic plan:

"A sinking tide lowers all ships!"

LOL

I'm amazed at the Republicans are you all stupid you don't think McPain and Palin are going to raise your taxes they have to so do the democrats we are trillion's of dollars in debt how do you think we are going to pay that down if we don't are children will inherit this mess suck it up all of you we have to pay more taxes one way or the other we have no choice. To think either party isn't going to do it is dilusional. And to base your ballot on the lies that we will get a tax break is just stupid. I will be voting for Obama not because of his opionion on taxes but on his overall policies. John McCain scares me what other war are we going to get into with him and note the world is watching and they don't like McPain. Think of that when you put your children to bed tonight.

oe: Tax cheat, unlicensed and Keating family member
October 16, 2008, 2:48PM

So, let me get this straight. Joe "the plumber" Wurzelbacher has no license to practice plumbing, has neglected to pay his taxes and is a relative of the Keating family. The first two points are largely irrelevant, though they will no doubt be studied by the media for hours. But the question the media should be asking is this: Is Wurzelbacher a McCain campaign plant, who was deliberately placed in Obama's path in Ohio? And if so, what does this say about John McCain's relationship with the Keatings, which he insists ended years ago? And if they say he wasn't a plant, is this just too much of a coincidence to believe?

McCain has gone off the deep-end....Joe the Plumber the winner? I guess McCain needed to replace Ayres with somebody...

Posted by: indy_voter | Oct 16, 2008 4:39:06 PM

he is not an actual licensed plummer and never has been one... and if he is taking home 250K+ in income he is doing better than most of the world. unless Joe is so into not paying taxes that he deosnt mind if the Chinese buy our country... paying taxes is patriotic, overtaxing or wasting tax money is not

Why are we wasting so much energy talking about a man who is fortunate enough to be able to consider buying his employer's business, when so many in America are just worried about keeping their JOBS?

Posted by: NV_Sparkle | Oct 16, 2008 4:58:24 PM

Joe the plumber:

I am not a plumber, but I play one on TV. If Sarah Palin can run for VP I am qualified to be a plumber.

Posted by: anthony | Oct 16, 2008 4:59:22 PM

Now that we know Joe is not registered or licenced to be a plumber, McCain's campaign is officially down the drain.

Obama/Biden 08

I am shocked at anyone who could vote for Obama. He is not qualified to be president. Joe Biden said that six months ago. So, now he is qualified?
Add his qualifications for taking over this country in a time of crisis to that fact and what do you have: Hope. You hope he can do the job. I would rather hope an old man who has been there can do the job. Biden? He said Hilary would have been a better choice. He was right. The VOICE OF THE PEOPLE

We democrats need a catchy guy phrase too- way sure to win lots of votes! I think we could have Rosie the Riveter" or "Frank the Butcher", or "Jerry the Carpenter", blue collar guys and gals like "Joe the Plumber", and like guys and gals everywhere who make more than a quarter of million yearly. Just average hard working people, like you and me. This is clearly a winning strategy to win the White House in the last two weeks of the campaign, not desperate or ill-conceived at all, destined to make clear to the undecided voters to come over to the democrats. Yea, makes a whole bunch of sense, doesn't it? Seriously?

Posted by: Jillian | Oct 16, 2008 5:14:33 PM

Joe is not a plumber?

Well Obama is not a US citizen.

Posted by: geevill | Oct 16, 2008 5:22:20 PM

Just saw this on the web....Joe the Plumber (Joe Wurzelbacher) of Cincinnati, Ohio may be related to one Robert Wurzelbacher of Cincinnati, Ohio, who happens to be Charles Keating's son-in-law. Robert Wurzelbacher was implicated in the Keating 5 scandal, and
sentenced to 40 months in prison in 1993. Wurzelbacher is also a huge Republican donor.

Now I don't if the Joe the Plumber is related or was a Republican plant but isn't it incredibly stupid of the McCain campaign to push this guy as the new symbol of their campaign given the fact that they share the same very uncommon last name? You think a light bulb should gone off in McCain's head, no?

Joe the plumber said to Katie Couric this morning, that Obama "tap-danced around, almost as good as Sammy Davis, Jr." What a bigot this guy is! Another one of those supporters that McSame is proud of. These people that McCain associates with, props up, then dumps- unbelievable. Poor judgment again by the old McCurdled Mc-Out-Of-It.

Posted by: Jillian | Oct 16, 2008 5:45:57 PM

Joe the Plumber is Everyman in America.
He represents the type of reaction that most thoughtful American voters have about
Obama. Being from Illinois, Obama record is pitiful for the citizens of his own state. He spent all of his time running for office and writing books so that he had no time to vote on issues other than to vote present. Which meant he was absent. Joe the Plumber is a real voter with many reservations about how he can survive in the socialist word of Obama will create if he is elected. We have nothing to fear about our economy but Obama. Taxnation will be our new identity. Helping those who don't work to earn working class status has one caveat; they need to work not just live off the redistributed earnings of others.
