Double-Teaming Pakistan
December 22, 2008 4:19 PM
ABC News' Luis Martinez and Kirit Radia Report: In another sign of how importantly the US military is taking its relationship with Pakistan, the Pentagon announced that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen visited Pakistan earlier today for the seventh time since assuming the post more than a year ago and Pakistan's National Security Adviser Mahmud Ali Durrani, formerly the Ambassador to Washington until last May, was back in town last week for meetings with top US officials.
A brief statement released by Mullen's office says Mullen traveled to Islamabad earlier today and met with Gen. Ashfaq Kayani, Pakistan's Army Chief of Staff and Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, head of Pakistan's controversial Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency. It was Mullen's eighth meeting with Gen. Kayani.
According to the statement, "He thanked both men for their efforts -- and the efforts of the Pakistani. government -- to arrest members of Lashkar-e-Taiba and other extremist groups involved with the attacks in Mumbai." In his meetings Mullen "urged them to support judicial efforts to prosecute the cases fully and transparently."
Mullen's previous trip to Pakistan took place shortly after the deadly terror attacks in Mumbai, India that temporarily inflamed tension between India and Pakistan. His message on that last-minute trip was to urge military restraint by both sides and to encourage Pakistan to focus attention on the terror threat posed by Lashkar-e-Taibe (LET) in the eastern Kashmir border region, a terror group suspected of having received support in the past from the ISI.
According to the statement, Mullen "encouraged the Pakistani leaders to use this tragic event as an opportunity to forge more productive ties with India and to seek ways in which both nations can combat the common threat of extremism together."
Mullen visited Pakistan after having wrapped up his participation in a week-long USO Christmas tour of the United Kingdom, Germany, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, in this country, on Friday the Pakistani National Security Advisor met with top officials at the Pentagon and the State Department. Durrani met with Secretary, Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and Rice's top diplomat for the region Richard Boucher. At the Pentagon he met with Deputy Secretary Gordon England and Policy chief, Ambassador Eric Edelman.
According to a US official, Rice pressed Durrani for Pakistan to follow through on its rhetoric to fight terror in the wake of the Mumbai attacks. She told him that Pakistan needs to turn its words into actions. In other words, Durrani was told Pakistan needs to do more to crack down on terror networks inside the country.
The official disputed reports suggesting that Durrani was "summoned" to Washington.
Meanwhile, Centcom commander General. David Petraeus has presented a proposal that would create a $2.6 billion fund to help equip Pakistan's military buy better weapons and train for a counterinsurgency. The fund would be similar to those set up for Afghanistan and Iraq and allow Centcom the financial flexibility to provide arms and training on short notice to Pakistan's military. An initial payment of $400 million could be included in the war supplemental bill that will go to Congress early next year. The fund would be beyond the $6 billion in reimbursements the US has provided to Pakistan for military operations in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan since 9-11.

The biggest evil in the world today is the U.S. and it's foreign policy. If they really wanted to put an end to terrorist activities they would not be funding Pakistani military. The truth of the matter is U.S. wants to destablize India and prevent it from becoming a Super Power.

We can't deal in absolutes in these confusing times. It's all about doing things today to be in control in the future, to foresee the imminent dangers and act accordingly. That is what the US is doing but unfortunately every rise has a fall, you can't control things forever. I believe stronger civilizations and governments in the past have fallen. Ppl like Ron Paul are never allowed to take office and consequently the philosophy of controlling global events and processes to ascertain supremacy prevails. When will we learn that an interest-driven foreign policy would meet a deadly fate one day ?

What is the need to give Pakistan $2.6B to buy military equipmen to fight ragtag terrorists? Apparenlty, based on public information available, their own intelligence services and the military are the ones who created these terrorists and are still controlling them. Instead of military aid, what we need to do is to give a big kick in the butt to these Pakistani military to stop creating and supporting these global terrorists.

