Palin Dismisses Media, Appeals to 'Joe Six-Pack'

ABC News' Imtiyaz Delawala Reports: Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin dismissed the media's coverage of her candidacy, saying she'll represent the "Joe Six-Pack American" as vice president, and that she and her family understand the challenges facing middle-class Americans under the current financial crisis.

In a radio interview with conservative blogger and columnist Hugh Hewitt, Palin says she’s not concerned by criticisms of her performance in recent network interviews with ABC's Charles Gibson and CBS' Katie Couric, which many -- including some former conservative supporters -- have said showed her unprepared to be vice president.

"Oh, I think they're just not used to someone coming in from the outside saying you know what? It's time that normal Joe six-pack American is finally represented in the position of vice presidency, and I think that that's kind of taken some people off guard, and they’re out of sorts, and they’re ticked off about it," Palin told Hewitt.

Palin, who has complained this week about “gotcha journalism” on the campaign trail, told Hewitt that she invites the scrutiny, and that her recent media appearances have helped her better articulate her positions and prepare for her upcoming vice presidential debate with Sen. Joe Biden on Thursday.

“I have a degree in journalism also, so it surprises me that so much has changed since I received my education in journalistic ethics all those years ago,” Palin said when asked by Hewitt whether the Gibson and Couric interviews felt like “pop quizzes designed to embarrass” her. "I’m going to take those shots and those pop quizzes and just say that’s okay, those are good testing grounds. That makes somebody work even harder. It makes somebody be even clearer and more articulate in their positions. So really I don’t fight it. I invite it.”

In an interview Monday with Couric in Columbus, Palin says she has appreciation for the press. But when asked by Couric several times which specific newspapers she reads, she did not name any, saying instead that she reads “all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.”

“I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too. Alaska isn’t a foreign country, where it’s kind of suggested, ‘Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?’ Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America.”

Palin told Hewitt that her family’s experience in Alaska helps her relate to the lives of working-class Americans, and that she and her husband Todd understand directly the impact of the current financial crisis.

“Even today, Todd and I are looking at what’s going on in the stock market, the relatively low number of investments that we have, looking at the hit that we’re taking, probably $20,000 dollars last week in his 401K plan that was hit,” Palin told Hewitt. “I’m thinking geez, the rest of America, they’re facing the exact same thing that we are. We understand what the problems are.”

“We’re putting a lot of faith in other people who are using our money as investments. We have to count on the federal government to be overseeing these agencies and entities, making sure that we’re not going to get screwed on this deal, and that our savings are safe,” Palin added of Washington’s attempts to address the financial crisis.

I agree with Paul Newman that the media skews their reports. He once said that if an interviewer asked "would you beat your wife?" and he answered "no", the headline would read "Newman DENIES beating wife." Thereby indicating that it was a denial of an actual event, rather than a rhetorical question, responded to. I do not trust anything they say!

What an idiot - we don't need "joe six-pack" as VP and potentially P - we need EXCEPTIONAL individuals, female or male.

Our founding fathers (and mothers) weren't "average" people - they were huge thinkers and incredibly brave.

Anyone who buys into Flailin's philosophy should have their voter registration card revoked immediately.

To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen, "I AM a Joe Six Pack American, and Sarah Palin, you are NO Joe Six Pack American candidate". Now begone!

Crisis shows what makes a candidate great

The bottom line: McCain was right last week when he said the rescue plan was
on course for failure. Had Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi paid more attention to McCain’s warning, heeded his
call for a greater bipartisan spirit and acted on that advice instead of
accusing him of political grandstanding, the headlines in today’s paper
might have been different. At the last minute it was Pelosi, not McCain, who
waved the partisan red flag in a speech prior to Monday’s vote. That likely
doomed the Paulson plan by alienating the GOP ballots Pelosi needed to pass
the bill since she didn’t have enough Democratic votes lined up.

McCain’s astute sizing up of the situation in Washington was just the latest
example of a politician not known for expertise in economic matters proven
to be right at key times on fiscal issues.

Ok, so asking her what type of newspaper she reads was a question meant to trap her? God help us all if this woman comes close to any position at the white house. We will continue to be the laughing stock for the rest of the world.

