Stephanopoulos: Biden Strategy Edges Palin Style

Share

October 03, 2008 8:04 AM

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos reports: Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin beat expectations last night and she may have gone a long way in stopping the slide in her souring poll numbers.

She didn't make any huge mistakes and didn't have any "deer in the headlights" moments. Her campaign has to be happy with her performance.

But Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden did something even more important. He executed the core strategy of the Biden-Obama campaign -- taking the fight to Republican presidential candidate John McCain, and tying him to President Bush. Biden did that in every single answer last night.

Palin was smiling, upbeat, and confident last night. But it came at a time when people are hurting. Her answer to Biden's attacks on McCain and Bush was to argue that the Delaware senator was looking to the past. But what she did not do effectively last night is explain how going forward McCain and Palin would be different -- a missed opportunity.

This debate last night probably didn't move many people to switch their votes. It likely only solidified partisan leanings and most of the instant polls that came in last night had a generally partisan response to the debate. If you came in liking Biden you thought he won, and if you came in liking Palin you thought she won.

However for the McCain-Palin campaign: that's the problem. This race is solidifying in a trajectory that goes against McCain.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has the edge in most national and battleground state polls.

In a stunning move yesterday, the McCain campaign pulled out of the key battleground state of Michigan. With 17 electoral votes up for grabs, it was a key target for McCain to turn from blue to red.

Going forward, McCain is really only playing in a couple of Democratic states like Wisconsin, maybe New Hampshire, and maybe Minnesota. To contrast that, Obama is playing in a host of Republican states, and is ahead in states like Ohio, Virginia, Florida, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, and Iowa. What this means right now is that Obama and Biden have far more states in play and McCain's only hope is to recreate the 2004 wins by President George Bush. If Obama and Biden can take away electorally rich states like Ohio and Florida, and the three southwestern states, they will be on the path toward victory.

McCain has only two debates left to change the minds of voters. If he's going to win, he's got to get the financial crisis behind him. During the final debates McCain must open up a new line of attack against Obama and create a new playing field.

The bar was set SOOO LOW for Palin, that, regrettably, anything short of a foot-in-mouth comment constituted a victory for her. At the end of the day, aside from what people EXPECTED, the bottom line remains that she answered only half of the questions asked, while reverting to ENERGY anytime she had no answer for the topic posed. By sticking to her memorized script, and completely ignoring questions repeatedly, was a brazen (yet perhaps successful) strategy.

ABC and George are Obama supporters. They hate the fact that Palin didn't screw up like they were predicting. She came out, was honest, sincere, and totally on target. Biden, was totally dull, with his fake crying and attempt to bring down McCain, which failed. Palin was on the offensive, and Biden couldn't handle her onslaught. Palin won this debate hands down!

Well, what republicans can be proud of, is cutting their losses in polls. In respect to that palin did indeed her job. there was no knock-out as they had to fear. But if you think palin won, just because she attacked and attacked and attacked.. here is your question: do you want a vice-president who knows answers or do you prefer one who like to say: no, but lets talk about issues I do know! What is an opinion worth based on no knowledege of the subjekt.

I guess you prefer the liar???

I admit I was worried about Sarah Palin, but I think she held her own, and did well enough to convince me that she can handle herself in the job. Do I think she is qualified enough to be President of the United States? No, I don’t at this point she is. But I don’t think Barack Obama is, either, so I guess I’ll be voting McCain-Palin. The Democratic ticket is upside down. If Biden was at the top of the ticket, I’d be voting Democratic this year. By the way, I’m an Independent, and I think both major political parties suck. It’s a choice between crappy and crappier.

sarah palin sounded scripted. there were moments when it actually appeared that she was reading her answers from note cards. she answered some questions, but not others. joe biden appeared vice presidential, sarah palin did not. she may have charmed some people with her winks and smiles, but i am not one of them. sarah palin did not impress me.

You have the nerve to talk about liars...lol. McCain and Palin do it all the time!

I was going to vote for Obama, but after last night, watching and listening to Biden lie and lie and lie, I know now that the Obama/Biden ticket will destroy America. I challenge all Democrats to look at these two 'wannabees' and see what they will do to us. They want to raise taxes, have no idea of how to negoiate with foreign leaders, and are both socialists. Palin, came across as being the patriotic American, wanting whats best for us...the everyday folk. Obama/Biden are entrenched in Washington politics and have no vision for the future. This Democrat is voting for McCain/Palin...not because Palin held her own, but because I can't stand to see a liar, like Joe Biden, try to pull the wool over America's eyes!

sense the panic in Obama supporters posts. Biden kept saying John is a good man. Joe looked painful when having to lie about his friend mcCain.

It is still amazing and ridiculous that so many people still believe in this female and her running mate. Every outlet this morning is saying BIDEN won, folks so get over it. She had that gosh darn, golly, gee whiz prom queen thing going on and that is definitely NOT what or who you want in charge of the country. Furthermore, on every subject when she spoke, BIDEN had the exact information to refute what she said. She may have put a small bandaid on the bleeding, but it will make no difference in the final outcome of "patient McLame/Pain" - it will succumb. I do pity those of you who will always live in the dark state of denial.

You actually fell for that routine...lmao

Why the heck was she giving shout outs?
Were you in a vice presidential debate or at one of the hockey games? Americans have lowered the bar so far that she could do nothing but "be good". What does that say about us and our standards? She blew it before and she blew it again last night.

Posted by: Bobbi | Oct 3, 2008 8:38:07 AM

I agree, geevill. Biden was stuck between a hard place and a rock. Remember, at one time, Biden said he wanted to run with John McCain. Biden is caught in cross-fire and this debate will hurt Obama. I'm glad....both Biden and Obama are socialist liars......looking backwards and not forward.

Posted by: MichiganDad | Oct 3, 2008 8:39:08 AM

Democrat for McCain!

Now now she was just being folksy...lol

Posted by: J | Oct 3, 2008 8:40:24 AM

Sharon, the problem you have, "sweetie", is that you wanted Palin to fail and realize she didn't. Get over it, "sweetie", she beat the Lyin Biden, suck it up and go get your lattee'.

Posted by: MichiganDad | Oct 3, 2008 8:41:20 AM

It's transparent that winners of debates are always the one leading in the polls. People are getting set on Obama now and they are doing a good job being "boring" and non-confrontal. It was the sneaky Obama-fights behind your back that gave them trouble, that made me dislike Obama much.

Obama is taking the advise of Bill Clinton, focusing on issues and I guess some people are willing to forget he is a thug.

I haven't forgot. And the sexist tearing down of Palin the last month has made me even more convinced US need a woman anything more than ever!

Sarah Palin belongs at the soccer game with all her dyslexic disfunctional kids.Somebody please get her a minivan and haul her but out of town. Her conservitive economic ways are the same economics that have destroyed the country.Conservitism is dead and Palin with it.Goodnight now.

Now that the McCain camp is so thrilled with Palin's debate performance, I fully expect her to hold press conferences and be much more available to the press for interviews.

ALice it is Obama/Biden. They are not socialists either. They will win. American has had it with the lowest common denominator factor in Clinton and Bush.