Most of the money given to Pakistan ends up with their Uniformed & Non-Uniformed Army operations, their training and equipment.
Some say Pakistan military is fighting against the Taliban militants in the Afghanistan border area, but the same people also say that they have the Brooklyn Bridge for cheap sale!
Media reports say that Pakistan has lost thousands of solders in their fight against the Taliban. And guess from who those reports come from? - from none other but the Pakistan Army & the ISI !
Guess what those masked 'Taliban' gunmen did after they burned/stole the Humvees in the American convoys? They finished the TV shoots and photo-ops, removed their masks, got into the bus and left for their Rawalpindi Army barracks.
US has funded Pakistan with Billions of dollars in the hope of buying their cooperation in the Afghan area and also asking for peace on the Indian border. Isn't it very satisfying 'to hope' and isn't it gratifying to think of the day's job thus done well? The sad truth is: One can't HOPE to BUY the confidence, loyalty, honesty or friendship from a CON-MAN.
The news most ignored by the media: The Indian people, who form the largest democracy, who historically have been a very placid group of people, as of now, finally have been driven to the very brink of their patience.
There is also a lesson from the Mumbai attack which our politicians will definitely and urgently ponder on. The long unconcerned population could & would suddenly turn hostile on the politicians themselves if their basic safety is threatened in such dramatic and violent episodes, repeatedly over the past few years. The voters, whether they voted for you or not, will suddenly turn hostile. Totally out of character. And this is the ultimate threat to a politician. Naturally, people who backed the ideas such as going easy on the perpetrates, both inside and outside the country will face the crux of the anger onslaught from the general public. In India already one top central politician and two top politicians in the Mumbai's state are forced out of power. More may follow.
As US continues to give Billions to Pakistan and continues to demand that India show more restrain, it has taken the people of India to their emotional breaking point. One can control only the politicians and get away with it only so far - only up to a breaking point. In such conditions even the Nuclear option could be the first and not the last option.
A global cop has to deliver justice, and not spoil a nation like a favored child with billions of dollars, latest arms, training and F16s. At the same time, tell the other kid to be calm and implicitly suffer carnage at the hands of the favored child. Surprisingly this goes on even if the intelligence reports say that the same spoiled child has been training, equipping and sheltering terrorists & their operations stateside.
Stranger than the 'Alice's wonderland'.

It is very unfortunate USA continues with this charade that "Pakistan" is an
"ally" in the "war against terror".
America can send in 100,000 more troops to Afghanistan, shed plenty of more American blood and trillions of dollars of American tax payer money. But US WILL NOT get any results until and unless it stops believing in the fantasy that Pakistan is an "ally" in the "war against terror". MOST OF PAK ARMY, ISI subscribe to pan-Islamic jihadi ideology, but presents a "moderate" faces of a few generals to America to collect American money. And then they use this money to buy weaponry against India, simulataneously sponsoring terrorism in India as in the recent Mumbai attack.
Alternate supply routes to NATO troops not going through Pakistan should be immediately implemented. Pakistan's army and ISI are playing a deadly double game and its population, despite living on dole from American and European "crusaders" has NO LOVE for America. Stop military aid to Pakistan ASAP if you want not to waste any more tax dollars and American blood.

===========================
Pakistan, is a blatant state sponsor of terrorism. The issue at the moment is not defusing the tension between India and Pak, but ensuring that terrorists who shot down and bombed unarmed civilians in Mumbai are brought to justice. Terror training camps should be eliminated. "Defusing" the Indo-Pak tension is of no use and will allow Pakistan to continue its terrorism and export terror to elsewhere in the world.

PAKISTAN IS A TERROR STATE THAT IS HELD TOGETHER BY ARMY AND HATRED AS WELL AS ISLAMIST IDEOLOGY. WE ARE DANCING WITH THE DEVIL HERE. DEMOCRACY WORKS IN SOCIETIES THAT VALUE INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY, PEACE AND PROGRESS. PAKISTAN/AFGHANISTAN ARE PSYCHOLOGICALLY NOT READY FOR DEMOCRACY AND ONLY UNDERSTAND VIOLENCE. Only real option - DISARM AND DISMANTLE PAKISTAN.

