Obama: My Tax Credits are Not 'Welfare'
October 18, 2008 3:43 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Standing beneath the Gateway Arch in downtown St Louis, Senator Obama responded to claims from the McCain campaign that his tax plan is a "welfare" program because it gives tax credits for people who don't pay federal income taxes.
"I'm not giving tax cuts to folks who don't work, I'm giving tax cuts to people who do work. John McCain is so out of touch with the struggles you are facing that he must be the first politician in history to call a tax cut for working people 'welfare.'"
It is true that the Obama refundable tax credits plan does benefit people who are not paying federal income taxes. But, Obama's tax credits go to people who pay payroll taxes, even if they are too low-income to pay federal income taxes. The Obama campaign says most working people pay more in payroll taxes than income tax.
"The only 'welfare' in this campaign is John McCain's plan to give another $200 billion in tax cuts to the wealthiest corporations in America – including $4 billion in tax breaks to big oil companies that ran up record profits under George Bush," Obama continued, "That's who John McCain is fighting for."
While not mentioning the now infamous "Joe the Plumber" by name – Senator Obama told the crowd that his tax plan would give everyday Americans – and plumbers – access to a tax cut.
"It's time to give a tax cut to the teachers and the janitors who work in our schools; to the cops and firefighters who keep us safe; to the waitresses working double shifts, the nurses in the ER, and yes the plumbers fighting for their American Dream. These workers are the backbone of our country. They’re the ones that Washington has forgotten."
As ABC's Teddy Davis reported this week, in attacking Obama's refundable tax credits, the McCain campaign is overlooking that the centerpiece of the McCain health care plan is a refundable tax credit which would provide $2,500 to every American or $5,000 to every American family for health insurance regardless of whether the adults receiving the benefit work.
Drawing a record breaking rally crowd of 100,000 Senator Obama has high hopes of flipping the state of Missouri, where polls currently show him slightly ahead of Sen. McCain.
"I think the winds of change are blowing all across America. They're blowing here in Missouri, they're blowing in Michigan, they're blowing in Illinois, they’re blowing in VA, and they are blowing in Ohio," Obama said listing many red states where his campaign has their eye on to turn blue.
But the Illinois Senator told the crowd not to get too over-confident.
"Democrats have a way of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory," he said remembering his loss in the New Hampshire primary, "This election's too important to take anything for granted."

Taxes is welfare? Does that mean that as it is right now, cooperate CEO's and Oil companies are getting a welfare check from the government in the same sense? Now McCain wants to give them even more! Taking from the rich? How long has the rich been taking from us, both in tax cuts and price gauging at the pump? I think it's time for the CEO's and Oil companies to pay us back the money they took from us in the first place. McCain just hates this plan because it might take a few thousand off his 4 million dollar yearly income. He doesn't care about America, he cares about himself and power, thats all.

Funny how the bloggers who are so upset with Obama increasing the taxes on people making more than $250,000 have trouble with their caps lock key, spelling and punctuation. I thought rich people had better education.

This is not capitalism it is socialism for the wealthy and economic slavery for everyone else.

If you don't have a job it doesn't matter how much the tax-cut is. And let's face it corporations provide jobs ... welfare to people who don't or won't work does not!

Since the end of Clinton's term, I have seen wealth become more and more concentrated and the GOP borrow and spend like drunken sailors. My child will have to pay off the debt that you right wing jerks have run up on your stupid tax cuts and your g'damn wars.

It is so exciting to smell the fear of the right-wingnuts. I am from the metro St. Louis area and I can tell you here and now that Obama will win in Missouri - the crowds at the St. Louis Arch were reported as 100,000 but that is not close. The crowds were bigger than for any event I have been at - my estimate and those of people in the area are much higher. It just proves that we are sick and tired of being sick and tired and poor in this country because of the repukelicans and McLame and Pain and their supporters. Go crawl back into your caves. The party is over for you.

Sen. Barack Obama is a Muslim of Kenyan origins who studied in Islamic schools and whose campaign may have been financed by people in the Islamic and African worlds, Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi said during a recent televised national rally. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
"There are elections in America now. Along came a black citizen of Kenyan African origins, a Muslim, who had studied in an Islamic school in Indonesia. His name is Obama," said Gadhafi in little-noticed remarks he made at a rally marking the anniversary of the 1986 U.S. air raid on his country. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
The remarks, translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, MEMRI, were aired on Al Jazeera in June. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
"All the people in the Arab and Islamic world and in Africa applauded this man," continued Gadhafi. "They welcomed him and prayed for him and for his success, and they may have even been involved in legitimate contribution campaigns to enable him to win the American presidency. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….………………………………………………………………………………………………………
"We are hoping that this black man will take pride in his African and Islamic identity, and in his faith, and that [he will know] that he has rights in America, and that he will change America from evil to good, and that America will establish relations that will serve it well with other peoples, especially the Arabs," Gadhafi said.

