Stephanopoulos: VP Debate Report Card

Share

October 03, 2008 12:33 AM

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos reports: During their debate tonight in St. Louis, Mo., both vice presidential candidates Republican Sarah Palin and Democrat Joe Biden carefully stuck to their strategies and did very well with the strategies they had.

This was a substantive, civil, passionate and pointed debate. Neither candidate fed into the stereotypes about themselves.

Strategy:
Biden A
Palin A-

Biden came in ready to debate Republican presidential candidate John McCain tonight, not Palin. He repeatedly attempted to portray McCain as a continuation of George W. Bush's presidency. That is the fundamental strategy of the Obama campaign and Biden did it in every single answer tonight. Biden was coherent and consistent.

Palin also did well on strategy. She showed she could handle the debate questions, and hewed to her strategy of portraying herself as a Washington outsider who in her own words could "connect with the heartland." She aggressively attempted to paint Obama as a liberal and tried to drive a wedge between Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and Biden on the issue of Iraq.

But Biden gets the edge here because if McCain can't convince voters he's taking the country in a different direction than President Bush, he cannot win this race -- and that's the case Biden made effectively tonight.

Style:
Biden A-
Palin A

From the minute Palin walked onstage and said, "Nice to meet you, Joe -- can I call you Joe?" she had her performance down. It was very winning and very appealing and we saw that throughout the debate. She also tried to wink to the audience about four or five times and you got the sense that she really was connecting with the people back home.

Biden had a more just-the-facts style. But the majority of the voters in the country agree with him over Palin on key issues. At one point the Delaware senator appeared to get emotional when talking about his children -- a key reminder his son, Beau Biden is going to Iraq. When Palin misidentified Army Gen. David D. McKiernan, commander of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, as "McClellan" Biden bit his tongue -- a gentlemanly move.

Accuracy:
Biden B
Palin B

Both made some misstatements. When Biden argued Obama never said that he'd meet with the president of Iran, he was wrong there. When Biden said that McCain had voted exactly the same way as Obama on a tax vote -- that was false. Palin inaccurately claimed Obama had voted to increase taxes 94 times. She also erroneously claimed that under Obama, the government would take over health care.

Overall, Palin didn't freeze or make any major mistakes. She talked about herself more than Biden talked about himself, likely to reassure voters who don't know much about the first-term Alaska governor. For his part, Biden didn't go on too long and was never boorish.

But they were each playing a very different political game in this debate. Palin seemed to be speaking directly to the people back at home in Alaska, a key strategy that could win her support among blue collar voters. But she was careful not to answer the charges Biden was making against Bush or McCain.

My gut tells me there will be a partisan response to this debate with Democrats arguing Biden won, and Republicans reassured by Palin's performance. However there was nothing to this debate that is likely to change the trajectory of the race.

Biden was great. Palin was so darn cutsey that I had to check my sugar....missed some of the debate to avoid diabetic coma.

Obama all the way and God Bless Joe Biden....

Only real loser was Ifill and she let the McCain camp get to her. Her guestions are never particulary insightful, but tonight was an all time low. She didn't ask good guestions nor did she do follow-up when Palin patently refused to answer. She caved to pressure and that was sad. If she couldn't do her best, then she should have stepped aside and let someone else do it....although Jim Lehrer was not much better. And after the sad attempt that Gibson and Stephanoupolis gave during the primary, I can't recommend them either.

Times like this sure makes you miss Tim Russert.

Hillary had Bill write her supportive statement of Biden. Personally, she can't stand the fact that Biden supported Obama instead of her in the primary. Go Hillary.

Yeah, figures George. Everyone knows you are as left wing as ABC. Wonder why ABC couldn't interview a commentator that was non-biased. Palin won hands down and you just couldn't get yourself to admit it.

How can anyone say Biden is Knoledgeable? He asked a paralyzed man to stand up for goodness sake!

Posted by: Publius | Oct 3, 2008 1:04:06 AM

Palin once again proved that she's not ready to lead. Can anybody be so foolish to trust her to govern the greatest country on Earth? She is not qualified, period. She couldn't even respond to questions been put to her in a logical and intelligent way, she could only repeat what's been prepared for her over and over again and often those resonses had nothing to do with the questions asked. I am sick and tired of hearing her dishonest talks.

Biden, on the other hand, showed he has the knowledge, experience and passion on all the issues important to Americans. He showed he's a statesman. He is ready. He will be a great VP and he is ready to lead when needed.

Vote for Obama/Biden. Absolutely no doubt about it.

Why is it that all the liberal media polls have Biden winning hmmm. If anybody is interested Fox Poll has Palin winning 86% to Biden 12%. Now considering that Fox News has the top news shows 13 out of 15, that would indicate that the American people view Fox a heck of a lot more than ABC/CBS/MSNBC. If the thousands that voted in the Fox Poll overwhelmingly give Palin the victory 86% to 12% means millions of Americans who watch Fox News can not be wrong. This spells big trouble for Obama come November!

FACTS: The reality is that most polls indicated the Biden won. Even Time poll said Biden won. The FOX poll is the one that the one that is really off!!!! Think about it? DO YOU REALLY THINK SARAH PALIN WON!!!!Give us all Americans a break, sh lost, period

I'm an independent, and I was leaning Obama/Biden because I wasn't sure about Palins ability to lead, in case something happened to McCain. But seeing the debate tonight, I am now voting for McCain/Palin because she proved that she has more knowledge and experience than Obama does.

