McCain stumps for Chambliss in Georgia
November 13, 2008 6:25 PM
ABC News' Bret Hovell Reports: John McCain campaigned Thursday for Senate colleague Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) who is in a runoff election for his job.
It was McCain's first campaign appearance since losing the White House last week, and it's only his second public appearance in that time -- Tuesday he appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
McCain said that Chambliss, and the state's other Senator, who was not up for re-election this cycle, need to stay together as a team.
"We can't break up this combination, my friends," McCain said, talking about the two's work together for Georgia and the United States. "We just can’t do that."
McCain praised Chambliss's work on agriculture, national security, and working to reduce spending.
"We’ve got to send Saxby back for that and many of these other reasons," McCain said.
But McCain has not always agreed with everything that Chambliss has done. During his first campaign for the Senate, Chambliss ran an ad interspersing the face of his opponent –- Max Cleland –- with images of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. Cleland is a wounded veteran of the Vietnam War.
McCain called that ad "reprehensible."
"I'd never seen anything like that ad," McCain told CNN in 2003. "Putting pictures of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden next to the picture of a man who left three limbs on the battlefield -- it's worse than disgraceful. It's reprehensible."
McCain joked that "I didn’t think I would be back on the campaign trail quite this early," after his loss last week to Barack Obama, but said that there was a lot at stake. He said that he knew personally how well Democrats could turn out the vote, and asked for the supporters in the room to work hard until the special election on Dec. 2.

So McCain is campaigning for someone he once called "reprehensible", I guess this is another example of that old McCain honor.

"that old McCain honor"
and how easy it can be bought nowadays.

And which democrat lost in the primaries and then campaigned for Obama? Wonder what he paid her with.

HH, no democrat, at anytime, called a war hero that lost three limbs in battle, "a coward", but Chambliss did and McCain is campaigning for the slime bag.

HH, by the way, Max Cleland (the man smeared by Chambliss) was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star in Vietnam, Chambliss didn't serve due to his 5 deferments.
Whatta give it to old John, he sure loves his sleazeballs.

I felt heartbroken when I heard Max Cleland had lost to Chambliss. If there were any justice in this world, it would be his turn to lose now.

There are 58,000 names on a wall in Washington D.C. that Saxbe Chambliss is going to have to face someday. If I were McCain, I wouldn't want to be around when it happens.

Max Cleland is a liberal loser who did not represent the values of the State of Georgia. Go Chambliss! I am sure you would win over the other liberal fraud Martin.

If Georgians want to be on the losing team, they can vote for Chambliss. The State has a better chance with at least one Democratic Senator.

Wow today McCain and tomorrow Joe the Plumber! Way to pick a winning team Chambliss :)

Cleland blew himself up with a grenade on the way to get a beer. I define war hero a little differently than that.

hey JR....get over it, the GOP lost...move on maybe?

Stands to reason McCain would back the man who smeared Max Cleland. Cleland resigned from the 9/11 Commission, calling it "compromised". "This is a scam," Cleland said. "It's disgusting. America is being cheated." "As each day goes by," Cleland said, "we learn that this government knew a whole lot more about these terrorists before September 11 than it has ever admitted.... Let's chase this rabbit into the ground. They had a plan to go to war and when 9/11 happened that's what they did; they went to war."
Why would he say that?
