Palin Makes Last Pitch to Ohio

ABC News’ Kate Snow and Imtiyaz Delawala Report:  Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin kicked off her final day on the campaign trail in Ohio this morning, telling a small crowd of supporters that they “must win” on Election Day tomorrow, while continuing to critique comments Obama made on the coal industry in San Francisco earlier this year -- saying that Obama must take “truth serum” when he visits the city.

“I'll tell ya, this is the right place to be for us to kick off this final day of campaigning. This is the right place to be,” Palin said to a crowd of 1,000 in Lakewood, Ohio outside of Cleveland. “You can just feel it here, you can just feel it here in Ohio -- victory's coming, we can do this, we can win, we can win Ohio. And we must win for you.”

Palin continued a line of attack she introduced on the campaign trail yesterday, critiquing Obama for comments he made in a San Francisco Chronicle interview in January 2008 which re-surfaced this weekend, in which he said that his proposed cap and trade fees on the coal industry would “bankrupt” those trying to build new coal plants that weren’t environmentally friendly.

While Palin tried to critique Obama on his words in the interview, she twice stumbled in her response, saying “bankruptcing” and “bankruptcies” when meaning to say “bankrupt.”

“Just yesterday, revelation, an audiotape surfaces,” Palin said. “You gotta hear this tape. You’re gonna hear Obama sayin’ it, talking about bankruptcing, bankruptcy there in the coal industry.”

“So he's talking to the San Francisco Chronicle, and he says that sure, if industry wants to try to build these coal-fired power plants, they can go ahead and try, but they're only gonna be able to do it in a way that bankruptcies the whole industry, the coal industry,” Palin added.

The Obama campaign maintains that Palin is taking Obama’s comments out of context. They argue he never talked about bankrupting the entire coal industry -- instead that his policies would impose high fees for those building new coal-fired plants that produce more greenhouse gases. Sen. John McCain has supported a similar cap-and-trade proposal.

“What I've said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else's out there,” Obama said in the interview. “So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.”

Palin joked that Obama must take “truth serum” whenever he visits San Francisco, referencing Obama’s comments this spring at a San Francisco fundraiser that Pennsylvania voters “cling to guns or religion.”

“And there must be something about San Francisco and he because it’s like -- I heard on Fox News today, it’s like a truth serum where when he’s there he seems to be more candid,” Palin said. As Palin began to reference Obama’s “bitter” comment, a man in the crowd yelled out, “Bitter clingers!”

“There ya go, the bitter clingers, the cling-ons, all of us, I guess, you know holding on to religion and guns,” Palin responded. “So something about he being there in San Francisco.”

Palin, dressed casually in jeans and wearing her hair down, raced through the shortened version of her stump speech, warning the crowd of her fears if Democrats take control of Washington on Election Day.

As the crowd chanted, “We will win!” Palin responded, “We must win, because Ohio, the far left wing of the Democrat party, not mainstream Democrat ideology, the values, the planks in the platform of the Democrat Party. It's the far left wing of the party is getting ready to take over the entire federal government.”

The latest polls show Obama with a small lead over McCain in Ohio, which has proved to be as close of a battleground state as it was in the 2004 election.

Palin spent Sunday hop-scotching across the Buckeye State, trying to rally the Republican faithful to turn out to vote for the McCain-Palin ticket at rallies in Canton, Marietta, Columbus and Batavia, Ohio.

“Now we are just two days away from the election and the time for choosing. Are you ready to help us carry your state to victory?" Palin asked a crowd of nearly 5,000 in Marietta, Ohio Sunday afternoon, drawing wild cheers and applause.

Palin was joined on the trail yesterday by country singer Gretchen Wilson, who performed her hit song “Redneck Woman” at three of Palin’s Ohio rallies. Wilson tweaked the main line of her chorus to sing, "Let me get a big ‘Hell, Yeah’ for the nation's next VP.”

And Palin praised her running mate’s appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend, while offering an optimistic election prediction through advice for her SNL look-alike Tina Fey.

“Did anyone catch John McCain last night on SNL -- Saturday Night Live?” Palin asked the crowd. “He was such a pro in those skits there with Tina Fey. And little advice for Tina -- we want her to make sure that she’s holding on to that Sarah outfit, because she’s gonna need it in the next four years.”

So basically Palin and McCain are lying again and the so called "Liberal" media isn't pointing that out.

Last minute crap like this can be very powerful and the media must condemn it. Your headline should be, "Palin lies about Obama again."

Sarah is the best! She is a breath of fresh air. You guys hate her because she is so energizing!!! There are a lot of people out their who don't want to be mocked like Sarah is so they keep their mouth shut. Then they vote for McCain/Palin.

What's the lie????????

Posted by: usa | Nov 3, 2008 1:28:46 PM

@usa

The lie is that Obama "wants" to bankrupt Coal.

Thats not true. He wants clean coal and is pointing out that ignoring environmental requirements will cause fines which will cause financial burdens on dirty coal plant builders.

McCain has the same stance

Talk about lie.. how about all them MSM polls showing Obama up by so much. Hey Andy what you going to do tomorrow night when Obama gets upset call the MSM all Liars? I think you should get ready for riots because from what I always read you Obama supporters are a hateful bunch!

Posted by: chuck | Nov 3, 2008 1:36:41 PM

He said if they try to build new plants the cost of his fees will bankrupt the "industry"

Posted by: dsimms | Nov 3, 2008 1:36:56 PM

Clean coal is the issue. Obama is for that. But to promise clean jobs from coal, well let's master the technology first. That's the point. And lets let Sarah be the first one down the mine to try it out.

The comment "Taken out of context" is getting to be a pretty lame excuse for Obama or Biden when they get caught saying something they would like to take back. So if that is the case which is out of context "spread the wealth" or "tax break for 95% of middle class" which has never Been defined by Obama's campaign. 1. How do you give a tax break to the 50% of the 95% that do not pay taxes anyway. 2. Have Obama and Biden keep talking we need the wind for our windmill farms.

ABC news at noon in Cleveland. Obama leading in Oh 51%to 43% with 2% undecided.People here are turned off by the robocalls and manipulation of the truth by McCain camp. I had 6 robocalls in less than an hour. With a total of 13 calls from the republicans and 1 from the democrats. Absurd and disgusting.

The GOP's hatred and fear of Obama is almost unprecedented. The last black man to be hated and feared as much was the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

So now COAL is what McCain is hanging his campaign on?

HEY JOHN: CAN YOU THINK ANY SMALLER?

Posted by: Ed from MA | Nov 3, 2008 1:42:17 PM

It's pandering to fear in coal-producing states. Anybody with half a brain can look up the two candidates stances and see that there's very little difference in their positions.

Of course, the portion of the electorate that sincerely believes that Palin was sent to earth by God to protect us all from the Anti-Christ, that demographic isn't going to go do some homework to verify any of the claims.

chuck: We are not a hateful bunch...what we are, are sick and tired of the lies put out by the Repugs. I have yet to see a Republican look into the camera and tell me the truth about anything. It is a spin or a total lie. I will never trust the word of a Republican again.

I don't hate Mrs. Palin I like her it is just that she is NOT prepared or has the knowledge to be vice president. PERIOD

What is the job of a vice-president? Well I wouldn't ask her because she on 4 occasions doesn't know her position.

The GOP's answer to the energy crisis is Alaskan whale oil.
