Phils Fan Biden Avoids World Series Mention in Heart of Rays Territory
October 27, 2008 9:34 PM
ABC News' Matthew Jaffe Reports: Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., would love to see the Philadelphia Phillies clinch their first World Series title in 28 years with a Game 5 win Monday night over the Tampa Bay Rays. Of course, he would also love to see the Democratic ticket win the White House on November 4. So it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Biden avoided any mention of baseball in an evening event just outside Tampa, near the crucial I-4 corridor in this hotly-contested battleground state.
With Biden's rally in New Port Richey set to begin at 7:30pm, an hour before first pitch in Philly, the Delaware lawmaker started his speech early, delivered a brisk 18-minute address, worked the ropeline, and then boarded his bus just moments before Phillies' hurler Cole Hamels got the Rays' Akinori Iwamura to fly out to open the game.
Sen. Biden, his son Hunter, his colleague Sen. Bill Nelson, D-FL, and Nelson's wife Grace, are now watching the ballgame as Biden's motorcade makes the hour-and-a-half trek north to Ocala.
Biden's wife Jill and their granddaughter Maisy are attending the game at Citizens Bank Park.
"I’m gonna be straight up with you, I’m a Phillies fan," Biden said October 13 in Manchester, NH, to a crowd full of Boston Red Sox fans. "And lemme tell ya what I’m hoping for, I’m hoping for a Phillies-Red Sox World Series."
But the Rays defeated the Sox in seven games, only for Tampa now to be trailing Philly by three games to one.
Should the Fightin' Phils close out the Rays Monday night in the City of Brotherly Love, it would be the first title since 1980 for sports' losingest franchise.
The senator has two more events Tuesday in the Sunshine State, starting with a morning rally in Ocala.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is very critical of U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama’s positions on Iran, according to reports that have reached Israel’s government.
Sarkozy has made his criticisms only in closed forums in France. But according to a senior Israeli government source, the reports reaching Israel indicate that Sarkozy views the Democratic candidate’s stance on Iran as “utterly immature” and comprised of “formulations empty of all content.”
Obama visited Paris in July, and the Iranian issue was at the heart of his meeting with Sarkozy. At a joint press conference afterward, Obama urged Iran to accept the West’s proposal on its nuclear program, saying that Iran was creating a serious situation that endangered both Israel and the West. According to the reports reaching Israel, Sarkozy told Obama at that meeting that if the new American president elected in November changed his country’s policy toward Iran, that would be “very problematic.”
