Palin's Switcheroo on Feminism
October 24, 2008 7:07 AM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Does Sarah Palin consider herself a feminist? It depends who is asking the question.
In an interview on NBC Nightly News that aired Thursday, Brian Williams asked Palin: "Governor, are you a feminist?"
"I'm not gonna label myself anything, Brian," said Palin. "And I think that's what annoys a lot of Americans, especially in a political campaign, is to start trying to label different parts of America different, different backgrounds, different . . . I'm not going to put a label on myself."
While Palin refused to label herself anything while talking to NBC News, she proudly donned the feminist mantle during a recent interview with CBS News.
During her interview with CBS News' Katie Couric, Palin was asked, "Do you consider yourself a feminist?"
"I do," said Palin. " I'm a feminist who believes in equal rights and I believe that women certainly today have every opportunity that a man has to succeed, and to try to do it all, anyway."

Gee, so you won't give press conferences, the campaign is hiding you from answering any kind of meaningful questions, and you refuse to state where you stand on issues that most women would like to know, and yet you want us to vote for you based on what, your looks?
What an insult to America.

And now she thinks shes beeing treated 'unfair' by the press because she shopped clothes for $ 150 000 and refers to Hillary.
Except that Palin called Hillary a whiner during the primaries. What a f*** ing hypocrite.

Interesting that she considers herself a feminist when it suits her - like when she's being interviewed by a female reporter. Meanwhile, her runningmate and her party do NOT believe in equal pay for women, do not protect women's rights on a whole host of issues. And Palin's comments about her 150,000 wardrobe are sickening in their duplicity. The attacks are because she's female?!?! No, they're because 150,000 is more money on clothes than any hockey mom will spend in her ENTIRE LIFE. Palin went on to say that the clothes were not worth 150,000. Really? That's not what the receipts say, you lying twit.
One last point. This ridiculously uninformed woman has not hesitated to attack Biden and Obama at every opportunity - in the most sarcastic ways. How much have the attacked you, Palin? Or have they been respectful and courteous in their references to you? Has Obama said you're wildly unqualified? It's what you've said about him? Has Biden said you say incredibly stupid things in interviews? It's what you've said about him. CHARACTER MATTERS, PALIN. I thought as a good christian you'd know this.

jon in maryland - you are so right. And she would never be recognized by her 'Christian' behavior (because being snide and nasty isn't 'Christian' - I don't know... maybe it's Jewish? Muslim? It's so offensive that people like her use that term to mean 'good' anyway.) I don't fault her $150,000 wardrobe. Not that I buy those kinds of clothes, but they are very well made and stand up to a lot of abuse, yet remain 'photographable'. And the shoes - having never spent much on shoes I DO know that if you have to stand in them for a long period of time some of the $$$ designers craft a pretty comfortable high heel. (I'll stick to my Keens, though!) So on the important stuff - femminism, etc., she a fake, a liar and 'the mean girl' from high school. She said a lot of nasty things about Hillary, yet now will use her as an ally when she's trying to woo the Hillary base. She should just go shoot things from a helicopter and leave us in the lower 48 (the REAL Amercia, Sarah?) alone.

A feminist is simply someone who believes that women should have the same opportunities as men and be treated as equals. That means Palin is.
For other women and organisations like the NOW to say she does harm to femininists' cause just because she doesn't share their views on religion or abortion is madness. They are the ones who are hurting feminism by trying to couple it with their personal views on other issues.

I'm as concerned about Palin being four more years of Cheney as I am about McCain being four more years of Bush policies. Cheney has hidden behind a wall of secrecy, from his energy meetings, saber rattling with Iran, protection from any misconduct (executive or legislative; you can't be both) and his constant lie about Iraq being associated with Al quada. Palin is in a 'bubble' and is already yielding power by denial, changing her position and attacking while shamelessly accepting every inappropriate form of public funds available.

Palin has fallen into the trap of being thrust onto the national scene while being woefully unprepared. Put Hillary Clinton in her position and the questions would receive answers (whether one agreed with the answer or not)and the major issues would be broached. Thanks, McCain. Due to your poor decision-making we all have to suffer this public debacle ... until Nov. 4th when we can wish you "farewell".

I can't wait until after 11.4.08 which Palin can go back to Alaska. She's a disgrace to women everywhere. The evilness that is coming out of the RNC is just appalling. An RNC opinion poll called me last night to see if they could 'count on my vote' - I said HELL NO!
Posted by: Sick of it all | Oct 24, 2008 7:44:54 AM
I had not thought ridiculous questions like these were part of being a candidate. Why not ask ;thongs or standard?
Looks like you guys could go after what a candidate really thinks; Mr. Obama, is redistribution really just another term for a politician taking money from someone else to spend on his or her "pet projects"?
Ms. Palin, now that oil prices are dropping what will Alaska do for revenue and what will you do when oil field workers have no jobs.
Joe, what did you mean when you said that the US would be tested within 6 months of an Obama administration and that your response to that crisis would not be popular.
Mr.McCain, why did you oppose President Bush's tax cuts in 2000 but now embrace them?
And there are more: what would you do to keep 25% of kids from dropping out of school? Why is the 35 to 40% of a middle income earners pay check not enough to fund the Government? If a windfall tax on companies is in order, how will you help them when they lose money? Will you investigate members of your own party for their roles in the mortgage scandals? Why did you take money for your campaign from XYZ company? If you haven't released health and school records , will you? What are your previous successes and failures?
See, there are many questions you could ask but don't.
Why?

Ok so now shes not a feminist, because her boss the misogynist is sitting beside her. Before when it was just her and the girls she was a feminist. Flipper! And isnt it interesting she isnt so much into labels now, and even mentioned that "parts of the country" shouldnt recieve labels, but it wasnt long ago that she was calling "parts of the country" pro american?
Posted by: mitch | Oct 24, 2008 7:47:28 AM
By any rational definition of the word 'feminist', she is one by her accomplishments rather than by the mere rhetoric of most self-labeled feminists.

I see Sarah Palin as an anti-femminist, an example of an unqualified woman who was chosen, in part, because she was a woman. To me, the great tragedy of this election is that John McCain passed over all the truly qualified GOP women and chose Sarah Palin.

Did she actually say "I'm not gonna label myself anything...” Please explain the maverick and reformer labels, not to mention Pro-America, Anti-America and the “Socialist” title you labeled the Democratic Candidate? Where’s an easy button when you need one…
Posted by: Martin | Oct 24, 2008 7:51:56 AM
Jill.. the 'socialist' thing was last week, this week it's 'just like bush'.. guess you missed that memo.
Posted by: Concerned American | Oct 24, 2008 7:52:24 AM
Someone refresh my memory: Has anyone asked any of the other candidates if they're feminists?
Posted by: CarolStrick | Oct 24, 2008 7:53:13 AM
Obama is more of a feminist than the moose hunter! He has fought for equal rights all his adult life. this woman is a pathetic joke and most likely won't have a job when she goes back to alaska in november.

Caribou Barbie should be investigated for child abuse. No infant should be used as a prop at politcal rallies, especially late at night. Feminist? She should look up what it means to be a responsible mother.

who really cares
Posted by: tina | Oct 24, 2008 7:56:51 AM
Palin is an extravagant out of touch woman. She is using the tax payers 84million dollars wrongly and against the constitution. She is out of touch and extravagant.
