Obama Basks in the Glow of Powell Endorsement

ABC News' John Berman, Sunlen Miller and Ursula Fahy Report: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., wasted no time basking in the glow of his latest big-name supporter.

"Today, I am beyond honored and deeply humbled to have the support of General Colin Powell," he said before a crowd of 10 thousand in Fayetteville, NC.

Fayetteville sits in the shadow of Fort Bragg, home to the 82nd Airborne, and is a town with deep military roots. So it is no surprise, Obama added, "General Powell has defended this nation bravely, and he has embodied our highest ideals through his long and distinguished public service."

Obama worked to incorporate Powell into the themes of his stump speech, "he knows, as we do, that this is a moment where we all need to come together as one nation – young and old, rich and poor, black and white, Republican and Democrat," said Obama. And he invoked Powell’s name when defending himself against some of the attacks coming lately from the McCain campaign, "He reminded us that at this defining moment, we don't have the luxury of relying on the same political games the same political tactics that are used every election to divide us from one another and make us afraid of one another."

Specifically, Obama tried to parry the new charge from the McCain team, that his tax plan amounts to socialism. "Socialism!" scoffed Obama to a booing crowd, "it's kind of hard to figure how Warren Buffet endorsed me. Colin Powell endorses me and John McCain thinks I’m passing socialism."

While Obama largely stuck to his stump speech, he did pounce on some recent gaffe by the McCain campaign. Yesterday, a McCain surrogate suggested Northern Virginia is not "Real Virginia," and Governor Sarah Plain has commented on visiting pro-America parts of the country. Today Obama said, "There are no real or fake parts of this country. We are not separated by the pro-America and anti-America parts of this nation – we all love this country, no matter where we live or where we come from."

Though it should be added, not everyone loves him. As he visited Cape Fear BBQ and Chicken, he was met by a shouting woman, 54 year-old Diane Fanning, who yelled, "Socialist! Socialist! Socialist! Ger out of here!"

CUMBERLAND COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS PROVIDES AID TO OBAMA CAMPAIGN

RALEIGH—North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Linda Daves released the following statement in response to the Cumberland County Board of Elections expanding hours at two additional polling sites specifically for the purpose of aiding Senator Barack Obama’s rally in Fayetteville today. (“Cumberland County adds two new polling sites,” Fayetteville Observer, 10/18/08)

“It is a gross distortion of the voting process for the Democrat-controlled Cumberland County Board of Elections to expand the number of early polling locations at the last minute to accommodate Senator Obama’s campaign rally. Their action makes the voting process an extension of a partisan political rally and that is clearly inappropriate.

“With the many unanswered questions surrounding Senator Obama’s extensive relationship with ACORN along with the ongoing investigations in numerous states into the organization by election officials and by the FBI, the North Carolina Republican Party finds it astounding that additional voting locations were made available at an ‘emergency meeting’ without adequate notice to the general public. Barack Obama will say or do anything to win.

“To be clear, the North Carolina Republican Party and the people of North Carolina are not against the expansion of polling hours or locations. However, North Carolinians are outraged when it is done at the last minute on an ‘emergency’ basis for the sole purpose of benefitting Senator Obama’s campaign.”

If George Bush endorsed him that would be something. This endorsement just shows that race comes before country for some people.

Julie

Chuck Hagel agrees with Obama on more issues than McCain and the republicans. He even travelled to europe and Iraq with Obama because he knows a McCain presidency will ruin America more than Bush has. This is common sense.

No Chuck Hagel never did Endorse him but its coming, and I recall Hagel saying Mccain has poor Judgement and Hagel agrees with Obama more so Just wait Endorsement is coming!

Mack: "This endorsement just shows that race comes before country for some people."

Mack, are you seriously suggesting that Colin Powell is just endorsing Obama because he's black?

Give me a break. This is a guy who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs and Secretary of State. This is a guy the Republicans would have loved to run for president in 1996 and 2000.

Racist military officers might exist, but as a retired Marine officer myself, I can tell you I honestly never met one. Regardless of your background, from the time an officer hits his first unit as a second lieutenant, he or she quickly realizes there are two kinds of people - those who can consistently get things done for you and those who can't. Through sheer survival instinct, lieutenants learn to see people like that, and thus end up pretty color blind.

Julie

But chuck Hagel has being working with the Obama campaign. He went to Afghanistan, Iraq and Europe with Obama. That is fact.

Posted by: Kenny | Oct 19, 2008 4:23:53 PM

Race before country? No I dont think so!

Posted by: brigitte | Oct 19, 2008 4:24:49 PM

Jwench: "Here's a scenario. What if it were Colin Powell running against Obama?"

Then I'd guess Powell wouldn't have endorsed Obama. Beyond that, what's your point?

Posted by: Paul | Oct 19, 2008 4:25:46 PM

JULIE
If you are claiming Powells Endorsement is a color thing, Explain why Powell didnt endorse sooner and Donated the Max to Mccain? Its because over the course of time Mccain has become SLEAZY ERRATIC,and the Icing on the cake Was SARA PALIN Mccain HAS POOR Judgement!

Posted by: Angie | Oct 19, 2008 4:26:16 PM

Julie and True American

Your next president is Barrack Obama. The earlier you got over it the better. McCain has no judgment to lead and he displayed himself as erratic when the financial crisis broke within the last couple of weeks.

Obama is the candidate with steady hands.