Gov. Palin was too easy on bashing Obama....she had several opportunities..could have mentioned that McCain actually returned to Washington to work on this economic bail out....and Obama phoned it in as usual....while continuing to campaign heavily and air ads (McCain suspended his).
Vote the real CHANGE...McCain/Palin, the grown up choice.
The kiddy kool aid drinkers will hopefully be too drunk on Nov. 4 to get to the voting booths.

What debate George? Palin read from a prescripted set of index cards. She never responded to several questions asked by Gwen, including her take on the bankruptcy laws, and the Israeli relationship to the US. She read her talking points, and never addressed any of Biden's assertions about McCain NOT being a maverick, McCain voting against health programs, and on and on. This was the tactic to begin by attacking Gwen and Joe, and trashing the debate rules. There was no debate, simply Sarah going down her talking points..ignoring Biden's tears over his family tragedy, simply because she wasn't listening to a word he said. It was a joke to anyone who actually paid attention to what was being said. Those who just saw Sarah, the hockey mom, and macho woman, and to hell with policy thought she won. That was about 30% of the audience, just about where Bush stands.

What is with Palin and the winking - she seems so hokey to me, and of course she didn't answer the questions.

Posted by: wallace | Oct 3, 2008 1:05:23 AM

Chuck, Which Fox poll are you talking about. The one on the Fox website shows Biden=61 and Palin=39. Please check. Forget what is on Foxnews TV screen. It's inaccurate.

Posted by: Jayboz | Oct 3, 2008 1:05:35 AM

As a woman, I am embarrassed by Sarah Palin's winking, cutsey, folksy affectations layered upon memorized talking points floating as a smokescreen for an apparent total lack of critical thinking.

Posted by: Elizabeth Anderson | Oct 3, 2008 1:05:38 AM

George,
You missed something and it skewed your grading. Yes, Sarah Palin had it all over Joe Biden for playing the camera - that's her game, remember she was a newscaster. But that's not it.
It's that, once and twice again, Palin did not answer the questions she was asked. She handled herself well (I suspect the entire prelude to the debate was a scam to keep that bar low) but she avoided and bypassed the questions repeatedly using talking points instead of answers.
She speaks to what Americans need and want but she continually refuses to let us know from where she speaks and stands. Enough! I'm for someone who is clear cohesive and concise. Joe Biden won this debate by far.

Fox News has Palin winning????

Now there is a huge shock! Pull the curtain back and you will see Hume and Kristol voting and voting and voting and voting...

Independents are where the votes are and They are choosing Obama and Biden....

If you want to know about the real world, try another place besides Faux News.

Posted by: Southern IL | Oct 3, 2008 1:07:03 AM

George

I dont agree. Biden far outscored Palin on SUBSTANCE.

Palin's folksy style seemed to be a little too calculated to be genuine. I dont think a lot of independents or women are going to be fooled by that. I dont think Joe six pack in his gut is gonna fall for that trick.

Posted by: anya123 | Oct 3, 2008 1:07:26 AM

Governor Palin was fantastic. She was refreshing, interesting and energetic, while Biden was boring and lathargic. With regard to Obama, he couldn't even remember that McCain's first name was John at his debate, about 3 times he called McCain "Jim." "John" is a very simple name but Obama couldn't even remember a simple name as "John." If Obama wins, looks like another dummy in the White House.

Posted by: Doreen | Oct 3, 2008 1:07:34 AM

It was no debate , it was a simple robot named Sarah Plain rattling off a few rehearsed lines and never managed to give one straight answer.Gosh! It will b e a shocker if people still cant transcend get this clown as the next vicepresident of US..that is if they feel they havent had enough with Bush and Cheney already.

Posted by: Dr.T | Oct 3, 2008 1:08:00 AM

Is the GOP happy now? Palin got to parrott out the talking points her dog trainers taught her, regardless if they had anything to do with the question. Another 6-pack simpleton in the Whitehouse will destroy this country for generations. The press were careful to praise her for at least giving semi-coherent answers, whether they were on topic or not. What sad commentary of how low the bar has gotten for the future direction of this country. IF BY SOME MIRACLE McCAIN WINS, PLEASE STAY OUT OF THE SUN!!!

Posted by: joe | Oct 3, 2008 1:08:42 AM

FOX IS #1 IN THE RATINGS FOR YEARS, FOLLOWED BY CNN #2, MSNBC #3 (OF CABLE NEWS).....BECAUSE AMERICANS ARE PRIMARILY RIGHT OF CENTER AND WANT TO HEAR RIGHT OF CENTER NEWS.....THE LIBS ARE IN N.Y. AND L.A. . . nutcases (and I live in Calif). My McCain/Palin yard signs have been up for 2 weeks, and my car stickers and t-shirt is on display too....HILLARY SUPPORTER FOR McCAIN even BEFORE Palin (but I love her).

Posted by: DLM | Oct 3, 2008 1:08:57 AM

Why is it that all the liberal media polls have Biden winning hmmm
--------------------------

Chuck must not realize that FOX also said McCain won his debate. Yet his numbers went down. Obviously they are unbiased right Chuck?

Everyone else in the nation knows FOX has ALWAYS been a GOP cheerleader.

Why do you seem to be the only one who doesn't know this? Hmmmmmmm