Let's be clear here that pakistan is a "terrorist state" and never have any illusion that it is going to be any different. We have made a grave blunder by suggesting in the international fora that "Pakistan is also a victim of terror." We should stop interviewing leaders from that country who mouth the same inanities that "you have not produced any proof."Let us not fall into the trap of providing proof to the culprits. More than 100 acts/attempts of terror recorded in the world since 9/11 have had their roots in Pakistan. More than 40% of the prisoners in Guantanamo are Pakistanis.
We should categorically, unambiguously, unequivocally boycott Pakistan in all aspects for a decade or more. Pakistan is the only territory in the world where an army has a whole country under its control. The state policy of Pakistan is terrorism and their single-point programme of existence is to destroy India.

With almost 30% of indian budget going towards it's army and in efforts to contain Pakistan, it is no surprise that the Indian Army is pitching for war. Else it may loose it under the economic downturn India is going through. It is time Indians saw how much it was costing the country and reduce the $27B budget (doubled in the last 5 years) which it can not afford any more. Put that money to improve the lot of the people.

Pakistan has two deadly political boundaries, one the Kashmir Himalayan ranges with India and the other is NWFP mountains with Afghan. The former is sheltering LeT terrorists(with ISI protection) who attacked Mumbai while the latter shelters Taliban and Al Quaeda.Afghan border is completely out of control while the Indian side border is kept completely sealed by the Indian army to prevent infiltration of Pakistanis.Pak Army is getting increasingly unpopular inside their nation due to their ongoing fight with the Taliban.
So the Indian conspiracy theory says that Pak army itself hatched the Mumbai terror plot so they can move their army from the Afghan to the Indian borders as nothing gives more pleasure to an average Pakistani than waging war with India.Given the pakistani army's criminal history any theory against them seems completely believable...

I cant believe US again planning to fund Pakistan Army with a 2.6 Billion fund!! Its been proven in the past that what ever aid they got is diverted against India.so now you wanna encourange them for their Mumbai killing with 2.6 B!!In another words you are sponsering them to kill Indians with your left hand while you put your right hand on Indian shoulders!! Ahh..cant believe you guys.

No one likes the Indians these days.Everyone loves to see them suffer in their economy.Chinese hate them.US hate them.Pak naturally. You should see how the Australians hate them in cricket.I don't now why. They are soft natured and hard working and also naturally on the receiving end of terrorism, surrounded by islamist separatists in the north west,Chinese in the north,Left wing terrorists in the East and LTTE in the south..Lol they are one among the powerful nations in the world-i meant by the economy and the cache of arms- in spite of all those surrounding troubles trying to bite them..

India is the grand daddy of all nations so relax and just watch the complex chess like Indian strategy unfold. Of course, there will be no war. But that does not mean that Pakistan will not be defeated.
Posted by: Surya | Dec 23, 2008 12:42:01 PM
Ali,
Can you please stop whining about Pakistan. No person with Common sense would say what you did after reading WORLD NEWS about how Pakistan supports terrorism.
Pakistan should be declared a TERRORIST STATE as it is...
I hate my religion now...
Posted by: Big Ali | Dec 23, 2008 2:15:11 PM
If the US wanted Pakistan to effectively deal with the terrorists, the easy path to get effective action would be to cut off the money faucet until the terror threats were squashed.
Posted by: Walter J Smith | Dec 23, 2008 3:33:24 PM
India is not attacking pakistan..just because they understand its like fighting with pig in mud. They enjoy it.
Jihadis want a war because they need to recruit more people.India would like to move strategically and bleed them silently!!

Pardon my borrowing a line from the 1st Clinton run, but it is indeed:
THE KASHMIR PROBLEM STUPID!
The sooner India, the world's biggest democracy (or so she claims) shakes off it's positive allergy to discussing this democratic issue (remember the Kashmiri plebisite?) the sooner the that WHOLE region and by extension, the West can be safer. Cosmetic CBM's hoping that the issue will be swept under the rug by the passage of time are a waste of time and money mahraj.... HELLO????
