Obama Says He Is Against Same-Sex Marriage But Also Against Ending Its Practice In Calif.

ABC News' Teddy Davis, Sunlen Miller, Tahman Bradley, and Rigel Anderson report: Barack Obama's nuanced position on same-sex marriage is on full display in an MTV interview which is set to air on Monday.

Obama told MTV he believes marriage is "between a man and a woman" and that he is "not in favor of gay marriage."

At the same time, Obama reiterated his opposition to Proposition 8, the California ballot measure which would eliminate a right to same-sex marriage that the state's Supreme Court recently recognized.

"I've stated my opposition to this. I think it's unnecessary," Obama told MTV. "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage. But when you start playing around with constitutions, just to prohibit somebody who cares about another person, it just seems to me that's not what America's about."

"Usually, our constitutions expand liberties, they don't contract them," he added.

Watch the interview here.

MTV will release the interview as a 30-minute special on Monday at 9:00 am ET and 7:00 pm ET.

I used to support Sen. Obama, but you have to pay attention to what he says. He says, "I'll consider offshore drilling" and "I'll consider nuclear power," but the truth is, he already has, and he won't. Sen. McCain will tell you where he stands, because he rather lose an election than deceive the American people. Sen. Obama says he'll go through government with a scalpal, and cut out wasteful spending. He ridicules Sen. McCain for taking what he calls a "hatchet" to our wasteful spending problem. The truth is, Sen. Obama won't find a special-interest thing he'd like to trim, and he won't find a pork he thinks should be cut. Senator McCain will cut all of them, because the truth is, our government is spending too much. If Senator Obama truly opposes something, he wouldn't put a "but" in it. He has personally dismissed small-town American values as "bitterness" and "clinging" to their second-amendment civil right, and their first-amendment civil right of faith. His running mate has personally dismissed tax-opposition as "unpatriotic," and Sen. Obama has personally called people who oppose tax-hikes as "selfish." Indeed, if Sen. Obama truly was against something, he would leave no room for the opposing opinion to debate as equals in terms of love for our country.

"Sen. McCain will tell you where he stands"

and if you don't like what he says, wait ten minutes and he'll change his stance.
The man tells you what he thinks you want to hear.

Hey Obamacrat, "gag" Obama hasn't based his campaign on name calling and lies.

Maybe if he started calling McCain, un-American, a traitor (he did rollover in one day in Vietnam), Godless and a despicable liar then he would be on an even par with McCain, but he took the higher road and hasn't done that. McCain on the other hand has embraced the despicable.

Obamacrat...

I perceive your first sentence is your first lie. And then you pack them on along with presumption, distortion and personal opinion.

You are entitled to the personal opinion and you do have ONE vote, just like me.

The difference between us is I don't make things up just to prove my point.

Hope trumps despair -- faith trumps fear and love (also known as charity) always triumphs over hate.

My perception is that Barack Obama will be an excellent president.

If I was correct in my perception regarding your first sentence, please think deeply about what I say.
You owe me no reply, I want you to be looking within yourself.

BO talks out of both sides of his mouth!

Posted by: jd | Nov 2, 2008 7:02:34 PM

Hey JR.....you should be thrilled that McCain has ALWAYS taken the high road and stepped away from "Uncle" Jerry Wright. I'd have been all over that at the last debate. AMERICANS care...you cannot run with a 20 year ideology, of hating whites, Jews and THIS COUNTRY and not expect it to come back and bite you in the butt!
NEVER OBAMA!!!!!

One thing about Democrats, they will always find a way to take credit for a position no matter whether it's right or wrong as long as it will get them more votes. Integity?.....not a chance.

Constitutions expand liberties? This is where we get the right to privay (which is not in the Constitution and most constitutional scholars agree on). What's next? The right to welfare and having the courts make people pay more in taxes, as Obama has stated?

Remember....elections have consequences and, given the economy the way it is right now, the only thing Obama will be able to do is appoint judges.

I have to defend the Obamacrat. He never quoted scripture against the Democratic ticket. Sen. Obama, however, insists that he has "a righteous wind behind our backs." I don't support Sen. Obama, but come on, I'm not "un-righteous." And Sen. Obama's spiritual advisor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, said, "God d*mn America, it's in the Bible, God d*mn America." We should keep our political discourse civil. I respect Sen. Obama's antipathy towards guns and religion. If it were the other way around, I would not have explained it the way he did: "they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." I respect Sen. Biden's desire to tax-and-spend. I believe that he thinks that's the best route for our country when he says he thinks that's the best route for our country. I wouldn't call it a "patriotic" thing to do, as he did, and accuse everyone who, like myself, think tax-and-spend is wrong, I wouldn't accuse us of being "unpatriotic." And I respect Sen. Obama's belief that socialism and a welfare society is what is best for America. I don't call his supporters, who stand to gain a windfall from his welfare proposals, I don't accuse them of being "selfish." I think they're great Americans with a different point of view. He said I was "making a virtue out of selfishness" just because I think capitalism is superior to socialism. We need to do away with these divisive and dismissive political tactics that the Obama campaign has engaged in, and above all things, we need to quit acting like Cousin Hussein and quote scripture against our political counterparts.

