Pre-Rally Speakers Invoke Obama’s Middle Name

ABC News' Imtiyaz Delawala reports: Two pre-rally speakers in the last three days have invoked Sen. Barack Obama’s middle name “Hussein” in their warm-up speeches at McCain and Palin events, prompting the campaign to distance themselves from the remarks.

At a pre-rally speech in Bethlehem, PA today, Lehigh County GOP Chairman Bill Platt referred to the Democratic presidential candidate twice by his full name, Barack Hussein Obama. Critics charge that such references wrongly imply that Obama is Muslim, when he is in fact a practicing Christian. While Hussein is a traditional Arabic name, Obama was named after his Kenyan father who shared the same name.

The McCain campaign sought to immediately distance themselves from the remarks today, which were made well before Sen. John McCain and his running mate Gov. Sarah Palin had arrived at the event.

As McCain spoke to the crowd of thousands at the indoor rally, the McCain campaign released a statement, saying. “We do not condone this inappropriate rhetoric which distracts from the real questions of judgment, character, and experience that voters will base their decisions on this November."

In a pre-rally speech on Monday in Estero, Florida, Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott also referred to Obama by his middle name, telling the crowd of nearly 9,000 Palin supporters, “On Nov. 4, let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened,” prompting loud cheers from the crowd as Scott walked off stage. Scott’s remarks came as part of a string of warm-up speeches while Palin attended a private fundraiser in nearby Naples, FL, over an hour before she had arrived at the event site.

According to the Fort Meyers News-Press, an investigation has now been opened into whether Scott violated the Hatch Act by engaging in political activity while on duty and in uniform. The local ACLU and NAACP chapters have also asked for an apology.

Scott, who became sheriff in 2005 and is currently up for reelection, says he does not regret his remarks. “I absolutely, unequivocally don’t regret saying it,” Scott told the News-Press on Monday. “In order to be a speaker at this event, I had to give my full name — Michael Joseph Scott — to the Secret Service, even though I’m the sheriff of Lee County. So why would I apologize? Is there some kind of double standard here where I have to give my full name, but I can’t use his?”

“Unless he changed his name, my position hasn’t changed,” said Scott of Obama. “It seems very clear to me that people have one of three stances on this thing: There are those who dislike it, there are those who like it, and there are those who think it’s a whole big deal about nothing, which is where I stand.”

You can call Barack whatever name you want. But on November 5th, you can call John McCain "Toast".

Here we go again with this "terrorist" Ayers.

Let me ask you stupid republicans a question. If Ayers was a terrorist, why isn't he in jail? Why was he never charged with terrorism? Why is he just a regular guy, working as a college professor, when terrorism carries a life sentence?

Could it be because he's not a terrorist, just a guy who opposed the vietnam war at a time when America had pretty well God Damned itself by drafting our young men to go die in a presiden't stupid war?

Ayers is no terrorist. Yet all you stupid republicanbots believe it's so just because McWar and McFailin' say so at rallies.

America is God Damned... but only for 4 more weeks.

Hillary had already warned us of the subprime morgage mess. But she also warned us about Obama. Shame on you Mr. Obama.

I find it hard to believe that McCain doesn't approve this considering it didn't start happening until he started his Obama-is-un-American advertising push

Between McCain's "Holy Rollers" and Obama's "Red Brigades" could somebody wake me when this is OVER! I'm tired of the childish babbling on here. No wonder you folks need a "leader" to tell you what to do. I thought once one reached the age of reason they didn't need a mommy or big brother anymore. Sadly some folks just can't make it unless somebody they don't even know tells them what they think or what to do. Tragic.

I was more offended that McCain referred to me as a prisoner today. "My fellow prisoners".. LOL!

While everyone is talking about President Obama's middle name, has anyone checked out the American deaths in Iraq for the past 3 months:

July - 13 US soldiers killed
August - 23 US soldiers killed
September - 25 US soldiers killed

Violence is inreasing in Iraq. The surge FAILED. Not politically correct to say so, but a fact none the less.

But let's get back to President Obama's middle name, because that's what we republicans must focus on.

You know, if Obama is sworn in as President, will he not take the oath by saying his name in full? He had so many years to get rid of his name. It shows that he is very proud of his heritage -- whatever that might be. One point to note also is, according to the Islamic religion, if you are born into a Muslim family, you are a Muslim and cannot be "born again" into some other religion.

Obama/Biden vs McCain/Palin, what if things were switched around?.....think about it.
Would the country's collective point of view be different?
Ponder the following:
What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage, including
a three month old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?
What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review?
What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a divorcee?

What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after a severe
disfiguring car accident, when she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while
he was still married?

What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain
killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?

What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five?
(The Keating Five were five United States Se nators accused of corruption
in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings
and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)

What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?
What if Obama couldn't read from a teleprompter?

What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included
disc ipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes?

What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many
occasions, a serious anger management problem?

What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer distribution?

What if the Obamas had adopted a white child?

You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected reality,
do you really believe the election numbers would b e as close as they are?

This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes
positive qua lities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in
another when there is a color difference.

Lehigh County GOP Chairman Bill Platt's use of the word Hussain on Barack Obama is an indication of someone who is primitive in the 21 century in the US. No matter how many times Obama and his surroggates say, he is no Muslem, people see him as a Christian, Platt's use of the name Hussain to potray Obama as a Muslem is ignorant and primitive. He may say this is politics, but never mind. His ideology matters. No wonder why McCain is loosing because he is surrounded by people like Platt.

The DNC and liberal media are the ones who don't want Obama's middle name spoken. Names have meanings especially in certain parts of the world. In America, Hussein strikes a certain cord. Certainly not Obama's fault, but still it's his name and if he becomes President as he lays his right hand on the Koran, I mean the Bible, he will have to recite his full name as he is sworn in. Will "journalists" cry foul then and imply that our country's oath of service is somehow racist?

Jane wrote - "according to the Islamic religion, if you are born into a Muslim family, you are a Muslim and cannot be "born again" into some other religion."

Hey Jane - according to the United States Constitution, if you are born in America, you are born into a country whose Constitution requires separation of church and state, and which states as illegal discrimination based on religion.

Not sure what country you think you live in, but this is America. Whatever confederate nation of racist bigotry you are from, go back there.

The day we swear in a president whose middle name, Hussein, cannot be spoken for fear of reprisals, is the day that America the beautiful, land of the free and home of the brave will cease to exist. May the Good Lord have mercy on our souls!

There is nothing wrong with the name Hussein. It means "blessed". Only you racist bigots who do not realize we have more allies in the Muslim world that enemies make fun of it. Do you nut cases realize that 1 billion people are Muslim around the world.

BUT THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE BARACK!

But what if it did, SO WHAT!

Have you forgot there was a King Hussein of Jordan who was a friend of Israel and negotiated a peace agreement with them. He was the father of the current king Abdullah, an incredible smart and energetic young leader in the Muslim world, and pro-American.

So get real and stop the attacks on his middle name.

I think it's absolutely dispicable that a peace officer would so blatenly lie about his motives.Palin encourages it and McCain hides behind her skirt. The sheriff used Barack's middle name to invoke a negative response from the audience. Does he really think the American people are that stupid? Does he shave his head or is he just naturally a skinhead? Maybe he should cover that shine up with a big white sheet.

Posted by: Bea | Oct 8, 2008 11:31:28 PM

There's nothing wrong with using his full name if your intent is pure. The intent of these speakers is to fire up a crowd's xenophobic and partisan tendencies.
