Obama Transition Comes Into Focus

November 06, 2008 2:28 PM

ABC News’ Rick Klein Reports: President-Elect Barack Obama on Thursday began filling out what will become his new administration, naming two close advisers to high-ranking leadership posts, scheduling his first post-election visit to Washington, and arranging a Friday meeting with his economic team.

Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., accepted the position of White House chief of staff on Thursday, a day after it was formally offered to him by his friend and fellow Chicaogan.

And David Axelrod, another Chicago native who served as Obama’s chief strategist during his presidential campaign, will become a senior adviser in the Obama White House.

On Friday, Obama plans to meet with his economic advisers, though he is not expected to name a Treasury secretary at that time. He’ll also take his first questions from the press as president-elect.

On Monday, Obama and his wife, Michelle, will be in Washington, where they’ll get a White House tour from President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush.

The choice of Emanuel, the hard-charging former Clinton White House aide and deputy House Democratic whip, elicited the first sharp partisan words from prominent Republicans since Election Day.

“This is an ironic choice for a president-elect who has promised to change Washington, make politics more civil, and govern from the center,” said House Republican leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

The Republican National Committee reference Emanuel’s some-time nickname -- “Rahmbo” -- and deriding him as a “partisan insider who played a lead role in breaking Washington.

“Barack Obama’s first decision as President-elect undermines his promise to ‘heal the divides,’ ” said Alex Conant, an RNC spokesman. “The White House needs a chief of staff – not a chief campaigner like Emanuel.”

Democrats praised the choice, nothing Emanuel’s background in high-profile posts in both the executive and legislative branches.

“He is the perfect choice. He knows the Hill, he knows substance, he knows politics, and most importantly, he can get the job done,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who headed Senate election efforts while Emanuel lead House Democratic election efforts during the 2006 election cycle.

To all of the Obama supporters, whatever your reason for supporting him: We who opposed Obama will extend him and your chosen party EXACTLY the same sort of courtesy, respect, decency, support, cooperation, and assistance that you have so generously and enthusiastically given President Bush for the past 8 years, and we will ENJOY doing so, just as YOU have all this time. In fact, we'll try to be even MORE generous! Elephants have LONG memories, you know.

Enugu,

The President of America is not going to be President of some 50 African Banana Republics.

When are your African dictators going to starting running their countries properly instead of waiting for someone else to tell them how to?

We Americans have enough problems to solve and get ourselves out of this deep hole that Bush dug us into in the last 8 years, before worrying about African dictators.

The end of the era of the Ole Establishment, GOOD RIDDANCE.

They've stolen and lied for years, while leaving the "real" americans to suffer. I'm so happy most have awaken and have had enough of the GOOD OLE BOYS running this country into the ground.

"They" built this country on the blood of others and laughed all the way...whose laughing now?

Good choices so far. The trolls on these blogs would complain if he picked Jesus, their brains in the place they are sufferr from a severe case of dyspepsia. Boehner of course is showing that he is ready to roll up his sleeves and go to work improving life in America. The first thing he does is belch some complaint. He had better worry about his own political skin and getting his party back from a dysfunctional state.

Rahm is useful not in bashing Replublicans but in whipping dems into line- with a huge majority this is what Obama will need.

What is partisan about selecting someone you trust to be a chief of staff. Sure Rahm Emanuel is a partisan democratic and for the Republicans who ran the most partisan Congress and the White House to complain about this is rediculous. For pete's sake you fired Attorneys for not prosecuting Democrats. You put unqualified personnel just because they were Republicans. Shame on the Republicans that complains. Obama has assured that he will be bipartisan and that does not mean he will surrender to the Republicans everything. Unlike the Republican administration he will consult with everybody, listen to them, compromise where possible and necessary, use competant Republicans in key positions. But he will not and should not compromise on fundamentals he believes in. For Republicans spending on anything other than defense is just spending. To many of us spending on Education, infra structure, affordable health care etc are investment in the future of the USA. This is not something you can compromise on.

Hell, he is more qualified to be VP than Palin was, here-here-bravo!! If the Rep-thugs knew so much about choice of Executive Position for the Government, they should have done something about Sill Sarah!! We unlike the Repathungs don't choose people to get a crowd, we choose people to get the job accomplished. Don't expect Sen. Obama's choices to be a "Joe-Six Pack", ya'll tried that and you see what it got ya!!

When I am in charge of African Affairs, All dictators on the continent will run for re-election. I will encourage the continent to reconsider PAN African federation of states with a single leader captioned in Johannesburg South Africa or Lagos Nigeria.

"Elephants have LONG memories, you know."....Don't compare yourself with elephants, they are intelligent. You can whine and moan for 8 years if you wish, you'll probably notice that the people who voted for the right guy will be too wrapped up in helping the country and away from the blogs enjoying life. You'll be talking to yourselves.

I am sure john bohner would have liked Carl Rove to be the Obama's chief of staff. John should reflect how the White House functioned in the last eight years before he starts commenting.

Posted by: GV | Nov 6, 2008 3:25:14 PM

This is all irrelevant. Pelosi and Reid control the country.

Posted by: Neo Politicus | Nov 6, 2008 3:26:42 PM

Steve_NJ: You are right, I know what I am talking about. Africans are at falt for their problems, but the West and their powerful coporation will never allow peace on the continent untill all land based resources in the continent is scrapped up into thier wallets. America uses 75% of world resources for 15% of world's population. How doe sthat happen you may ask?

I'm glad every thing is starting to move into action. It makes me excited that we are going to have a fresh start.

One of the most nasty partisans. Now thats more change we can believe in.

Posted by: Jim | Nov 6, 2008 3:28:48 PM

peoples_prez: I pray you are right and President Barak Hussein Obama will not succumb to the will of any special interest groups, whether on the left or on the right. I hope he sticks it to the Oil industry and starts spreading out the dividends, just like they do in Alaska. And I especially hope University education will be just as it is in Spain and France, free for all citizens.

Hey Schwarzenegger just proposed a tax increase in California. I guess this makes him a marxist too.

I'm sure George Bush will make Obama's transistion a lot smoother and not sabatoged as the Clinton/Bush transistion. You won't see this fact mentioned in the press, but I remember the Clinton staff's disgraceful behavior like it was yesterday!

It looks like the stock market has already predicted what a B.Huessein presidency will bring America- higher taxes and more people on welfare. But hey, atleast America will have a more "favorable" world view. Screw what the rest of the world thinks, America has done more for the rest of the world than any 10 countries combined.
America was founded on self-relaince(personal responsibilty), small gov't, strong military, low taxes. All these things are the direct opposite of what Barry stands for, but hey, atleast we've got change comin!! yeehaa!!
