Stephanopoulos: No Candidate Has Ever Lost with Obama's Lead Over McCain

Share

October 13, 2008 7:49 AM

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos reports: The presidential election is now just 22 days away, and Barack Obama is leading John McCain by a whopping 53 percent to 43 percent according to the latest  ABC News/Washington Post  poll.

No candidate has ever lost with a lead like this since modern polling began in 1936.

Americans are in a very angry mood right now and that is helping Obama.

A record high of 90 percent of the country believes we're going in the wrong direction right now.

A vast majority of the nation,  73 percent of the country, disapproves of the job President George W. Bush is doing. No president has ever had a higher disapproval rating, not even President Richard Nixon at the height of Watergate.

Obama leads McCain 53 percent to 37 percent when it comes to the candidate voters trust to handle the nation's struggling economy, according to the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll.

Obama's 10-point lead puts him on solid ground with three weeks to go before Election Day. To put this in perspective, three weeks before the 2004 election President George W. Bush has 50 percent support and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., had 46 percent, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll released on Oct. 10, 2004.

However, ultimately the 2004 election results were Bush 51 percent and Kerry 48 percent.

Some presidential candidates have closed the gap in the weeks leading up to Election Day, including Al Gore in 2000, Gerald Ford closed the gap against Jimmy Carter in 1976, and in 1980 Ronald Reagan overcame an eight point deficit to defeat Jimmy Carter. At that time it was Carter who was the unpopular president with a sour economy.

However this time, it's McCain's party with the unpopular president governing over the worst economic crisis to hit the nation since the Great Depression.

With three weeks to go before the election, McCain has an uphill battle. There are also signs that his campaign's more aggressive attacks against Obama have backfired.

A majority of Americans believe McCain is mainly attacking opponent 59 percent versus only 26 percent who say that about Obama, according to the latest ABC/Post poll.

To his credit, McCain cut off a woman at a campaign rally in Minnesota this past weekend who erroneously said Obama is "an Arab."

"I Can't trust Obama. I have read about him and he's not, he's not.. Uhm… He's an Arab ," said the woman.

McCain took the microphone back and said,   "No.No Ma'am. No Ma'am. He's a   … He's a decent, family man, citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues. And that's what this campaign is all about. He's not. Thank you."

McCain gave an honorable response but his campaign has unleashed a torrent of attacks and negative ads against Obama that have contributed to the idea that McCain is the more negative campaigner.

The two presidential debates have been a big boon to Obama. Over the course of those debates 32 percent of Americans think better of Obama after the debates while only 12 percent of Americans say that about McCain and 26 percent of Americans think worse of McCain after the first two presidential debates.

Wednesday's last debate at Hofstra University in New York state is really his last chance to change the minds of voters. The most important thing Obama can do in this last election is make no mistakes and continue the steady performance we've seen over the course of the first two debates.

McCain may be tempted in the last debate to go hard on the attack but that could end up hurting him more than helping him in this environment.

I simply cannot believe how ABC News had gone public for Obama. So many of us are through with ABC News. We knew Charles Gibson, Geoge Stephonopolus and Diane Sawyer were all very, very prejudiced where McCain is concerned but to say it on the air is not right. I, along with many people I know have never been asked who we are far. Poor old Joe Biden, what a farce.

Its never too late for people to change their minds once they realise what an obama governmetn would entail:
1) he has always had ties to radical far-left poltiical people and groups. he was known as the senator for acorn because he voted according to their needs. he is a far-left politican and nobody wants this
2) the thought of pelosi and reid and DEMs with a huge majority in congress/house and a dem in the whitehouse means they can go ahead with thier far-left socialist agenda without any problems
3) obama's tax breaks for 95% is a lie. 40% dont pay taxes so basically what he's doing is increasing welfare, just up the left leaning dems ally.

The Record Newspaper Endorsement

For the first time in 72 years, The Record is endorsing a Democrat for president. The last one was Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936. Endorsement of elected officials is a newspaper’s public service duty and we take it very seriously.

McCain is an American hero, and he has served this country in the Senate with determination. He has gone against his party, but the fact is his ties to the Bush administration and its policies are deep. Americans know we cannot keep going down this path. Baraka Obama has demonstrated time and again he can think on his feet. More importantly, he has demonstrated he will think things through, seek advice and actually listen to it.

In addition to his smarts and energy, possibly his greatest gift is his ability to inspire. Under this difficult time, these are qualities needed for a leader. Therefore, Barack Obama, a democrat is our choice for president of the United States.

I'm a conservative independent and will be voting for Obama. I am so sick and tired of Bush/Cheney and want a new direction for my country. Even if I have pay more taxes, it will be good for my country. Who's going to pay for soldiers fighting in Iraq? Who's going to pay to repair our crumbling roads and bridges? PLEASE, stop the divisive, negative ads! Shame on you McCain/Palin, you know they're going to raise taxes on the middle and lower income people like they've been doing the last eight years. You know McCain/Palin will CUT taxes on the rich people only.

Barack Obama picked up at least 15 newspaper endorsements this weekend, including six in swing states Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina and Missouri.

It is so sad to see how people make up their mind about selecting the next president of the USA, this is WHY we are in the mess we are right now.

Reality check 40% of the country does not pay taxes how could obama lower them or give a tax break.Neither canidate can not raise taxes in a time like this they would send this country into a total meltdown

Has anyone seen anything by the press that was negative about Obama?
Obama doesn't need negative ads... he's got the press!

Issues and solutions:

CHANGE:
McCain has challenged both the Republican and Democratic Machines. Obama has NEVER voted against the Democratic political line. Obama wants to change from the Republican political machine to the Democratic political machine.

