Obama's Grandmother's Absentee Ballot will be Counted by State of Hawaii
November 03, 2008 8:21 PM
ABC News' Tahman Bradley, Rigel Anderson and Arnab Datta Report:
While Sen. Barack Obama's late grandmother Madelyn Dunham will not live to see the outcome of this historic election, her 2008 vote will count.
Hawaii Chief Elections Officer Kevin Cronin told ABC News this evening that the absentee ballot cast by Dunham before she passed away will count. Cronin said Dunham's absentee ballot was received on October 27 and found to meet the requirements of a valid absentee ballot and will therefore be counted with the rest of the state's ballots tomorrow.
Obama learned that his grandmother lost her battle with cancer early Monday. She was 86.

I'm so happy to hear this. May Toot rest in peace.

Barack Obama
44th President of the USA
The fascists who hijacked the Republican Party, who systematically destroyed the American economy, who committed war crimes in Iraq, who laughed while New Orleans drowned, are consigned to history.

Tomorrow's for Toot, may she rest in peace and smile down on her grandson, the next president of the united states

I suspect, by law, this is how all similar situations are handled. If an absentee ballot is submitted before death, it's counted. It's no different than somebody early voting and then dieing before election day.

That says a lot about the California Republican Committee. I guess they aren't the "compassionate conservatives" that we used to hear about.
I am praying for the Obama family at this difficult time, and I'm happy to know they'll count her vote.

I seem to remember that Obama took several members of the press with him to provide press coverage for the trip. I also remember seeing pictures and reports of his visit on the air.
And to answer the question, no I don't mind that he did it. He couldn't very well get on a commercial flight because of all the Secret Service coverage he now requires.

Biden buried his mother-in-law and Palin mocked him.
Obama went to his grandmother's bedside (as she lay dying) and the McCain campaign mocked him.
The Republicans are scum.

I think that Tom was pointing out the CA Republican Committee's idiocy and their EXTREMELY bad timing.
If not, Shame on you Tom! Shame on YOU!

Blessings on Barack Obama's Tutu and condolences to her grandson and his family. She worked hard all of her life and raised a fine man who will be a great president.

I'm sure his secret service detail would have had a lot of fun getting on a commercial flight with him. Between the security nightmare at the terminal and them having to get their weapons cleared through the gate. Nevermind the media scrambling to get seats. So, once the FEC rules on this, a fine? election invalidated? Give it a rest.

Karma's a bitch!

I'm pretty sure that the Secret Service insisted that Obama use the campaign plane and not public transportation. You don't see presidential candidates flying on commercial airplanes anymore than you see the President doing it--it isn't safe for anyone.

I think I am going to vomit...we are electing a man not a saint here. His GM's vote will be the first real dead person who we will know, all the other dead people who vote never get their real names out there.
This guy gets away with more than he should. This is how dictarships hatch...we give them to much lee way on things that should be accountable.
Posted by: i am so I can! | Nov 3, 2008 9:21:13 PM
He was conducting campaign business nonstop on that plane over the course of that 24 hour trip. Was he supposed to book a secure flight with his secret service entourage and staff on American Airlines instead? Please.

We from Musciobsession would like to extend our deepest sympathy for Sen. Obama.
God Bless her Heart.

What a beautiful last gift to America: tut's vote for change.
First the wingnuts were saying that Obama was really in Hawaii to fake his birth certificate, now they're whining because he took his campaign to see is dying grandmother. Stay classy, guys and gals. Real classy. On second thought, keep it up. This vile swill is driving more and more voters towards Obama and change.
R.I.P. Madelyn Dunham. God bless.

Tom, Does it occur to youthat Hawii is in the US and the campaign planes go everywhere with the candidates? Is this worse than buying 150,000 worth of design clothes for a candidate.
Posted by: February | Nov 3, 2008 9:26:15 PM
Why does it matter if he rode his campaign's plane to visit his grandmother? I mean, the ill-timed complaint the GOP filed with the FEC... Its just stupid. His grandmother was dying, just let him paddle a boat there if he wanted to. Get some perspective. It doesn't matter. Whoever thinks it does just wants to make a mountain out of a molehill because they can.
Republicans are not scum, people with warped ideas about what merits real outrage are.
God bless you Madelyn, and I hope your vote makes a difference tomorrow night.

May the family be at Peace.
Tom, geeze.
And, no, although there were reports that Obama left for Hawaii to visit his dying grandma, there was no "press coverage" of the event. He was there for about one day and came back.
Posted by: MaryM | Nov 3, 2008 9:27:43 PM
In Hawaii she probably voted for Chief Wannarigelection.
