Palin Distorts Biden's Clean Coal Position

ABC News' Imtiyaz Delawala and Matt Jaffe report:  Gov. Sarah Palin distorted rival vice presidential candidate Sen. Joe Biden's position on clean coal technology in his hometown of Scranton, Pa., today, inaccurately charging that Biden has said "there's no such thing as clean coal," while continuing to question Biden's support for the use of the technology in the United States.

At a rally in Scranton today -- at the same location that Biden had campaigned with Sen. Hillary Clinton and President Bill Clinton on Sunday -- Palin spoke extensively about clean coal technology, a critical issue in a region searching for new sources of employment in a struggling economy. Clean coal technology refers to removing impurities and carbon dioxide gases from coal to make its mining more environmentally friendly -- a still unproven technology that may have the potential to create new jobs as the U.S. seeks to reduce dependence on foreign sources of energy.

"So whether Joe Biden approves it or not, John McCain is going to develop clean coal technology here in America, and we’ll be looking to the good people of Pennsylvania to help us meet that goal," Palin said to strong applause and chants, of "Sarah, Sarah" from the crowd. "Our plan for clean coal is gonna create over 30,000 new jobs where they're needed most -- places like Ohio and West Virginia, and right here in Pennsylvania.”

"Now Joe Biden has said that there's no such thing as clean coal, when we talk about clean coal technology that's needed," Palin said, drawing strong boos from the crowd. "He said as a matter of fact that, even if there were clean coal that in an Obama administration it would be fine if say China used it but it wouldn’t be used here at home. Now that's nonsense."

Palin was referring to comments that Biden made in Maumee, Ohio, in September when the Democratic vice presidential candidate was asked while shaking hands with supporters why he supported clean coal, when wind and solar power are available.

"We're not supporting clean coal," Biden said. "Guess what? China is building two every week, two dirty coal plants. And it's polluting the United States, it's causing people to die ... China's gonna burn 300 years of bad coal unless we figure out how to clean their coal up because it's gonna ruin your lungs and there's nothing we can do about it."

"No coal plants here in America!" Biden continued. "Build 'em, if they're gonna build 'em, over there and make 'em clean because they're killing ya."

Biden was criticized for the comments given their inconsistency with his past statements on the issue, as well as the stated position of his running mate Sen. Barack Obama in support of clean coal technology. Biden, however, has never said that clean coal technology does not exist. And at the vice presidential debate between Biden and Palin earlier this month, Biden attempted to clarify his position in support of the technology.

“My record for 25 years has supported clean coal technology," Biden said. "A comment made in a rope line was taken out of context. I was talking about exporting that technology to China so when they burn their dirty coal, it won’t be as dirty, it will be clean.”

In St. Clairsville, Ohio, today, Biden again touted his support for clean coal technology.

“This is not rocket-science,” Biden said. “Coal, coal is part of our energy future, man. We have enormous reserves. Right now every single week in China they build a dirty coal plant that pollutes the West Coast of the United States of America and the environment. We can provide clean coal technology, not only exporting that technology and our coal, we can sell that technology, creating jobs to China, to India."

"This should be a win-win for us, if we just get off, off of being so beholden to big oil," Biden added.

Have you seen how many conservatives have jumped ship in part because of the Palin pick? Very irresponsible on the part of McCain...

Palin is distorted.

jhw539 - You've got to be kidding.

What would be the difference between having Sarah Palin and any hardline right-wing, uneducated hillbilly in the White House? All of the attributes (aside from the physical ones) that have won you people over are characteristics most commonly associated with males. Do tell.

Oh, please. Gimme a break. Palin twists and distorts the facts to get the people riled up.
I hope people will have the sense to do their own research for the truth and not just accept what is told to them.
I would not follow that woman anywhere.
I am all for a woman president, but absolutely not Palin. She is unethical, a liar, stupid, and a moose killer.

Foreign aid is in excess of 700 billion dollars. Wake Up to Government Deceptions.

You know nothing about the Middle East and what it is all about. Israel can better do what the US cannot in the Middle East. OIL is the problem and nothing else. You are spending American blood for OIL. You are ignorance to the real issue.

HEADLINE: Palin Lies Again

QUESTION: Is this still newsworthy?

Wednesday, September 24 on ABC News Blogs:

One more credit to Joe Biden from his own words: There will be NO CLEAN COAL PLANTS in America. Joe Biden proves repeatedly that he and Obama are out of touch with the real world.

This is very funny, all of a sudden the republican ticket can find jobs for people, what the hell have they been doing for the past eight years, go to hell McCain/Palin, and that hockey mom can put lipstick on my butt, morons!!!!

Posted by: pete | Oct 14, 2008 11:35:27 PM

jhw539 - you may be correct. This election is probably completely irrelevant to the cabal that's really running the show - Council on Foreign Relations, PNAC, etc.

Dare to scrape the surface.

You know, it's Palin who is distorted.

The squat brick buildings of Grove Parc Plaza, in a dense neighborhood that Barack Obama represented for eight years as a state senator, hold 504 apartments subsidized by the federal government for people who cannot afford to live anywhere else. However, it is not safe to live here. It is an Obama failure of the worse kind. This is an Obama program.

Obama said he can do more than one thing at a time. Obama cannot properly represent voters in his Illinois district. Here is a sample of the representation Obama will give all American voters. This is what happens to Obama projects.

Palin couldn't answer the question, "What publications do you read?"

That's enough for me! It isn't exactly a "got-cha" question, and nobody should have to talk circles around it!

McCain disqualified himself when he picked her for VP. I don't want her ANYWHERE near the presidency!

Posted by: Donna Hughes | Oct 14, 2008 11:43:45 PM

Independent Voter - Is it really Obama's fault that it's not safe to live there - that the place has fallen into disrepair? My God, how fantastic that he took the initiative to have this (very necessary) housing built!

It's called a hand up. An opportunity. Not a lifetime of being taken care of. At some point you turn it over to those to whom it belongs.

To Independent Voter,

1% of 301,139,947 is not 3011, it is approx 3,000,000. That was on initial glance. I am not sure how you made up these other figures. but perhaps you should go back to school and learn math before people start calling you McCain.

Looks like Alaska is in much better shape under Governor Sarah Palin than Illinois residents are under Senator Barack Obama’s housing plans.

Obama’s housing support:

Palin’s housing support:

I would much rather live in Alaska. All Obama supporters to Illinois under Obama’s housing programs.

I'm reading AYer's "A kind and just parent" and it reads just like "Dreams."

Gee what a coincidence that so many of you right-wingers all happen to be reading a book by William Ayers all at the exact same time and all having the same reaction to it.........
Could it be that none of you know a blessed thing about either Williams or Obamas book and that you are simply regurgitating what you have heard somebody else tell you????????

I mean we've learned that Sarah Palin reads her Starbucks cups.
