ABC News' Rick Klein Reports: Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, on Wednesday won his bid for another term as the House's top Republican, overcoming a long-shot leadership challenge that emerged in the wake of his party's Election Day losses.

Boehner won a second two-year term as minority leader despite the GOP's loss of more than 20 House seats. He told colleagues that he would serve as a check on liberal policies pushed by President-elect Barack Obama and his allies in Congress, and vowed to seek out new ways to wage “the battle of ideas” against Democrats

“We have an unprecedented opportunity ahead of us.  We’ve been given a chance to break with the mistakes of the past and redefine ourselves as the party of reform,” Boehner told his colleagues Wednesday morning, according to excerpts released by his office.

“I ran for Congress to fight for smaller, more accountable government,” Boehner continued. “This is what drives me. I think we have a unique chance to renew that fight.  From the Northeast to the Deep South, there is a distrust of big government that will only intensify in the months ahead.”

Boehner was being challenged by Rep. Dan Lungren, R-Calif., who promised a return to core conservative principles in a bid that was given little chance of succeeding against the still-possible Boehner.

Boehner will be joined in House GOP leadership by two new deputies who reflect a conservative turn inside the caucus: The new Minority Whip will be Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., while the new chairman of the Republican Conference will be Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind.

"We are going to serve as the honest opposition to the administration of the president-elect," Cantor said.

Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, won his bid to take the helm of the National Republican Congressional Committee, where he’ll replace Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., who abruptly withdrew from the race Wednesday.

Boehner is an idiot! The party isn't even trying anymore. Expect more McCain compromises and capitulation with the Democrats!!! We NEED an opposition party, ANY ONE will do!!!

I believe his name is John "Bohner" (pronounced boh-ner) as in John Stifie. There is no "a" in it so it is not pronounced bay-ner. It is boh-ner. He's trying to hide his true nature. He is a huge piece of work that wouldn't know the truth if it bit him in the face. He's a typical neocon ward heeler who is only interested in stymying reform and blocking anything progressive. I hope he is walled off and encircled like an infection. All Republicans want to do is get power, and win and line their pockets. They aren't interested in helping our country.

Oh good! Bohner has done such a stellar job the last couple of years - I'm glad to see him holding fast.

Signed,

An appreciative Democrat.
