The Note: McCain Swings, Misses in Bid to Shift Race

October 08, 2008 9:05 AM

ABC News' Rick Klein reports in Wednesday's Note:

NASHVILLE -- John McCain wanted to have 10 of these?

The town-hall meeting may have been Sen. John McCain’s salvation in the primaries, but McCain and Sen. Barack Obama roamed the stage for 90 minutes to end up basically where they started. (Here’s guessing Gov. Sarah Palin doesn’t spy any gloves on the mat.)

It was a status quo debate, in a solidifying contest, and McCain didn’t win in a clash he needed to be all his. For a campaign looking for pivot points, for big ways to change the direction of a race that has veered out of its control, there’s not much in place Wednesday that wasn’t there Tuesday. (And the ongoing market meltdown probably would have swamped it anyway.)

Your consensus: McCain lost, by not winning. Even the Jell-O didn’t stick. He now has precisely one opportunity left to command the simultaneous attention of the assembled press corps and the nation at large -- and it might come too late to move the big rocks assembled in his path.

“If McCain's principal mission was to change the course of the campaign, it was difficult to find evidence that he succeeded,” Doyle MacManus writes in the Los Angeles Times. “In a debate that served largely as an empathy competition, the two candidates battled to something like a draw.”

Politico’s Roger Simon: “If you had to say somebody lost Tuesday night, it was McCain. Because he had to win and he did not. He is the one who has to change the current trajectory of the campaign, and he did not do that.”

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos scores it for Obama, with an A on substance, compared with McCain’s B+: “It was Obama who once again edged out McCain in the debate, sticking to his strategy of portraying himself ready to serve as president. . . . We saw Obama continue with the strategy that he started with in the first debate: showing that he belongs up there on that stage as a potential Commander-in-Chief. That is where Obama made his greatest advances tonight, and he will likely be seen as the winner of this debate.”

CNN polling called it 54-30 for Obama; CBS’ uncommitted voters had it 40-26 in the same direction.

The clip that’s destined for a thousand replays: McCain calling Obama “That One.” (Did he mean, “The One”?)

“Senator Obama has a name,” Obama strategist David Axelrod said in the post-debate spin room, per ABC’s Teddy Davis and Arnab Datta. “You'd expect your opponent to use that name.”

Obama acted Presidential. McCain resorted to calling him a name ("that one"). Who would you rather have as leader of the free world?

This should have been Barack’s chance to steal 2nd base and get to third. He is caught now between throw backs from the third base player and second base player, not to mention the shortback is giving mixed signals and there was a 3rd rank pitcher in play. Barack is on the run both back and forth. McCain is in place at third base to put him out with Palin as catcher to seal the deal. This debate was “the link.” Barack went no where except where his paid followers and pundits put him. This is the last inning of a long ball game that we know WE CAN WIN, but waiting for that pivotal play. It will play out! Don’t rush the action of the guy on third base and his catcher….and remember…there are booos and claps/cheers going on on both sides that add to the mix. Barack should be on third base. Barack is NOT on third base. Barack is on the run. John did what he had to do…….AND he is on third base waiting

Mccain why do you think americans are stupid? he is one angry bitter disrespectful man.

BROKAW: Iran attacks Israel, would you be willing to commit U.S. troops in support and defense of Israel?

Obama did not answer the question…it was an easy question if Israel is attacked would he be willing to commit US troops. I’ve always thought that talks come before, Brokaw said Iran attacks Israel…you know like bombs and killing people.

OBAMA: “We’ve got to try to have talks, understanding that we’re not taking military options off the table”.

QUESTION: With the economy on the downturn and retired and older citizens and workers losing their incomes, what’s the fastest, most positive solution to bail these people out of the economic ruin?

Obama did not answer the question….and apparently he didn’t read the bailout bill because there is nothing in that bill that helps homeowners out. The bill helps the banks and Wall Street. Retired people and older citizens are not going to be working on road nor bridge projects either, Mr. Obama.
OBAMA: “Now, step one was a rescue package that was passed last week. It means help for homeowners so that they can stay in their homes. It means that we are helping state and local governments set up road projects and bridge projects that keep people in their jobs”.
“And then long-term we’ve got to fix our health care system, we’ve got to fix our energy system that is putting such an enormous burden on families. You need somebody working for you and you’ve got to have somebody in Washington who is thinking about the middle class and not just those who can afford to hire lobbyists”.
Go back and read the transcripts…Obama doesn’t answer any questions, he keeps repeating the same message over and over as if to mesmerize or hypnotize his audience. I guess if you keep hearing the same message you become a believer and never ask questions or read.

