Stephanopoulos: VP Debate Report Card
October 03, 2008 12:33 AM
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos reports: During their debate tonight in St. Louis, Mo., both vice presidential candidates Republican Sarah Palin and Democrat Joe Biden carefully stuck to their strategies and did very well with the strategies they had.
This was a substantive, civil, passionate and pointed debate. Neither candidate fed into the stereotypes about themselves.
Strategy:
Biden A
Palin A-
Biden came in ready to debate Republican presidential candidate John McCain tonight, not Palin. He repeatedly attempted to portray McCain as a continuation of George W. Bush's presidency. That is the fundamental strategy of the Obama campaign and Biden did it in every single answer tonight. Biden was coherent and consistent.
Palin also did well on strategy. She showed she could handle the debate questions, and hewed to her strategy of portraying herself as a Washington outsider who in her own words could "connect with the heartland." She aggressively attempted to paint Obama as a liberal and tried to drive a wedge between Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and Biden on the issue of Iraq.
But Biden gets the edge here because if McCain can't convince voters he's taking the country in a different direction than President Bush, he cannot win this race -- and that's the case Biden made effectively tonight.
Style:
Biden A-
Palin A
From the minute Palin walked onstage and said, "Nice to meet you, Joe -- can I call you Joe?" she had her performance down. It was very winning and very appealing and we saw that throughout the debate. She also tried to wink to the audience about four or five times and you got the sense that she really was connecting with the people back home.
Biden had a more just-the-facts style. But the majority of the voters in the country agree with him over Palin on key issues. At one point the Delaware senator appeared to get emotional when talking about his children -- a key reminder his son, Beau Biden is going to Iraq. When Palin misidentified Army Gen. David D. McKiernan, commander of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, as "McClellan" Biden bit his tongue -- a gentlemanly move.
Accuracy:
Biden B
Palin B
Both made some misstatements. When Biden argued Obama never said that he'd meet with the president of Iran, he was wrong there. When Biden said that McCain had voted exactly the same way as Obama on a tax vote -- that was false. Palin inaccurately claimed Obama had voted to increase taxes 94 times. She also erroneously claimed that under Obama, the government would take over health care.
Overall, Palin didn't freeze or make any major mistakes. She talked about herself more than Biden talked about himself, likely to reassure voters who don't know much about the first-term Alaska governor. For his part, Biden didn't go on too long and was never boorish.
But they were each playing a very different political game in this debate. Palin seemed to be speaking directly to the people back at home in Alaska, a key strategy that could win her support among blue collar voters. But she was careful not to answer the charges Biden was making against Bush or McCain.
My gut tells me there will be a partisan response to this debate with Democrats arguing Biden won, and Republicans reassured by Palin's performance. However there was nothing to this debate that is likely to change the trajectory of the race.

Senator Hillary Clinton issued a statement praising Bidens performance.
(CNN) — Hillary Clinton issued a statement shortly after the debate praising Joe Biden's performance:
“Tonight's debate underscored the stark choice American families face in this election," she said. “I've known Senator Biden a long time – as Americans saw tonight, he is a strong, passionate and experienced leader. Like Barack Obama, Joe Biden understands both the economic stresses here at home and the strategic challenges in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world.
“We saw yet again that Senator McCain and Sarah Palin will offer only more of the same failed policies of the Bush Administration. America's hardworking Middle Class families deserve better.”

Joe Biden carried this debate, without question! He was articulate , knowledgeable, assertive, well reasoned and well spoken. He made his points clearly and convincingly. He reminded me why his ticket is the better choice for the country. He showed me, without question that he would be an excellent and effective Vice president, an asset to an Obama administration and to the American people, and ready to serve as president if the need arose. Sen. Biden , it is great to finally get to hear you debate.

George,
Your rating is biased and lopsided. As an independent looking for the best candidate to put my future in his/her hands, I overwhelmingly choose Joe Biden in terms of Style, Panache, Content and Delivery by tons of miles. It couldn't be better. After watching this debate, I plan to vote for Obama just because of Biden.

I agree Sarah lost big time. As a republican I proudly cast my vote for Obama/Biden. I rally connected with Biden. He is a regular with high morals. I was not aware that he wrote the Bill DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ACT AGAIST WOMEN-WOW!!!! I also liked the fact the he got emotional after he talked about his kids. What a nice guy!!!

Sen. Biden finally put to rest the claim that McCain is a Maverick. If is such a maverick, why doesn't he run as an independent?

Yeah, girlyman Biden always seems to get choked up (he's cried on camera three times and once with tissues). Can you imagine if Gov. Palin expressed emotion? He brought up his dead wife and two boys story again and it had no relevance...but funny how he could go to work and leave those two boys with nannies, while Palin gets reamed about her family circumstances when she has teenage daughters, mother and father, and two sisters and a hands on dad....BUT GETS BLASTED. Liberal double standard.....Party of Tolerance...NOT!
Palin rocked it with Main Street....she is the breath of fresh political air that we need in Washington.
McCAIN/PALIN ALL THE WAY!

