Albright vs. Holbrooke Redux?
December 09, 2008 3:07 PM
ABC News' Kirit Radia reports: President-elect Barack Obama's intention to elevate the US Ambassador to the United Nations to a cabinet-level position pits Susan Rice, his pick for that job, squarely against Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton for influence over US foreign policy.
The possibility harkens back to the time of former President Bill Clinton, when then Secretary of State Madeleine Albright sparred with then-US Ambassador to the UN Richard Holbrooke, who also held a spot in the cabinet.
UN ambassador usually falls under the Secretary of State's jurisdiction, but Rice, like Holbrook in the 90's, may not see it that way … and there are signs she may take the unusual step of maintaining an office Foggy Bottom although her job is in New York.
The Obama transition team has been allotted 5,300 sq ft of office space in the State Department, but last week Rice opened her own separate office space in the building, taking over a largely empty office belonging to the department's Bureau of International Organizations, which oversees US relations with the United Nations, according to a State Department official speaking on background.
No word yet on if her staff is playing nice with the rest of the State Department transition team, but there are reports that Clinton will look to replace the transition team with her own staff.
The AP reports that though both Clinton and Rice were visiting the State Dept yesterday, they did not overlap and did not meet.
Though both were in Washington D.C. yesterday, one official told ABC News Rice did not meet with the current UN Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, who, by the way, is not in President George Bush's cabinet.

When Rice goes out and gets 18 million votes, she can afford to be demanding.
Until then, she needs to realize she is nothing but a supporting bit player in Hillary's movie.

I think it's wise to have a balance of power when it comes to Clintons.

Rice is clearly a brilliant and talented woman. But she needs to remember that Hillary is Secretary of State and that 18 million Americans wanted her as our President, equal to the number who wanted Obama. I just hope Obama has not set Hillary up here for a power struggle.

Sorry Ch and Chris, but Hillary lost period. Her 18 million votes mean absolutely nothing. Hillary Clinton serves at the pleasure of the president and it is his policies that she has to carry out. Hillary does not get to determine the chain of command for the US Ambassador Obama does.
Hillary and her people need to understand she is not the president and with the exception of the staff she chooses to select with Obama's approval these kinds of Clinton leaks will serve to only prove that Hillary is interested in her own power and agenda and needless to say she will not last long in the Obama administration. The Hillary can't be fired is a myth that she embraces at her own peril.

Ch and Chris, etc.
Obama won with 67 million votes, Hillary lost with her 18 million, to keep bringing her power is to keep her out of inner circle. If you want her to work with the inner circle (Obama, Biden, Jones, and Rice on Foreign Affairs) then you are advised to not shout any further and leave Hillary alone to try to do a good job, I hope she puts her talent to work for US. If she listened to you all, she will be out in no time with Bill.

Cool it guys! Why are you ratcheting up imaginary wars between two women who might, just might, get along well and, together, do something constructive for the US, which is in a gargantuan mess, both nationally and internationally? I think they're both very talented and capable women.

We can now see the wisdom of a 'Team of Rivals' and giving the UN Amabassdor position to Obama's friend.
Trouble.
Clinton and Rice have a long personal history with the Clintons bearing endless grudges against anyone who chooses someone else over one of them (Rice/Obama).
For those who keep mentioning that Clinton is unquestionable because she won nearly 18 million votes in the Democratic primary, they should learn more about government.
If your criteria were right, why not give the job to John McCain who got over 56 million votes?
The Secretary of State is a position for a super-qualified foreign affairs specialist not a dumping ground for failed politicians.
Rice is the specialist who will have direct access to the President as well as Clinton and is on the security team.
Rice has been given space at State by the Department at the will of the President-Elect and because she is perceived as one of them.
Clinton would want to keep her in New York.
Everyone on the security team has more experience than Clinton.
The only way Clinton will be controlling anything is with endless leaks from her incompetent personal staff (look at how they ran her election campaign).
We really do not need this nonsense.

while it is nonsensical to maintain that Clinton should get her way in an obama administration because of 18 million votes, it is similarly moronic to suggest that Clinton is an any way unprepared or unqualified for the job - better for you all to keep your mouths shut and save yourselves the embarrassment of showcasing your ignorance -

Who says this was Clinton leaks? Always blaming Clinton I see. Rice better watch her self and people talking about clinton hating people who go against her, why dont you ask Rice how she feels about her mentor albright who backed Clinton. Word is they aren't on good terms. If Obama set Hillary up it's all gonna come back to him. He's got enough to worry about with his state beign the most politically corrupt in the union and him beign so unware of it all.

I see the haters are out in full force today. Hillary WILL be the SOS suck on that you hateful bots and move on, qualification is no longer a talking point since we elected the most unqualified President ever so get over it.
Posted by: kim | Dec 10, 2008 9:12:17 AM
Rice is the UN ambassador. As such, her offices and staff should be in New York. NOT in the State Dept. building. My gut told me Obama was up to no good with this nomination. I just have to trust that Hillary thought it through and decided it was the best move for her at this time. Hang in there Hillary. Once Obama implodes from all the Chicago scandals we can try to get you into the WH in 2012.

Susan Rice looks like a female gangster!
Posted by: cspolj | Dec 14, 2008 3:05:58 AM
Barack needs Hillary in the cabinet so tha she can teach him how to run a government. Everybody knows that, even his supporters. Obots just like to pretend that he doesn't.

Barack better stop the leaks that are coming from Susan Rice and that other nut job Susan Powers.
