McCain: Obama Will 'Say Anything to Get Elected'

ABC News' Bret Hovell reports: John McCain told a crowd in Cincinnati Wednesday night that his rival Barack Obama will “say anything to get elected.”

“This week we learned Senator Obama is concerned that his tax plan is seen as welfare,” McCain said, talking about Obama’s plan to provide tax credits that are refundable to people who may not have any income tax liability. “So he added a work requirement. Thirteen days to go to the election and he changed his tax plan because the American people had learned the truth about it, and they didn’t like it.

“That’s another example, my friends, he’ll say anything to get elected,” McCain told the crowd.

McCain’s criticism of Obama’s tax plan has become a crucial component of his closing argument on the stump. He dedicates a lot of his stump speech now to criticizing Obama for comments he made last week when he said he was in favor of “spreading” wealth around.

But he had not, until Wednesday, said that Obama would do anything to get elected.

Please Sen. McCain, explain to us how you are going to 'fix' social security.. and be concise. Your web page does not give any indication as to what you will do. In fact, there is very little detail at all.

Come on John.. you blasted the tax plan calling it welfare. Guess that argument is gone now, so you shift the argument to.. what exactly? No more complaints, simply 'saying anything'? At least he says what he will do unlike you and your generalized vague statements.. yes we know you think you are a 'maverick', and yes you keep claiming you will bring 'change', but fail to say exactly how.. looks like the only one saying anything to get elected is you sir, and it does appear the people have noticed, and in record numbers!

Commenting on a new joint interview with John McCain and Sarah Palin, NBC News Political Director Chuck Todd described the Republican ticket as lacking cohesion, chemistry, and (he hinted) trust.

"There was a tenseness," Todd told MSNBC's Chris Matthews. "I couldn't see chemistry between John McCain and Sarah Palin. I felt as if we grabbed two people and said 'here, sit next to each other, we are going to conduct an interview.' They are not comfortable with each other, yet."

"When you see the two of them together, the chemistry is just not there. You do wonder, is John McCain starting to blame her for things? Blaming himself? Is she blaming him?" asked the widely regarded NBC newsman. "And maybe they don't feel they can win right now, so they are missing that intensity. That was the thing that struck me more than anything. You almost wonder why they wanted the two of them sitting next to each other."

The interview, Williams said, would air over the course of three days. And some actual news - beyond the body language - was drawn from the proceedings: Palin, apparently to her own staff's surprise, promised to release her medical records.

"Both of these candidates are on the verge of pulling a Bullworth," said Todd, referencing the late '90s political classic about a pol who stopped spinning. "We are at a critical juncture inside this campaign for the McCain folks and that is who is trusting who? You have got people worrying about their reputations. Now you are wondering do the candidates trust the staff? Does the staff trust the candidates? This is a dangerous time in a campaign that is behind. They desperately need some good news because you do wonder if cohesion is disappearing on the inside."

John McCains stand on Taxes - Feb. 2, 2000

JIM LEHRER: There was a suggestion today from some of Governor Bush's supporters that maybe you're not really a true blue Republican, that some of the things you support like campaign finance reform and your opposition to tax cuts are more like Gore and Bradley and Clinton and Democrats than Republican.

SEN. JOHN McCAIN: Well, I'm much more like Ronald Reagan, actually, than the present hierarchy of our party. I'm for tax cuts, but I'm for working Americans. Governor Bush wants to give 38 percent of his tax cuts to the wealthiest 1 percent. I want to give it to working families.

I'm John McCain, and I'm not sure if I approve this message.

Laughable...talk about delusional. After all the crap his campaign has thrown out there this is all he can come up with. Obama has a better plan, better VP choice, better demeanor and he's smarter. Sorry John. The gig is up.

McCain only says this to get elected.

ABC is turning into a trashy gossip magazine that is PRO OBAMA. Please for the love of God, stop your hideous attempt to sway the voters of this country into thinking McCain/Palin are doing something wrong. Obama I AM SURE does not get his clothing and accessories(nor his wife) at Walmart.

Posted by: ml | Oct 22, 2008 10:21:52 PM

He's gotta try everything at this point... Heck, he may even let Palin speak for herself again at some point without chaperoning her. I think it's sad that he can't even see why people don't think she's qualified - let alone the 'most qualified VP candidate in recent history'.

His statements today are just another introspective observation that is wrongly misdirected at Obama.

McCain will say anything and do anything to get elected.... and he proves it every day.

Most obvious was his choice of VP, who still does not know what a VP does and has no clue on what preconditions are... as per her interview with Brian Williams of NBC.

McCain put campaign first.

Then spent 150k on his Barbie/Soulmate, so she could have new clothes.

Hmmmm...and people still want him as POTUS....

Corruption lives and breaths through McCain/Palin

"Please Sen. McCain, explain to us how you are going to 'fix' social security"

I believe that his plan is to get rid of it (or at least gut it), then it won't be a problem. We'll have a problem with elderly Americans eating cat food to feed themselves, but at least Social Security won't be a problem any more.

Posted by: McCain is a liar | Oct 22, 2008 10:23:16 PM

I'll take a president any day who will listen to the American people and adjust his plans according to what we think,

vs.

a pres'dint who says "I don't listen to no one", "My decision was bold and decisive", "I' stayin' the course", and "I don't blink, cause you can't blink if you're gonna be pres'dint".

Thanks, McCain, for highlighting one of Obama's strongest points - he LISTENS!

Who is stupid enough to vote for this bastard

Posted by: jen | Oct 22, 2008 10:23:34 PM

Talk about saying anything to get elected!

How about "The democrats are sayin' some mighty mean stuff about Western Pennslyania. I couldn't agree with them more! I mean, I couldn't disagree with you more! I mean, I agree that I disagree with you! With them! Y'all are god loving god fearing people!"

Posted by: clifton | Oct 22, 2008 10:25:30 PM

THAT'S EXACTLY RIGHT ... OBAMA HAS SAID ANYTHING TO GET ELECTED.

He has an ad running that says he will spend every day that he is in the White House thinking about us, thinking about you, thinking about me???

WHAT A JOKE !! WHAT A LAUGH!!! THERE IS ONLY ONE PERSON OBAMA CARES ABOUT ... AND THAT IS BARACK OBAMA !!!!

VOTE MCCAIN/PALIN TO SEND A MESSAGE TO ACORN, CNN/MSNBC, DNC - THAT VOTER FRAUD IS NOT OK, THAT MEDIA LYING, TWISTING OF FACTS AND MEDIA BIASENESS IS NOT OK AND THAT A GOVERNMENT RUN BY OBAMA, PELOSI AND REID IS NOT OK ...

DO YOU THINK THAT OBAMA GETS HIS SUITS, SHOES, TIES AND CRISP WHITE SHIRTS AT WALMART????

"Michelle has asked me to clean up because when she met me I had one suit. Michelle always finds this funny, because I basically buy five of the same suit and then I patch them up and wear them repeatedly. I have four pairs of shoes. Recently I've taken to getting a hair cut more frequently than I used to, because my mother-in-law makes fun of me. I don't think people are too worried about what I'm wearing."