A lot of things have been said about Barack Obama in the past, and I'm not sure I agree with all of them, but one thing is beyond question: the man is a socialist. There is no argument there. Everything in his life up to this point has involved the advancement of socialism. The problem is, the US cannot afford to have a socialist president at this time. Our country is 9 trillion dollars in debt and the last thing we can afford to do is elect a president that is promising trillions in new spending. We have to go in the opposite direction. We have to cut back on spending so we can start paying down the enormous debt. It is also unfair to saddle future generations with debt to pay for social welfare programs for people today. If we continue down the path to full socialism at this time by implementing Obama's socialist healthcare system, we will destroy any chance the nation has to balance the budget and pay down the debt. If we enact the oppressive tax increases that Obama is proposing, we will bring the economy to a screeching halt and people's retirement funds will plummet in value. We just can't afford any more socialism in America at this time.

John McCain and the GOP don't give a crap about struggling families. They never have. All they care about are the rich. Corporate welfare is perfectly fine but heaven forbid the folks that really need a tax break actually get it. Under John McCain's plan the rich will get richer and the middle-class will get the shaft, the same as they have the last 8 years. You people need to wake up.

Sen. Obama is going to write checks to people who don't pay taxes. That is welfare.

Obama gets his ideas from Carl Marx. If elected, he would be the first Marxist President of the "American Union" (like in Soviet Union).
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!

Why is it that these republicans call it socialism when the democrats merely want to shift the tax bracket back where it belongs?
Bush shifted the tax bracket, took money from the middle-class & redistributed it to the rich but you don't hear these republicans howling socialism when they do it.
So here is the republican logic Robin Hood in reverse is all American but a fair shake to the American worker is socialism.
John McCain's plan to tax the health care benefits of working Americans to drive them into the ranks of the uninsured is a prime example of his philosophy that the middle-class exist only to serve the rich therefore hard work is not rewarded.
I get so sick of the republican view that Americans have too much. The whole purpose of work is to get ahead so a person can enjoy a better standard of living but the republicans have something against that because they have a sweat shop mentality towards the American worker. Yes we are nothing but a disposable commodity so no health care is required.
After the last 8 years of destruction from republican rule it's time for a change. Vote for Obama in November.

That's reight, Obama's plan will help himself to the plumber's money and give it to hood rats!

-- implementing Obama's socialist healthcare system, we will destroy any chance the nation has to balance the budget and pay down the debt. --
You obviously don't understand, or from what you have written, care about health care in America.
Hint: Both McCain and Obamas plans will cost about the same, but Obamas will provide insurance for more americans and be more efficient in doing so.

Socialism at it's best. Come on people? Can you not see it? Obama is "resdistributing" your money.....redistributing to whom? Don't those of us who go to church give voluntarily? When Katrina hit, didn't the Country come to the aid of all of the victims? And, remember 9/11, I would imagine most of us, if not all, gave something to those who were so terribly affected? I am already taxed. I worked hard for my money. I went to college on my own, and am still paying loans on it. BUT, Obama wants to take my HARD WORKING money and redistribute it to those who do not want to work as hard as I have? Socialism is what they have in Cuba, Russia, Korea...........where the money is kept for the government, not REDISTRIBUTED to the people. As for my wife, her small business will no longer exist under his plan. She cannot afford to pay for her employee's health care, let alone survive making just a little over 250k per year. Yeah, Socialism at it's best. And if anyone has not seen this coming they are blind. Talk about the most liberal in the top seats of the Administration: Obama, Pelosi and Reid. Our Country as we know it now, will be far long gone. And we may find ourselves not being able to vote in four years. Just watch and learn how radical Obama is. His bff's are quite the true American's now, aren't they?

Wisdom - The recent $800 billion bailout plan was socialist. You do know that right? John McCain's plan to buy up people's mortgages? Yep, that's socialist too. The $250 billion plan to buy up shares in banks? That's actually communist. So this socialism you speak of is already happening and it's coming from a republican administration!!!
Posted by: JimmyTMac | Oct 18, 2008 4:25:42 PM
Wake up!!!!!!!!We are closing in on One Trillion dollars to boost this economy up in the last month alone. Do you really think thier will be any tax cut coming once anyone of these guys get into offic? Don't kid yourselves, this isn't the Nineties and we don't have the money to do the things that are being promised. We should be demanding some real answers but here we are debating tax cuts that will never happen and programs that we cannot afford start while other government programs that demand action cannot be fixed either.

McCAIN YOU AND YOUR BUDDY PHIL GRAHAM'S DEREGULATION CRASHED THE ECONOMY!
The Graham-Leach act of 1999 removed all of the regulatory protections of the Glass-Stegal Act put in place post Depression in 1932. The Glass-Steagal Act regulations stopped banks from doing exactly what they did in recent years, get to big and run wild!!!
In 2000 Phil Graham came back under George Bush and a Republican Congress and removed the rest of the regulations on financial institutions that eventually led to this entire mess!!!!
This week that earned PHIL GRAHAM an honored place on CNN's "10 worst culprits" of the current financial crisis!
I don't see Barnie Frank, Chuck Schumer or Chris Dodd on CNN's "culprits list!"
And John McCain voted against deregulation time and time again throughout his career in both the House and Senate..
There is no denying these facts and Phil Graham was/is McCain's principle economic adviser!!
CASE CLOSED!
Let's elect SMART LEADERS FOR A CHANGE! Obama/Biden '08!!
Posted by: Davis | Oct 18, 2008 4:26:37 PM
No, Doug. It might surprise you to know that college-educated people aren't guaranteed wealth. Hard-working people without even a high school diploma can make it big in America. You know? It's the American dream. It's the beauty of America. It's about to CHANGE.
