McCain to Obama: I Have 'Guts' to Bring Up Ayers
October 14, 2008 12:11 PM
ABC News' Ron Claiborne, Teddy Davis, and Arnab Datta Report:
Speaking to a St. Louis radio station on Tuesday, John McCain said that Barack Obama's recent suggestion that McCain does not have guts to raise the Bill Ayers issue to his face "probably ensured" that the former Weather Underground leader will come up in Wednesday's final presidential debate.
"You have another debate coming up. The final debate. Many of your supporters are eager for you to confront Senator Obama on the Bill Ayers relationship in particular. Hillary Clinton even brought this up during the primary. Sen. Obama says you should have the guts to do it in person. So will you?" McCain was asked by KMOX's Mark Reardon.
"Oh yeah," said McCain. "You know, I was astonished to hear him say that he was surprised for me to have the guts to do that. Because the fact is that the question did not come up in that fashion so--you know--I think he's probably ensured that it will come up this time."
Listen to McCain's KMOX radio interview here.
McCain's indignation was provoked by Obama telling ABC News' Charles Gibson last week that McCain was not willing to level the Ayers attack to his face.
"Well, I am surprised that, you know, we've been seeing some pretty over-the-top attacks coming out of the McCain campaign over the last several days that he wasn't willing to say it to my face," said Obama.
Watch Obama discuss the Ayers issue with ABC's Gibson here.
During his Tuesday interview with KMOX radio, McCain said "it's not that I give a damn about some washed up terrorist and his terrorist wife that on 2001 said they wished they'd bombed more. What I care about -- and what the American people care about -- is whether [Obama] is being truthful with the American people."
McCain, who has regularly distorted Obama's tax record but is right in saying that Obama went back on his public financing pledge, went on to argue that Obama's effort to downplay his relationship with Ayers is part of a broader reluctance to level with the public.
"Whether it be on raising taxes or whether it be his commitment to take public financing," said McCain "[O]r whether it be on his association with Ayers who he said was a 'guy in the neighborhood' when the fact is he launched his political career in Bill Ayers' living room."
"So that's the question," McCain concluded, "'are you being truthful with the American people?' because they want someone that you can trust."
After interviewing a dozen people who know both Obama and Ayers, The New York Times wrote earlier this month that Obama has "played down his contacts" with Ayers. But the newspaper concluded that the two men, who worked together on an education project, do not appear to have been close, noting that Obama has never expressed sympathy for the radical views of Ayers whose bombing campaign he has labeled "detestable."
The Obama campaign reacted to McCain's interview by arguing that it was a sign that he did not want to talk about the economy.
"Given his desire to 'turn the page' on discussing the economy, it's not surprising that John McCainw ould want to spend his time talking to the American people about a thoroughly debunked attack that does nothing to help our families," Obama-Biden spokesman Hari Sevugan told ABC News. "That's his choice. Barack Obama will continue to remain focused on solutions to the economic challenges facing the country."

On Tuesday, the Anchorage Daily News also printed a blistering editorial on Palin, calling her response to the State Legislature's Troopergate report "Orwellian."
Sarah Palin's reaction to the Legislature's Troopergate report is an embarrassment to Alaskans and the nation.
She claims the report "vindicates" her. She said that the investigation found "no unlawful or unethical activity on my part."
Her response is either astoundingly ignorant or downright Orwellian.
Page 8, Finding Number One of the report says: "I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act."
In plain English, she did something "unlawful." She broke the state ethics law.
Perhaps Gov. Palin has been too busy to actually read the Troopergate report. Perhaps she is relying on briefings from McCain campaign spinmeisters.
That's the charitable interpretation.

Ya forgot yer ACORN's, chump.
Posted by: ricky | Oct 14, 2008 12:27:42 PM
Barack Obama promised to be honest with us. He has not. The fact is that Ayers, Wright, Rezko, and ACORN are the people with whom Barack Obama worked to change Chicago into what it is today. Now he wants us to give him a chance to change America into what he wants to change it into. Sen. Obama can defend these people, he can even apologize for having ever advancing their agenda, but to deny having ever served their cause is dishonest, and to hide behind the financial crisis by calling everything else "smears" or "distractions" is cowardly and devoid of the dignity of the office which he seeks.