The suicide squeeze is on!

McCain came across as passionate and knowledgeable however, Obama was more so and McCain was edgy and angry the whole time which was difficult to stick with. If he is this angry and edgy now, I worry that he would be another war monger leader. Obama for '08!!!

The GOP painted Obama as "unpatriotic" for not wearing a flag pin early in this election. McCain has not worn one in either debate. Karl Rove better start pitching a fit!

I thought OBUMA was very rude and disrespectful not only to McCain but to the voter in regards to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, when OBUMA said 'There are probably many of you who never heard of them before this crisis" IS OBUMA AN IDIOT WHO ON GODS EARTH DOES NOT KNOW WHO FREDDIE AND FANNIE ARE? OBUMA why do you think Americans are stupid? he is one angry bitter disrespectful man.
THATONE should know! He got tons of money from FREDDIE and FANNIE, the second most of anyone!!!!

HP Boston - McCain may-be on third base, but it is in the Little League only.

Posted by: Paige | Oct 8, 2008 9:25:18 AM

Was McCain even in the room???

Posted by: Howard Gallas | Oct 8, 2008 9:25:39 AM

Good point(s) HP Boston and Mike. I thought I must be experienceing premature Alzheimers symptoms. It seems so clear to me that Mc Cain delivers the message with clarity "straight talk" and very well qualified to be commander in chief...but somehow all the media and blogosphere and posts favors Obama. I don't see it no matter how much I strain my brains..and I aint stupid.

McCain came across as passionate and knowledgeable however, Obama was more edgy and angry the whole time which was difficult to stick with. If he is this angry and edgy now, I worry that he would be another war monger leader. So confused and never answered a question had to ask Michelle what he did not know?? Is he a fool or what? He had these shiny things in his ears and it was so distracting!

Again, the cynics are peeing on themselves after s******* their pants during the first debate.

The poor little parrots haven't learned new words and Fox hasn't given them any new ones to regurgitate.

What you will be fed is more crow. That's about all you'll be eating.

Grey Poupon?

POTUS OBAMA - IT'S A LOCK!!

Posted by: Nat Turner | Oct 8, 2008 9:30:11 AM

Mike: You are so right. Obama doesn' know about war or foreign policy. He is in training with his advisor's. He has a long way to go. I believe McCain answered every question correctly but of courst CNN is pro-obama and most of the callers are blacks so that's why they say he won the second debate. He didn't even win the first debate. All the networks are pro-obama. Especially the NYT and Washington Post. People don't care about Obama's past, he could be a criminal and they would vote for him knowing he can't run the country. This generation needs to wake up and get a grip before voting for Obama.

McCain is a very very sick man.

McCain had to escape the stage immediately after the debate for health reasons.

Obama stayed on for almost 20 minutes to chat with the audience of 80+, sign autographs and take pictures.

Like I already said before McCain is a very sick man who will die in office if elected.

McCain apparently had a dizzy spell three days ago and almost collapsed, but was caught by one of his FBI Security details.

Investigations are underway, trying to force McCain to release his latest medical records.

McCain has either developed prostate cancer or his skin cancer is back.

If any of this is true McCain has less than 3 years to live. And don't talk to me about his mother because she does not have cancer.

At what ages did McCain's father and grandfather die again?

Just think about it for a moment my friends.

McCain will die in office if elected and Sarah "Humpty Dumpty" Palin will be President.

God Save America.

McCain came out with a punch that landed. Apparently you missed it. He wants to ensure that people are kept in their homes. Otherwise, you will have millions of foreclosures, thereby devaluing homes by at least %50. With Obama's plan, we can all look forward to empty, rotting homes coming to a neighborhood near you. (Like the ones in his Chicago district.) However, Obama might know a few slumlords who can help with this....that aren't currently incarcerated.

Because of the bailout package, Obama can no longer keep ANY of his campaign promises. Unless of course he taxes you into the poor house.

I guess if I was a TWC (typical white cynic), I'd be depressed too when coming to the reality that a white woman from middle America and an African from Kenya produced offspring that would contribute to the demise of white American cynicism in this country.

Karma is cold-blooded isn't it?
YOU BETHCHA! (Eye Blink)

Guess how many occurances of this is or has happened in this country?

POTUS OBAMA - Cynicism is on it's deathbed

SadStateOfAffairs ,

That McCain proposal is already in the $700B package that Congress just voted.

It makes you wonder whether McCain read the bill he calims to have "suspended his campaign" to help enact.

You pathetic Repugs are grappling for straws.
