Does the U.S. Want a Ceasefire in Gaza?

ABC News' Kirit Radia reports: There appear to be some inconsistencies in the Bush administration's position regarding a ceasefire in Gaza.

Today, White House deputy spokesman Gordon Johndroe told reporters that the administration wants a durable and sustainable ceasefire that would begin only once Hamas stops firing rockets into Israel, saying anything less would not be worth the paper it is written on. He, at no point, called on Israel to halt its attacks on Gaza.

Johndroe parried questions on a proposed 48-hour humanitarian ceasefire and refused to take a position on how a cessation of violence could otherwise be reached.

On Tuesday, however, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signed on to a statement from the Quartet (the international group of U.S., E.U., U.N. and Russia that has attempted to mediate peace, but typically ends up bickering internally) that called for an immediate end to the violence on both sides.

Johndroe today denied there was any difference, saying: "The Quartet statement says an immediate cease-fire that is fully respected. I think those statements are very consistent. I've been talking about the need for Hamas to fully respect a cease-fire since Monday, or otherwise it won't be worth anything, no matter whether it's immediate or not. So we all want to see an end to the violence. It has to be a respected cease-fire. I think that we're all on the same page."

The US government has been hijacked by AIPAC and the Neocons. They tell the US what it wants in gaza (pretty much whatever Israel wants). They starve their Palestinian victims, then use their feeble resistance as an excuse to murder them and steal more of their land. And our tax dollars support this tradgedy. What a disgrace.

ummm,

/------
Uh yea the reason Hamas was bombing Israel in the first place is because ISRAEL came and stole their land, rounded them up, and quarantined them in a tiny strip of land and cut off their access to food and medicine. Hamas is a liberation effort. Know the facts before you judge people. If the Jews are so upset about the Holocaust why would they go and do the exact same thing to someone else a couple years later?? Jeez. Israel is a terrorist state.
------/

Nonsense. If the Hamas needed food and meds, they would have planted some seeds and made medicines instead of buying and making rockets. Its like the sob story the druggies and the alcholics use to lure you in just before they hit you over the head and rob you. Save it. Every country has a right to defend their citizens against those attacking it.

Israel is a crime against humanity. They’ve imposed a blockade on Gaza throughout 2008 — No Food, No Medicine, No Gas (what little gets in is $30/gal) — just starve and kill the people. Either the Palestinians accept or they get attacked for resisting their oppression. Israel is the foremost terror state… and we defend them in their theft and murder, but only because the US population is deceived. We send them our tax dollars making us complicit in their crimes. AIPAC and their media heavyweights own our government and our sports-obsessed electorate has no idea what’s going on.

Israel stole nothing. The land of israel was created at the UN. The Israelis did take land in the 67 war, like the land from which the syrians were shelling them. They didn't even crush the egyptian army as they easily could have done (they had them surrounded & cut off). But I think for some reason I don't understand they gave some of it back. The recent problems in the Gaza were only created when they foolishly pulled out of there.

I'm sorry Hamas is so stupid they want to go out & start a war with a nuclear-armed country. Bad move. But that's not my fault. The Israelis have the power to END Hamas at any time & are showing remarkable restraint in that regard. If it were my choice, I'd just do it. Such idiocy can not be allowed to survive and reproduce. Think of it as aiding the process of natural selection.

I get a kick out of those of you that think you are stating fact, i.e. "Israel came and took the land from the Palestinians." The territory known today as Israel or previously as Palestine has changed "ownership" many, many times over the years. Just prior to Israel being created after WWII by the winning Allies, it belonged to England (Great Britain) who fought the Ottoman Empire and took the land away from the Turks. If you think Israel "took" the land from the Palestinians you flunk your history lesson. There was no Israel. No Israeli army. The Jews were scattered to all corners of the globe. Now I'm far from being a blind supporter of Israel or any country other than our own, but ya'll need to learn not to take every chance to bash your own country and your fellow US citizens. Since America is still a free nation, remember, no one is keeping you here. Quit whining unless you intend to do something productive to make our nation even better!

....no, the U.S. does not own Israel. But we do arm them. Let them wage their twisted and self-righteous genocide on their own. This has clearly been a war of occupation and annihilition from the start. Israel doesn't want Peace. It wants Silence. Cut off international support for their war machine, and they may talk. At this rate, the Palestinians will be starved out or driven into the sea before any weak "resolution" passes.

tksquire....Just for the sake of trying to make sense out of what you are saying about the whole "genocide, occupation, annihilation, etc..." Are you by any chance a Muslim? Just wondering. Do you not know that Israel gave up land they used to occupy back to the Palestinians? Do you not know that Hamas started the current conflict by launching over 200 rockets into Israel during Hanukkah and refused to extend the Egyptian brokered ceasefire agreement? Where on earth are you getting your assertions/ It's confusing.