TRUTH:
McCain is honest about challenges and sacrifice needed for what is best for the nation. But who wants to vote for that.
Obama doesn't lie. Obama makes "political promises" of free stuff, subsidies, and lower taxes. Free and/or subsidized: health care, education, mortgage payments, and every thing else you think he said. Who wouldn't vote for that?

In the last debate he now wants to subsidize the economies of the former USSR satellites!

ECONOMY and ECONOMICS:
To pay for this he wants to increase capital gains taxes. Doesn't he know the 401k's have lost money big time? There are no capital gains to tax! He wants to increase taxes on big business. Doesn't he know many are LOSING money or going bankrupt? Where are the profits to tax? I know he didn't major in math or business or economics, neither did I, but even I know this just doesn't add up!

WAR AND MILITARY:
He also wants to reduce military spending. He expects free national security? But he expects the military to be ready and able to go into Pakistan and get Binladen. Plus be ready to go into any country where there is injustice like genocide or what ever. Should they use rowboats and sling shots?

AND he wants ALL young Americans, not just the poor, to either serve in the military, or government foreign service or peace corp. How does he expect to pay for this? Volunteer labor? Forced free labor??

EXPERIENCE:
Palin does not have enough experience to be VP. But as VP she can learn on the job. Obama has more experience than... than... er... ahh... Oh Ya! Palin! (Except of course when it comes to an actual leadership position making actual decisions; and writing actual legislation... but what an autobiographer!). I really don't want my president learning on the job. (Oh I learned I have to increase taxes. Oh I learned when I reduced the military we couldn't stop the terrorists from attacking. Oh I learned that it was actually the Democrats that caused the sub prime mess that took down the US economy.)

If you vote for free stuff and lower taxes and no war then you are as dumb as Obama thinks you are.

God, you guys over there are so dumb! Can you not see that Obama is the quintessential politician who will say anything to get elected? I doubt even Michelle knows his real views on many things. Arggggh! It drives me nuts to see so little question of someone so unsuitable for leader of the free world.

It's like watching a modern day version of the Pied Piper of Hamlin!

Oh well....

I'm amused at how outfits like ABC, CBS and NBC are on track to put themselves out of the news business. Print media is DEAD.
Filled for years by lefty writers, their weak circulation is above zero only because housewives get the paper for grocery store coupons. This soon will be gone as they'll be available on line. Now we have the "Big Three" News networks with viewership dying, (heck last week Fox news , a cable network, beat out CBS...so much for "perky lefty Katie") The problem is, the lefty leaning big three networks are playing AGAINST the very people that actually try to stay informed. Let's face it, your typical Democrat would rather watch Jerry Springer than watch Face The Nation or Meet The Press. Your typical Democrat votes Democrat either because:
1. They're Communists/Anarchists, 2. They're old and senile and think FDR is still alive, or 3. They want a free handout for something they haven't earned, or 4. the UNION told them to vote that way.
In any of these cases they're not very likely to "tune in" to the "Big Three".
People who want to stay informed will be doing so on-line. Kind of makes that Journalism degree about as useful as a degree in Art History or Music Appreciation.

Fannie Mae
Eases Credit To Aid Mortgage Lending

By STEVEN
A. HOLMES

In a move that could help increase home ownership rates among minorities and low-income consumers, the Fannie Mae Corporation is easing the credit requirements on loans that it will purchase from banks and other lenders.

The action, which will begin as a pilot program involving 24 banks in 15 markets -- including the New York metropolitan region -- will encourage t hose banks to extend home mortgages to individuals whose credit is generally not good enough to qualify for conventional loans. Fannie Mae officials say they
hope to make it a nationwide program by next spring.

Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits.

In addition, banks, thrift institutions and mortgage companies have been pressing Fannie Mae to help them make more loans to so-called subprime borrowers. These borrowers whose incomes, credit ratings and savings are not good enough to qualify for conventional loans, can only get loans from finance companies that charge much higher interest rates -- anywhere from three to four percentage points higher than conventional loans.

''Fannie Mae has expanded home ownership for millions of families in the 1990's by reducing down payment requirements,'' said Franklin D. Raines, Fannie Mae's chairman and chief executive officer. ''Yet there remain too many borrowers whose credit is just a notch below what our underwriting has required who have been relegated to paying significantly higher mortgage rates in the so-called subprime market.''

Demographic information on these borrowers is sketchy. But at least one study indicates that 18 percent of the loans in the subprime market went to black borrowers, compared to 5 per cent of loans in the conventional loan market.

In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to
that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980's.

''From the perspective of many people, including me, this is another thrift industry growing up around us,'' said Peter Wallison a resident fellow at the
American Enterprise Institute. ''If they fail, the government will have to step up and bail them out the way it stepped up and bailed out the thrift industry.''

Under Fannie Mae's pilot program, consumers who qualify can secure a mortgage with an interest rate one percentage point above that of a conventional,
30-year fixed rate mortgage of less than $240,000 -- a rate that currently averages about 7.76 per cent. If the borrower makes his or her monthly payments on time for two years, the one percentage point premium is dropped.

Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest underwriter of home mortgages, does not lend money directly to consumers. Instead, it purchases loans that banks make on what is called the secondary market. By ex pan ding the type of loans that it will buy, Fannie Mae is hoping to spur banks to make more loans to people with less-than-stellar credit ratings.

HERE IS WHAT BILL CLINTON HAS TO SAY:

Bill Clinton knows who is responsible for this NATIONAL CRISIS!

PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON: "I think the responsibility that the Democrats have may rest more in resisting any efforts by Republicans in the Congress or by me when I was President to put some standards and tighten up a little on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac."

My Comment: You're right, Mr. President. It didn't have to happen
