The Note: Obama Challenged to Lead Early

Share

November 11, 2008 8:38 AM

ABC News' Rick Klein reports in Tuesday's Note:

President-elect Barack Obama might have wanted some relaxation time -- or at least some thinking time before that White House he toured Monday becomes his.

But politics is inviting Obama in at every turn: world leaders reaching out; advocacy groups growing restless (already); a Senate run-off where his pull will be tested; a Democrat-turned-independent-turned-McCain-endorser whose future is being debated on the Hill; and, most pressingly, a series of financial matters that can’t wait for Jan. 20 to be resolved.

(And Gov. Sarah Palin is inviting in politics at every turn -- what, is she running for something?)

There will be many Barack Obamas, surely, over the course of his presidency -- the one of the first 100 days, the economic healer, the wartime leader, the manager, the speaker, the relationship-builder, the one who responds to unforeseen crises, and the one who (soon enough) gears up for reelection.

All of them could be defined in part by the pre-presidential Obama we’re seeing now. Just a week past Election Day, Obama is being asked to fill leadership voids all over Washington, and as he responds -- tentatively, for now -- he knows that he’s setting the tone for when it counts.

Behind the pageantry, the makings of a presidential-level standoff: “President-elect Barack Obama yesterday urged President Bush to support immediate aid for struggling automakers and back a new stimulus package, even as congressional Democrats began drafting legislation to give the Detroit automakers quick access to $25 billion by adding them to the Treasury Department's $700 billion economic rescue program,” Lori Montgomery and Michael D. Shear write in The Washington Post.

“Bush, speaking privately to Obama during their first Oval Office meeting, repeated his administration's stand that he might support quick action on those bills if Democratic leaders drop their opposition to a Colombia trade agreement that Bush supports,” they report. “The discussions raised the stakes for a lame-duck session of Congress that could begin next week and came as fears about General Motors' financial condition yesterday pushed the company's stock price to its lowest level in about 60 years.”

“A week after Mr. Obama’s election, and more than two months before he takes office, the steadily weakening economy and the prospect of many more job losses are testing his effort to remain aloof from the nation’s business on the argument that ‘we only have one president at a time,’ ” Jackie Calmes writes in The New York Times.

“As the auto industry reels, rarely has an issue so quickly illustrated the differences from one White House occupant to the next,” she writes. “How Mr. Obama responds to the industry’s dire straits will indicate how much government intervention in the private sector he is willing to tolerate. It will also offer hints of how he will approach his job under pressure, testing the limits of his conciliation toward the opposition party and his willingness to stand up to the interest groups in his own.”

“Mr. Obama's focus on the auto industry came as fellow Democrats on Capitol Hill started moving on their own to help Detroit gain access to federal rescue funds allocated for the financial sector,” Jonathan Weisman and John D. McKinnon report in The Wall Street Journal. “Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan said Monday that he is drafting legislation, aimed for quick passage, that would free up money from the $700 billion Wall Street rescue for Detroit auto makers careening toward seeking bankruptcy protection.”

Why doesn't Obama become president tomorrow?

It seems that so many people have put their hopes on him now but he can not act until January 20th.

Wow!!! Bush sounds like the Devil!!!

He will take as many down with him since he is leaving office in two months!!!

More people will be unemployed, companies will go bust and we must weather the storm a little while longer!!

Patience!!!!

January 20th will be here before we know it!!!

President Obama will not be too busy to pursue truth and justice.

Barack Obama knows that there is only one President at a time, however, that will not stop him from planning and working behind the scenes on how to keep his campaign promises and help this country find her bounty and greatness again.

The auto industry failed to up-date and change in to building better energy efficient vehicles. Now that gas soared, and people do not want to buy what they have to sell, why should we bail them out. They didn't care about anyone when they moved their manufacturing to China. Let them guarantee that all manufacturing will return to the USA, and guarantee production in different fuel run vehicles. Then we can discuss offering them money. We have nothing on the table right now to protect American interest our goernment is only protecting the elitists.

Only problem is, there are 2.5 million Americans working for the auto industry, that's who Obama's really worried about.

"The Note: Obama Challenged to Rule Early"

According to Valerie Jarrett.

Posted by: Grand Old Party | Nov 11, 2008 10:26:35 AM

Caroline, we have to hold our nose and bail them out because their collapse could cost about 3 million jobs altogether when we add in the related industries such as parts, tires, windshields, etc. The metals industry would be affected as well. I do think we need to attach some stringent rules. Unions will have to renegotiate their pension funds and management will have to redirect their production to more fuel efficiant cars and trucks. AND restructure their pay packages in return for a loan from the government.

Great comment Caroline. Sounds like sheer a common sense approach.