Let look at history and old maps of Israel and Palestine which will show who stole who's land. Israel working on greater Israel plan. No matter what any country is saying or doing these jews don't want peace. But you do know what God said Bible and Quran, Jews will be wonders of the earth. Whoever will try to help them, will go with them, resistance against got mean greater damage. Still did not get it? What's happening to US economy, jobs, bailouts, etc. ? The only things you will see coming out Israeli attacks is embarassement nothing more. But I feel sad that lot of human live will be waist. GOD HELP US ALL AND GIVE A PEACEFUL MIND! AMEEN

Well said Chief. The land that is now called Israel belonged to the Brits and it was the UN that gave it to the Jews.

I think that's fine. Remember Entebbe??The israelis can certainly take care of themselves. Let them go ahead without american weapons, but also without any words of restraint from America. I'd say Hamas would survive for about five minutes under such an arrangement.

The Brits had control which was wrested from them via zionist Israeli terrorists who blew up the King David hotel (ever heard of Menachem Begin?)...

Fact remains that the indigenous population of the region was 25% Christian, 3% Jewish and 72% Muslim living peacefully side-by-side in established villages from which they were run out by zionist terrorists -- who then annexed their land, and now aim to starve and murder them for resisting and wanting their land back.

SANDMAN, perhaps you need to read some history and understand how the Jews came to be systematically dispossessed of their land by the Muslims. Muslims do it all over the world. "Come as guests and then become owners" - how convenient.
Well before you call me any names, i remind you this is a religion that wants to kill/enslave NON-believers and a religion that wants a Caliphate with govts in the style of the Taliban. That is why the USa wants to be in the middle of the middle east- to protect humanity evntually.

Posted by: karen | Dec 31, 2008 11:27:06 PM

Elderman, you need to read history. The Jews owned the land they now own for centuries before Islam was born and were driven out. Britain did not legally own any land anywhere outside Britain. So saying British owned it at a timeline convenient to yourself is laughable.
Read post to Sandman above.

Muslims are monotheic and follow the ten commandments, teachings of Abraham, Moses and Jesus. They are instructed to fight to the death only in self defense, when their religion or property are threatened. So the Israeli theft of Palestian land and Bush's war on Islam should work very effectively to push the 1.6 Billion muslim world towards extremism.

It is interesting listening to all the Israeli supporters with the line what would you do if rockets were lobbed at you. I believe a greater question is would you launch rockets if you were fenced in with checkpoints, and a nation state was stealing your land and putting its own militant settlers on that land? Maybe Hamas has a legitimate beef. I believe what Israel is doing is criminal and our country is a partner in these crimes. 911 happened for a reason.

my feeling toward the jewish/palestinian conflict is this: hamas should be willing to peacefully negotiate with the jews. they are not winning anything, they can't win, they do not have the weapons to win in an all out war. they are stupid to believe they can wipe out israel. hamas should think first of its women and children and do the unthinkable: leave israel alone, try to live in peace and save muslims lives. the jews have a right to be there. the palestinians have a right to be there. the jews have not taken a vow to destroy the palestinians without being provoked. hamas want to destroy israel, and will never accept their existence. how can peace come to the middle east with the mindset that exist in the arab world. the united states has to support israel because it is a small country surrounded by trouble-making neighbors who wants to wipe them out. may God bless america and may God bless the middle east and all of the arab world.

Posted by: johnny gee | Jan 1, 2009 3:03:09 AM

johnny gee - Negotiate eh? Israel is slowly taking the land in the West Bank. There are over 1000 settlements with around 500,000+ settlers. What kind of negotiation do you envision? Maybe one where all Palestinians are huddled into Gaza? Israel is a bully and needs to be recognized for what they are.

The WaPo and Jerusalem Po reported a couple days ago that Israel's attack on the Palestinians was politically motivated. As a result, Israel should be charged with war crimes for the 400 defenseless, Palestinian civilians killed in that attack, and the vast destruction to Gaza. Israel has committed the very same crimes it accuses Hamas and Iran of committing.

The US is the real obstacle to getting a peace agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians. The US gives Israel cover for crimes and lies, and uses its veto power to prevent adverse action of the UN against Israel. The US should be removed from its position as Mediator on grounds of being a dishonest broker.

Posted by: marvenetta | Jan 1, 2009 6:39:55 AM

Israel has every right to pursue this action. No other country would put-up with rockets fired into its territory. Why should Israel? Protests against Israel show the bias and ignorance of public opinion. Hamas is not a government it is simply a "bully" organization financed by everyone but itself and has a singular goal: provide welfare with other people's money and make war against Israel.