MY FELLOW PRISONERS:
I know that it looks quite stupid to telegraph all of my punches that will be thrown ahead of the fight with "THAT ONE", but I'm going to be knocked out anyway, so I might as well go down flailing aimlessly.
After all, I've got him right where I want him, right? Errrrr, right?

make it known: "All he has to mention is G. Gordon Liddy, or maybe Iran Contra, or Keating 5 or.... Troopergate...... I can keep going."
There's a couple ways Obama can respond. He may well counter-punch with associations of McCain's, but I'm not sure I'd go that way. I'd just blow off McCain with a line about how he and Ayers aren't close, and add that journalists have come to the same conclusion. Now, let's get back to the economy.
If McCain keeps pushing the "you lied" line, Obama should ask him exactly what he said about Ayers that wasn't true, and then maybe counter-punch with references to McCain's lies.
The gist of McCain's argument is Ayers wasn't just a guy in the neighborhood because Obama held a campaign event in his livingroom. Well, that's what local politicians do. They hold campaign events in willing neighbors' livingrooms - whether they know those neighbors well or not.
And with that, McCain looks as small as he is, and the debate turns back to the economy.

The media did full investigations on Obama's relationship to Ayers,so why is it the media hasnt reported on McCain's ties to folks like Gordon Liddy(as Carl Bernstein reported in Huff Post yesterday) or that Cindy McCain continued investments with Keating for years following the Keating5 scandal??

I love the smell of conservative fear in the morning, it smells like...victory.
Posted by: Uncle Sam | Oct 14, 2008 12:31:25 PM
The reason McCain is reluctant to bring up Obama's passing association on a non-profit education board with Ayers, is that Obama will bring up McCain's passing association on a non-profit performing arts commission for unemployed actors with John Wilkes Booth! (yes, McCain is that old)
Posted by: Jay | Oct 14, 2008 12:31:56 PM
Are we sure Obama's old enough to be POTUS?

Obama will be ready for him. McCain will be toast tomorrow!
Posted by: Brandon | Oct 14, 2008 12:32:11 PM
I also hope he brings up some of the things Obama said in his books, maybe Obama can answer them during the debate
From Dreams of My Father:'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.'
From Dreams of My Father : 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.'
From Dreams of My Father:'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.'
From Dreams of My Father: 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.'
From Dreams of My Father:'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself , the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.'
And FINALLY the Most Damning one of ALL of them!!!
From Audacity of Hope:'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction

McCain is walking into a trap. If he launches Ayers, then Obama will counter punch with Keating, who was actually convicted of a crime and was also partners with Cindy and her dad for years after the scandal.
BTW, the Keating 5 scandal is very salient because of the parallels with the current crisis.

BizBag: "And Paul - it doesn't bother you that it was a 'playground level taunt'?"
Nope, this is politics. Here's the thing that non-Obama supporters never understood. We don't worship Obama as someone who is above politics. He's a candidate - by definition a politician. We understand that.
We do, however, see some promise that he'll be respectful and maybe in that small way help us to get past (e.g. grow up beyond) the stupid partisan food fights we've seen for the past couple decades. That's what we mean by a new kind of politics, and that's pretty much all we mean by it.

I continue to be amazed that Senator McCain says Obama is not being truthful with Americans. He has answered this question every time it has come up. He answered it again in the interview with Charlie Gibson. How many times does he have to answer it and what else can he say. Particularly since McCain's running mate refuses to answer ANY questions! A report finds her guilty of abusing her power, her response is to take 3 questions from 3 Alaska reporters, with no follow ups, and the answers are like a recorded line that has no bering on the actual findings in the report. No press conference, no direct statement from her, just a campaign statement that blames Obama. This panel was comprised of 14 members of the Alaska Legislature: 10 Republicans, 4 Democrats. 12 members reviewed the report: 10 Republicans, 4 Democrates. It was started back in July before most of the world had even heard of her. Wonder if Obama will ask McCain when Sarah Palin is going to answer American's question about this truthfully.
Posted by: madknitter | Oct 14, 2008 12:34:29 PM
He won't answer the questions. He blantantly lied during the debate with Hillary when he said that he barely knew Rezko. And he did it with a sincere, straight face. He has perfected the art of lying. His whole life is a lie.

"BTW, the Keating 5 scandal is very salient because of the parallels with the current crisis.'
Then how do you explain that 3 of 5 support Obama? They like what they see?
Posted by: Mack | Oct 14, 2008 12:36:42 PM
Gee Chuck, you pick out quotes without context the way evangelical christians pick out quotes without context from their bibles... with, essentially the same result - a lot of hot air and no substance. "Cain killed Able." "Go ye, therefore, and do likewise." See, if you're going to quote, place it in context!
Posted by: Jay | Oct 14, 2008 12:37:51 PM
both candidates are inept and incompetent "leaders" that the idiots of the two parties and America foisted upon us as one of the most pathetic Presidential elections in recent history