Change is not what it used to be. From WSJ:

---President-elect Barack Obama is UNLIKELY to radically overhaul controversial Bush administration intelligence policies, advisers say, an approach that is almost certain to create tension within the Democratic Party.

Civil-liberties groups were among those outraged that the White House sanctioned the use of harsh intelligence techniques -- which some consider torture -- by the Central Intelligence Agency, and expanded domestic spy powers. These groups are demanding quick action to reverse these policies.

Mr. Obama is being advised largely by a group of intelligence professionals, including some who have supported Republicans, and centrist former officials in the Clinton administration. They say he is likely to fill key intelligence posts with pragmatists.
"He's going to take a very centrist approach to these issues," said Roger Cressey, a former counterterrorism official in the Clinton and Bush administrations. "Whenever an administration swings too far on the spectrum left or right, we end up getting ourselves in big trouble."

Just more background noise which I'm sure Obama is capable of ignoring.

We heard it all through the summer of 2007. "Obama has to turn it up! Why is he waiting?"

Then when the time was right, he did make a move.

We heard it through the spring of 2008. "Obama can't close the deal!"

Except he knew it already was closed, and just needed for Clinton and her followers to realize it.

We heard it this summer as well, when the first blitz of McCain negative ads started. "Obama needs to respond more forcefully! He's losing the news cycles."

But again the time wasn't right, and he seemed to have no problem letting those nervous voices stew in their own anxiety and wait.

Don't see any difference now. Obama will approach things in accordance with the sense of timing he and his advisors determines will be most effective.

Candy, Candy, Candy....

We want candies from our Greatest Dearest Smartest Leader as he has always pushed stimulus candies to put our needs first.

Sherrie: You have asked why can't Obama become a President tomorrow.

Thats quite impossible. Always work starts when a person signs the contract
His contract begins when he is sworn-in, and thats Jan. 20th and not before
that date.

On the campaign trail, Mr. Obama criticized many of President George W. Bush's counterterrorism policies. He condemned Mr. Bush for promoting "excessive secrecy, indefinite detention, warrantless wiretapping and 'enhanced interrogation techniques' like simulated drowning that qualify as torture through any careful measure of the law or appeal to human decency."

I for one would rather wait until after the holidays before the terror, war and foreign Problems Esculate.

I was against all bail outs. The buisness and industry that have claimed problems and are receiving government money is wrong.

When a buiness is mis managed and fails it it the part of the CEO's and the people running the company.

The Democrats are bailing out and giving the wealthy a helping hand. Gaining controled interest in the companies and making a Fortune for them and their friends at the cost of the American People.

They had their finger prints all over these companies before the cry of problems. Then they pushed for bail outs of them. Pushing for more now.

So as the Wealthy friends of the Democrats, and probably some of them themselves are making a killing on America. As they kill America.

The Democrats well oiled Machine has planned this out for a very long time, they have been setting it up for years now.

They knew they had the prefect cover a lame duck president. To blame for it all. While they worked their dirty deeds.

The people of America, each and every Citizen. Needs to Wake up, take control of your senses and pay attention.

When Mr Obama Takes the oath of Office for President. That from that day forward he is Held Accountable to Uphold it.

That no excuse's will be accepted for anything with his oath. He is liable and Has to uphold it. It is a contract and binding Oath.

That if he tries to alter it, not uphold it, The people need to join together and Protest it. Demand The Supreme Court, All of Congress Not allow it.

"Your Country and your Freedom and your rights are Number one Priorty."

Etch that into your souls and your hearts and your minds.

With out those you have nothing

Obama Knows and has stated there is one President at a Time, unfortunatley Bush is still President but Obama is preparing and getting ready. He will be ready before Jan 20 And the changes will begin oh how sweet it is!

I think the headline is supposed to read "Obama Challenged to RULE early"

Posted by: Help | Nov 11, 2008 11:28:43 AM

I find it odd that the FEC is going to audit McCain campaign, but not Obama - I thought the Dems were for the fairness doctrine?

Posted by: jamescbuilder | Nov 11, 2008 11:30:11 AM

We have too many problems in this country. Obama should relax now because he won't have anytime to relax after January 20th.

Posted by: Kathy | Nov 11, 2008 12:46:43 PM

Whant ever President Obama decides to do is fine with me. I trust him a hell of a lot more than I ever trusted GWB. This is still GW's time right now. I know that he will continue to get things organized behind the scene and when it is his season he will step right into play. I am even willing to pay more taxes if it goes to assisting my country, and not stuffing the pockets of fat cats. Why is it that more loans are not being renegotiated by banks, mortgage, and finance companies? I think the he auto makers can reduce their prices for these over priced vehicles and more people would be happy to buy them. There is so much that can be done to help.
