Bush Gets Emotional Over White House Transition

ABC News' Jennifer Duck Reports: President Bush became visibly emotional after speaking about the transition of his presidential powers to President-elect Barack Obama and his team.

After a private meeting with his cabinet, President Bush spoke publicly to around 1,000 White House staffers on the South Lawn.

The administration has been touting their transition efforts which have been underway for over a year.

"This peaceful transfer of power is one of the hallmarks of a true democracy.  And ensuring that this transition is as smooth as possible is a priority for the rest of my presidency," Bush said.

The president and First Lady have invited the Obama family to the White House and announced Thursday he will personally speak with the president-elect next week on issues ranging from financial markets to the war in Iraq.

"I look forward to discussing those issues with the president-elect early next week," Bush said.

"We face economic challenges that will not pause to let a new president settle in.  This will also be America's first wartime presidential transition in four decades," he noted, adding, "For the next 75 days, all of us must ensure that the next president and his team can hit the ground running."

Although his party didn't win, President Bush was gracious to President-elect Obama saying it is "an exciting time for our country" and noting voter turnout was one of the highest in history.

"No matter how we cast our ballots, this election gives us all reason to be proud of our democracy and our country.  And I hope you will join Laura and me in congratulating President-elect Obama and wishing him the very best for his family and our country."

The president took a moment to address the personal issue of White House staffers leaving their posts on Inauguration Day.

"As January 20th draws near, some of you may be anxious about finding a new job or a new place to live.  I know how you feel," Bush told them with a laugh.  "But between now and then we must keep our attention on the task at hand, because the American people expect no less."

The president became emotional when wrapping up his speech.  Visibly moved, Bush bit his lip and the First Lady gave him a hug.

-- I will say he will go down in history as a great President. --

Good thing most historians don't have such a revisionist mindset and instead base history on facts!

Concerned American,

For your question in case you have been misinformed,

From our Greatest Leader's website:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/newenergy_more

Obama and Biden will enact a windfall profits tax on excessive oil company profits to give American families an immediate $1,000 emergency energy rebate to help families pay rising bills. This relief would be a down payment on the Obama-Biden long-term plan to provide middle-class families with at least $1,000 per year in permanent tax relief.

"As January 20th draws near, some of you may be anxious about finding a new job or a new place to live. I know how you feel," Bush told them with a laugh.

Astonishing that he finds this funny -and some of you call him a good man???!!!

We still have 2 months and 14 days left. Can we still bring this guy and his cronies up on war crimes when they're gone?

Posted by: Andrew | Nov 6, 2008 1:36:58 PM

I cannot agree that he has a "good heart". Without being too vitriolic, I really feel that he has set this country back a hundred years with his policies which seem to have been in large part those of the right-wing religious fanatics that advised him. I am hopeful that the future will show what we as a nation are really capable of.

You all should be ashamed of yourselves for the comments about OUR president. No matter what President Bush has done or not done he is STILL the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES and deserves all the respect that goes with the office. The same goes for President-Elect Obama. I did not vote for him and it scares me everyday to think of what could happen, but I will still respect the man and come January 20th he will be given the same respect as every president should. That is what is great about our country. We can say and feel however we wish but my goodness, have a little respect for someone who voluntarily took on the hardest job in the world. And unless you are willing to take his place then you should show some respect.

It is funny how the comments refer to Bush as the worst president of all time but, some way some how he was able to be elected to two terms of office. He may have been the worst President ever but he was smart enough to play on the emotions of the American people to get elected twice. He was already messing up during his first four years but, he used a classic Rove and McCain technique that was to not talk about the financial state of America and talk about terrorist and war. In reality war and money go together we had a deficit when we went to war what did everyone expect? Oh I never voted to Bush the idiot the first or second time how many of you can say that?

Concerned,

I don't care it's windfall or waterfall. He told us we would get it as soon as this fall if he was elected and we voted for him. Do you think it's gonna be his #1 priority to help us poor Americans?

Independent Fighter, your the kind of person that needs to be taken out back behind the shed and given an attitude adjustment. Your a pathetic, worthless pile of crap that needs to be cleaned up!!!

Thank you for eight great years, “W.” No President in history has had to deal with as such hatred as you, yet you handled it with grace and poise. For the last seven years, you’ve lead the fight to keep terrorists off of American soil. Isn’t it interesting that you once had the highest approval rating of any President in history, yet those same people that once approved of you now shun you in our nation’s darkest hour? The people that call you a bad President obviously haven’t been paying attention. Godspeed, George W. Bush. You’ve done our country well, and I only hope your successor can do half as good a job as you have.

Don't like Bush at all, but this was very gracious, very touching and I admire his efforts in this transition.

Well done, Mr. President.

I find it amazing that people believe that Bush "has a good heart." He lied to a nation and started a war, and on the eve of the war he wasn't reflective and somber, but instead he was "feeling good." How does a man with a "good heart" make a country go to war under false pretenses absolutely certain that there will be thousands of casualties?

The cocky creep is upset because he won't be in the spotlight anymore.

I am still waiting for someone to explain the evil "Bush Policies" We have not had another attack since 9/11. Maybe if Clinton had done more, 9/11 would have never happened. Iraq was probably not the place to go, but we are there and can't just pull out like Obama and Pelosi want us to do. America stood up to its enemy and told them that we wouldn't take anymore crap.

Obama has spoken about investigating Bush and Co. for crimes while in office:

"Now, if I found out that there were high officials who knowingly, consciously broke existing laws, engaged in coverups of those crimes with knowledge forefront, then I think a basic principle of our Constitution is nobody above the law -- and I think that's roughly how I would look at it."

He will ask his AG to look into the posibility, and will pursue criminal charges if the appear warranted. No telling what they might find. A federal judge ordered Cheney from destroying documents after he started claiming he could because, in Cheneys own words, "the VP position is not part of the executive branch of government". It will be interesting to see what gets turned up. Remember, we spent millions of dollars in a witch hunt against Clinton, and all they could turn up was a little noogie in the oval office. I think a similar investigation into Bush and Cheney could turn up a vast deal more, and I am looking forward to the feeding frenzy.

Hey people! Congress declares war not the President. John, Hillary and all the rest of your idols voted for it too.

Say what you may, it is like archery - the farther you pull the string, the further the arrow goes. Bush's policies etc pulled the string back quite a bit -- only to result in Obama and the country going forward as much.

GH, where I come from you have to EARN respect. Had he been a GOOD president or even par president I would have no problem. But he abused his position and "screwed the pooch" on every issue that came across his desk. He's an abysmal failure. He was able to get re-elected because of those religious fanatics and his fear mongering tactics. I for one would have voted for a dried up, rotted, moose pelt before I would have voted for Bush.

bush as never been able to do something right. How the 75 days transition can be smooth. Will see, the guy is a joke.

Posted by: acert | Nov 6, 2008 1:48:13 PM

Hey Sam - let's look into criminal charges against Obama while we are at it. Of course, we can't do that, we would then be labled RACIST.