I voted for Sen. Obama in the primary, but the Sen. Obama now is not the man I voted for them.

I will be reluctantly voting for Sen. McCain.

Kind of a reach for Obama to call McCain unAmerican - don't you think? Has anyone running for office today given as much to his country as John McCain? And Obama - bit of a lightweight under ANY from of dissent would be quite outrageous to even attempt it. As to lying? Check the records; Obama has LIED about abortion, LIED about his commitment to the poor, LIED about his focus on the least of his brothers, LIED about his ACORN involvement and leadership, LIED about his friends, his associates, his work record, his schooling, hi sdrugs, his votes..... in fact, the ONLY true statement he's made so far is that he wants to spread the wealth (but then, right, he LIED abut being a socialist!!

What the hell does he means? He is not in favor of gay marriage, but as long as it in California he is all for it? It makes no sense.

Does Obama even know how to take a stand on something? Anything?

Posted by: coolrepublica | Nov 2, 2008 7:12:35 PM

Is Obama the real anti-Christ or must we wait for another?

As a democrat who actually falls to the left of Obama on this issue, I find his position on gay marriage to be confusing. I suspect that he supports gay marriage but can never say so outright, as that would endanger his ability to get elected.

That having been said, Barack Obama is a law professor and a constitutional scholar. Combined with the fact that he's also African-American, you would think that he would be extra-sensitive to the concept "separate but equal". It was a phrase used to justify the discrimnatory segregation of schools in the US, and was eventually found to be unconstitutional. The act of separating whites from blacks was inherently not equal. The same could be said about the gay marriage issue in California. Telling gay people that they can have "civil unions" that are separate but equal to what "normal" people have is a very dangerous idea.

Though I'm disappointed that Obama (and all of the democratic national candidates) do not have the courage to be more progressive on this issue and stand up for gay marriage nationally, I will proudly support Obama on election day.

How is Obama's grandmother? He went to see her in Hawaii because he said that she may day before he is elected. The election is tomorrow, but I haven't heard a word about her health.

I hope she had a great recuperation and is dong well, and that his trip to Hawaii in the middle of his busy campaign was unnecessary.

In a campaign that Obama said was about "judgement", let's look at the judgement of Obama. Wright, Ayers, Rezco, Acorn, Farrakhan, etc. Any other candidate with an association of people like these would have never come out of the primaries. I know these "friends" don't matter to those voting for Obama but then again "stupid is as stupid does" right Forrest!

McCain isn't responsible for negative attacks on Obama. Neither is Fox News. Neither is Rush Limbaugh. Neither are conservative bloggers. Barack Obama is the only one responsible for the negative attacks, waged against him.

"You just don't want to talk about the issues, because you'll lose."

Wrong. Dead wrong.

I don't want to talk about the issues, because to dignify conversations about a prospective Obama-Presidency....would be like offering a theif who has broken in to my home, something to eat or drink. I'm simply not ready to do that. I have too many unanswered and questions. And no one did that, except Barack Obama.

His contentions regarding the economy, energy and security are easily dismantled. Most democrats are voting based on sheer emotion. They are as uninformed now, as they have been the whole time they talk about "Bush's failed economic policies", yet are unable to cite even one that begins to mirror the failed economic policies installed, loosened, coveted and protected by democrats - in the housing and lending industry debacles, that most crippled our economy and in fact many economies around the world.

Obama is a fraud. He will say anything to get elected, and it may even work. We'll see. If it does, however, we deserve everything we get. This man has sealed off virtually every record that would give us any insight at all regarding his background; and yet, he touts transparency as a fundamental of his platform.

1. Occidental College records -- Not released
2. Columbia College records -- Not released
3. Columbia Thesis paper -- "not available"
4. Harvard College records -- Not released
5. Selective Service Registration -- Not released
6. Medical records -- Not released
7. Illinois State Senate schedule -- "not available"
8. Law practice client list -- Not released

10. Embossed, signed paper Certification of Live Birth -- Not released
11. Harvard Law Review articles published -- None
12. University of Chicago scholarly articles -- None
13. Record of baptism-- Not released or "not available"
14. Illinois State Senate records--"not available"

Contrary to what people say about tin foil hats, what Hawaii officials offered us last week is just not good enough - at this point. For Obama and his lawyers from the Council for American-Islamic Relations to spend even one dollar fighting these cases, rather than produce documentation that would have quelled the charges, is one dollar too much. Transparency?

Secrecy. Deceit. Lies. Protection by a media seduced by his rhetoric, and intellectual fellatio integrated by supporters in love with his slogans.

We will deserve what we get, IF he is elected. I still remember being told W's w's were not-to-be. And yet?

Word.

I sincerely hope Obama/Biden will invite you to join their administration. You have more than proven that you are of the same character as they. Congratulation.
