Obama Says He Is Against Same-Sex Marriage But Also Against Ending Its Practice In Calif.

ABC News' Teddy Davis, Sunlen Miller, Tahman Bradley, and Rigel Anderson report: Barack Obama's nuanced position on same-sex marriage is on full display in an MTV interview which is set to air on Monday.

Obama told MTV he believes marriage is "between a man and a woman" and that he is "not in favor of gay marriage."

At the same time, Obama reiterated his opposition to Proposition 8, the California ballot measure which would eliminate a right to same-sex marriage that the state's Supreme Court recently recognized.

"I've stated my opposition to this. I think it's unnecessary," Obama told MTV. "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage. But when you start playing around with constitutions, just to prohibit somebody who cares about another person, it just seems to me that's not what America's about."

"Usually, our constitutions expand liberties, they don't contract them," he added.

Watch the interview here.

MTV will release the interview as a 30-minute special on Monday at 9:00 am ET and 7:00 pm ET.

Dem McCrat for McCain

How on earth do you even imagine
"blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the sons of God" is quoting scripture against a political counterpart.

No way.

A salutation of "Peace" when one disagrees with another is offered as a positive and hopeful message.

That's not a nuanced position. That's a twisted deception. Only a lawyer could say that out loud and keep a straight face. That's what lawyers do -- say twisted deceptions with a straight face.

Doesn't that remind everybody of that Clinto ("I didn't have sex with that woman... it depends on what the meaning of the word is, is")?

Biden is another lawyer too. That alone is a good enough reason for people not to vote for Obama -- two lawyers heading the country. Can you imagine all the deceptive, twisted double talk that would come from that?

No question this is a bizarre dodge for Obama. Doesn't matter since California is obviously not in play and gay marriage is of the table as an issue nationally. But it's still a shifty comment.

JR, stop drinking the socialist cool aid and think for yourself. You sound like you should be a part of the Huffington Post. How pathetic....

Reminds me of the TV commercial where the guy want both "heads" & "tails" when the ref does the coin toss is done to start a game!

Read this and watch another Obama "waffle"!

Obama just cannot make up his mind about anything.

Posted by: Pat | Nov 2, 2008 7:30:19 PM

This was already passed once before 61% to 39% but the California Supreme Court threw it out. There is nothing in the Constitution that allows same sex marriage. There is nothing in the US Constitution that says you can abort your baby in "private". Quite the opposite. We have aborted over 40,000,000 babies since Roe v Wade. When will we say enough?

Matthew 5:9, you're a typical ObamaFascist. Anytime anyone says something you don't like, you accuse them of lying. You're just like your Dear Leader. So go vote for him.

As a gay person, I DO NOT WANT Mr Obama to endorse gay marriage.

Such a statement would politically kill him.

As soon as Mr. Obama appoints enough justices to the Federal Bench, gay marriage will become a reality.

I am NOT offended he is against gay marriage.
I understand how the game is played.

Per what was reported Michelle Obama when asked on Wednesday or Thursday - sorry I do not remember exactly - said, that the "grandmother is just fine".
Next news I read was the dismissal of the Berg's lawsuit by a Hawaiian judge. I cannot help but wonder if there is any connection to Obama's trip to Hawaii.
Mainly if I take into consideration that Obama when vacationing on Hawaii after the primaries visited with grandma for one afternoon alone, I mind you, no wife or children went with him.
All three other contestants in this race presented their extended families; not Obama; allegedly he knew nothing about his auntie in Boston, although she came for his inauguration in 2004...
Here are my earlier thoughts on the subject:
Here is what I do not understand - maybe someone out there can offer some help:

Every single legal immigrant that came to US in the last 30-35 years is painfully aware of illegal immigrants from the same country he/she came from. Each one of us knows a number of them and the word about them gets around much faster one would imagine. How it is that Obama knew nothing, given his in not so distant past contact with Auntie?

99% of us, legal emigrants, when we had a visitor, be it family member or friend, made darn sure that the visitor boarded the plane to return back home. Are we to believe that Auntie came for inaugural and than went on her own to throttle the country? By the way is it not common courtesy to take care of an elderly relative?

How easy/difficult is it to get a unit in public housing? In Boston? What kind of documents is needed to request one?

Why nobody got on the case of Obama's campaign about the "small contribution" and credit card security check avoidance? How was auntie on public, our tax money, able to send donations to Obama? To the same nephew whose 2007 adjusted gross earnings were $4,139,965.00?
Some nephew, I have to say.

This smooth talking liar is speaking out of both sides of his mouth and has been for decades.
He wants to create a civilian national police force (aka armed thugs and enforcers aka death squads)?
He wants to bankrupt coal companies?
He wants to spread the wealth around?
He wants to increase taxes to thos emaking over $250,000 ...well wait a minute...those making over $200,000, err.... uhhh...No it's thos emaking over $150,000, wat no Inkow it's thoise aming over $120,000, uhhh .. well he is gonna increase taxes somewhere and give money to those that aren't wealthy. But it's not welfare, it's income re-distribution.
I can hardly wait until my grandsons are forced, err.. uhh.. asked to join the Obama Jungend. The uniforms are so cool. Oh what's that? They can't join unless they're black?

Such bitterness has enveloped the GOP and their conservative poodles.

Losing in a landslide will do that to you.

Get used to 20-years out of power.

Vote McCain/Palin!

Posted by: FL for McCain | Nov 2, 2008 7:42:33 PM

Hmm...."no one went to Hawaii with Mr. Obama"

Whoever posted that is a whack job.

Mr. Obama is accompanied by 230-secret service agents, who by law, cannot leave his side.

Oh how trite these conservatives have become.

Posted by: bob | Nov 2, 2008 7:43:36 PM

It is so wickedly fun to watch the meltdown of the

conservative movement.

Say, bye bye.

I think you're referring to me, certainly you don't intend to take one of the beatitudes to task!

It has nothing to do with what I like or don't like -- though I am a total lover of the truth -- I will call a lie a lie whenever I perceive it to be so.

Remember -- intentional falsehoods, half truths, mis-quotes and distortions all DO qualify as lies.

I can't vote for my Dear Leader -- He's not running.

I was before it bewhen I were against it....or sum such confabulated idiocy...Obambi is in a tight spot and like all weasels wants to have it both ways. I think he was voting 'PRESENT'....

Posted by: WoodHeat | Nov 2, 2008 7:46:42 PM

I think both men truly want to serve. From what I gather, they would both be an improvement in what we have. Our challenges are huge. I noted in JR's post that he may be a Christian as he referred to Matthew 5:9 -- but I believe both men will work for peace. I find myself confused by the democratic party because it seems so egocentric at times. It seems like the farther we get away from God, the more lost we become, and the more at risk our nation becomes. Support peace. Support life. Love our neighbors as ourselves (if we all tithed 10%, imagine how much that could help people). Just a few thoughts...

I really wish that Obamaa's grandmother is recovering or has already recovered of her ailment.

Yet, having read the blog by Mike Jones, I begun to wonder why Obama made the trip to Hawaii, without anyone of the news media allowed into the house to see him and his grandmother.