Sarah should never had said this on her debate tonight!!!!
THOSE THAT DON’T LEARN FROM THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT IT!” Sarah-
Well we know who not to vote for!!!
As an independent I saw nothing great about Sarah,in fact I will now vote for Obama/Biden

The longer the night went, the drier Palin's shallow pool of talking points seemed to get. For 30 minutes she did OK, by 45 minutes the rambling started , at 60 .... my o' my. This is not a reality show people, one of these two people could be our President in the very near future. Who would you trust with the safety and wellbeing of your family in a crisis, foreign and/or domestic? Joe Biden so obviously gets it and can actually help govern in the "real world." Do the right thing and quit flirting with disaster.
Obama/Biden '08 - The right way forward

All in all I agree with that assessment. I actually like Joe Biden a little more now. He did a good job, especially being in the position of having to defend someone he was running against just a few months ago.
One thing that's still murky is who is going to tax who and how much? Why is McCain supporting tax breaks for oil companies, or is it that he is wanting breaks for all companies in order to stimulate the economy? What is the difference between a windfall profits tax and the money the Palin Administration gave to Alaskans from oil company revenues? Why is McCain supporting the bail out proposal even though that goes against what most people, especially Republicans believe?
Palin's best point/dig was when she got on Biden and Palin for constantly looking to the past. That's true. I'm sick of the Bush bashing.

Biden won by a wide margin in any sane universe. He answered the questions asked, instead of just parroting canned slogans. He demonstrated knowledge and experience that Palin simply lacks.
That Palin chanted her mantras better than in recent interviews doesn't mean she demonstrated anything approaching qualification to be President. Biden did. Stephanopolous is just continuing his dreadful performance that dates back to his serving as a "moderator" to the worst run debate in political history.

Sarah Palin dumb as what the TV shows VIEW potrayed?...I don't think so.
She is great tonight and proud to be an American.!
Posted by: carl | Oct 3, 2008 12:56:05 AM
Jess...I'm a Hillary supporter voting McCain/Palin and Hillary is wrong here. I can't belive she's buried the hatchet either. Funny how she referes to the guys as Senators and drops the Governor before Sarah Palin's name. Little green eyed monster I guess, since Palin didn't ride her hubby's coattails to any political success. SHE'S DONE IT ALL ON HER OWN....from humble beginnings to Governor....serving this country she puts first like McCain.
Obama is actor mentality....me, me, I, I. NEVER EGO FIRST....COUNTRY FIRST...McCAIN/PALIN!

Biden is a old, Washington insider, Obama is a party line follower. If you vote for Obama, you might as well be voting for Biden and Pelosi and this do nothing congress. McCain, who is also a Washington insider, BUILT HIS CAREER PUSHING FOR CHANGE AND STANDING UP TO HIS PARTY, Palin in her short career as GOVERNOR did the same thing!. I think you have to be a complete MORON to think Biden will somehow magically change from his old insider Washington politician now that he is VP! A leopard can never change it's spots! If you are truly for change and want people who will goto Washington and do the people's work, it's McCain and Palin, THEY HAVE A RECORD OF DOING IT! Biden and Obama are insiders who is acting like the same old politicians saying things just to get elected!

Did anyone else notice that this lady could not construct grammatically correct sentences? And really, I've had it with her cutesiness and folksiness. Her now trademark viciousness was low key tonight. She's also clearly the anti-intellectual. it's bizarre how her ticket has manipulated the press - now claiming that her STUPID or blank-stare remarks were the result of editing?! What about the Gibson interview?! I think Ifill was too easy on Palin, not pursuing her when she lied or evaded questions.

Palin A - authenticity
Biden B+ - the emotion when he talked about his lost wife and son was his best of the night. But his lies for Obama was just too much.
Biden's major gaffe:
1. He said Obama is ready when he was so adamant that Obama is nowhere ready just a few months ago, before Obama gave Biden no choice but to lie for him by offering the VP slot.
2. Biden said he could not change. If he couldn't change how can he change Obama.
Palin's major gaffe:
1. She gave us only a fraction of the fake Obama. He has so much credibility problems that Palin would need 2 or 3 debates just to list them.

I guess all you Obiden fans were pretty upset when all your candidates flaws were pointed out on national television.Like how he knocked Obamas experience himself, said he wasn't ready to lead our country, and then tried changing the subject when he was confronted about this.If you can say one thing about him it's he's always good for a laugh.
Posted by: Publius | Oct 3, 2008 12:59:52 AM
Why is it that all the liberal media polls have Biden winning hmmm. If anybody is interested Fox Poll has Palin winning 86% to Biden 12%. Now considering that Fox News has the top news shows 13 out of 15, that would indicate that the American people view Fox a heck of a lot more than ABC/CBS/MSNBC. If the thousands that voted in the Fox Poll overwhelmingly give Palin the victory 86% to 12% means millions of Americans who watch Fox News can not be wrong. This spells big trouble for Obama come November!

Sarah Palin won the debate by holding her own with poise and confidence. The strength and quiet joy she showed tonight are remarkable in light of the attacks she has endured. As governor of Alaska, she has demonstrated her ability to bring about change. Obama and Biden talk about change, but Palin has actually accomplished it. Her performance tonight should silence those who believe she is not up to the task of being vice president of the United States.