This women just cant stop lying. She is so fake!!! As a republican it scares me to think this women may one day be the president of the United states. Now she has a degree in Journalism, give me a break!! The issues here is when they ask you a question with out preparation and you dont know what to say thatn that tells me that you just dont undestand. I really belive that this women is not smart at all. She talks about how when she was the major of a small town in wassila she left a sur-plus but when the TIMES investigated she actually left the town in a huge deficit. She stated that she told gongress thanks but no thanks to the bridge to nowhere, another lie she actually fought hard to get the bridge and then decided not to supported and on top of it all she kept the money. What a joke

Good god... so she's really going to go a-pandering to Joe Sixpack?

In my opinion, Joe drinks too much.

God help us.

"Joe Six-pack" is one of those condescending, stereotypical media terms for the average man (and woman). Actually, it is symptomatic of the intellectual atrophy that affects so much of the media today. It is too bad, and a sad comment on our educational system, that the media has to cultivate this type of "thinking". Especially in view of the fact that they are supposed to play a role in advancing the educational and intellectual level of the general public. I wonder if schools still use "The Weekly Reader" in classrooms, and if so, I wonder if it is now in politically-correct cartoon form. I also find it very depressing to learn that the Simpsons and similar shows have become such TV mainstays, and that they are tacitly being held up as right and proper role models for the youth of today.

Call me old-fashioned, or just call me old (and obsolete), but I do think Newton Minnow was right when he described the world of television as being a 'vast wasteland'. Unfortunately, the phenomenon that was only in its incipient stage back then, has now reached epidemic proportions. And soon we will be FORCED to watch all this nonsense in High Definition. I fear for the upcoming generations.

Is there a solution? Yes, tune out or get rid of your TV. Read serious books and start to do your own thinking. Don't waste your time, like I am now, posting to idiots on Blogs. As it is said, "Never try to teach a pig to sing ... it wastes your time and annoys the pig". And no, I am not using the word 'pig' as Sen. Obama did.

Lemmings for Obama.

Nobama '08

P.S. - There's nothing wrong with having a six-pack around, as long as it is not alcoholic, and is recyclable. I would hope that the used bottles would then actually be recycled.

Yup Paul was not a HOLLYWEIRD! He is and was an endangered species!

The media deserves blasting. I have no faith in anything they say anymore. I never never thought Fox news would be the most balanced network out there. How can this be? Unbiased reporting is dead...

The media is a disgrace to themselves. It isn't news when Joe Bidden doesn't know his presidents (my 5th grader does) and he is touted as a great intellect. What an idiot and Obama gets one softball after another. The media elite believe that they are better than the average american and seek every opportunity to belittle the average person for their egos. Fortunitely, some of us that live in fly over country are not as stupid as they need us to be.

Last thing I want is the average "Joe" running the White House! I want the smartest, most professional, internationally and economically aware person doing that job.

I also read where Couric asked Palin what magazines and newspapers she liked to read and she refused to answer the question. She reads nothing???

Here come the hit pieces! ABC is just warming up so that tomorrow night they can show their undivided support for the messiah's prophet.

Right on Yavo!
Shut the crap off...........TV off here.

Palin wants us to believe she's just like the average Joe, huh? Not even close. For one major difference, the average Joe would NOT have accepted the VP nod. We would have known we were not qualified (remember her asking what a veep does all day?). Nor would we had thrown our families into the national spotlight, especially with such limited prior exposure. I feel bad for her kids AND their friends.

We already have someone who claimed to represent Joe Six-Pack American in the White House: George W. Bush.

And we've all seen how that went. Somehow, he manages to be more qualified than Palin. Sarah as President, or even as Vice President, would be an absolute disaster!

This Biden-Palin debate is going to be a debacle. The moderator is currently writing a PRO-OBAMA book to be released in January.

All those who refuse to acknowledge that the media is slanted heavily to the left are either ignorant or in denial.

Posted by: mike | Oct 1, 2008 9:21:57 AM

Senator Biden can't make her look bad. sarah's done that on numerous occasions all by herself. All women won't get mad at Biden for debating better on Thursday. He won't be able to help it. sarah can win with the uneducated. Thinking, intelligent people are insulted by her. You don't have to even listen to the media's take on her. Just listen to her. America deserves the best possible people to run DC. McCain doesn't care about anything or anyone but winning the prize of the Oval Office. Send him back to AZ.

This is as sick as it comes. I don't think she if faking it at all. She has gotten so much media attention and now they want to whine when she hasn't been able to fool the entire world - this is not Alaska! Way out of her league.. but I must say she is very confident in herself because she has gotten away with this pretending to be something she is not far toooo long.
