New Details on US-Israel Pact to block Arms to Hamas
January 15, 2009 8:29 PM
ABC News' Kirit Radia reports: The United States and Israel are hammering out a deal late this evening that would guarantee U.S. support in helping to block arms shipments from reaching Hamas in the Gaza area as fighting between Israeli troops and militants there reaches the end of its third week.
Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni is on her way to Washington and could ink a sort of memorandum of understanding with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as soon as tomorrow.
Late this afternoon Rice hinted a deal was in the works, telling reporters "We are discussing with the Israelis and others what we can do to bolster the possibilities of getting to the durable cease-fire that we are all seeking."
"There are several elements to that and we are working with regional partners and also with the Israelis," she added, offering no details on the draft agreement.
The Director General of Israel's Foreign Minister Aaron Abramovitz met at the State Department with acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman to work on the details of an agreement.
Jonathan Peled, a spokesman for the Israeli Embassy in Washington, said the deal was several days in the works, and would be a "commitment for addressing in a concerted international way the prevention of smuggling arms into Gaza."
Israel is considering signing onto an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire, but has been concerned that a halt in fighting would only allow Hamas to re-arm.
This agreement with the US would, Israel hopes, add another layer of security to ensure that arms don't even reach the Egyptian border with Gaza, where underground tunnels have been used to smuggle weapons in.
Under the agreement, according to an Israeli official who spoke only on the condition of anonymity because the text has not yet been made public, the US would organize like-minded countries to use methods like interdiction to prevent arms from reaching Gaza.
The effort would be similar, the Israeli official said, to the Proliferation Security Initiative, which is an agreement among several countries to prevent sensitive nuclear technology from falling into the wrong hands. That agreement allows countries to interdict shipments at sea though to be headed for hostile elements.
The Israeli official said there have been preliminary talks with several European countries who are expected to sign on in support.
The official did not know if the incoming Obama administration had officially signed off on the proposed agreement, but said Israel is confident they will not back out of the deal once President-elect Obama takes office on Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for the transition team declined to comment when asked if the new team had been kept informed or agreed with the US-Israeli deal.
Livni is expected to leave Washington on Saturday, but an Israeli official said so far she has no plans to meet with members of the incoming Obama team.

What the Gaza concentration camp isn't working. Those tunnels are hard to detect. I find it interesting that Hamas was fostered by Israel to counter the PLO.

Another big lie. Hamas was fostered by Iran to try to create deterrence against Israeli attack - and to compete for leadership in the Muslim world.
Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran have done more to make the Palestinians in Gaza pawns to their fantasy of removing the Jewish state from the Muslim peninsula.
Egypt fires machine guns to keep the Palestinians in Gaza. Israel does more to feed Gaza than anyone else. But it is time to accept the reality on the ground.
There is no two-state solution. Obama should demand Saudi Arabia call off its opposition to Israel and end the state of war.
It is 60 years too late to try to create a Palestinian entity. Time does not go backwards. Face reality and move on.
No Arab state has the come to the defense of Hamas in Gaza or Hezbullah in Lebanon. Neither Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, or Egypt will cede territory to create a larger Palestinian state.
Gaza and the West Bank aren't big enough to constitute a nation state. They have no economy - other than jobs in Israel or welfare from the UN.
Face it. The war is over. Hamas is afraid to fight. All that is left is a propaganda campaign in the media - which does nothing to change reality on the ground.

"Israel and Hamas may currently be locked in deadly combat, but, according to several current and former U.S. intelligence officials, beginning in the late 1970s, Tel Aviv gave direct and indirect financial aid to Hamas over a period of years. Israel 'aided Hamas directly – the Israelis wanted to use it as a counterbalance to the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization),' said Tony Cordesman, Middle East analyst for the Center for Strategic [and International] Studies. Israel's support for Hamas 'was a direct attempt to divide and dilute support for a strong, secular PLO by using a competing religious alternative,' said a former senior CIA official."

DrDan2000 - Tell your Israeli friends to stop land grabs for settlement building. Maybe you can convince them to get rid of the checkpoints in the territories. Maybe you can tell them to stop the blockade of Gaza. Until those things happen the nonexistent economy of the Palestinians will be just that, nonexistent. Again, why do our tax dollars fund this cruelty?

I am astounded by one of the comments above that basically denies a Palestinian state.
Israel has repeated its mistakes throughout history (including biblical history) and the current incursion is no different. Israel's actions insure its eventual collapse. Their campaign against terrorists only creates new ones and it is a failed strategy that they want to drown the US in as well.
After you take away a man's home, livelihood, family, children and hope what do you expect him to do? If you give your enemies nothing to lose, should you expect anything but the worst from them?
Ron Paul is correct that Israel acts like our kid brother who spits in someone's eye then runs behind our leg to hide. At some point they have got to learn to fight their own battles and leave us out of it, living with the consequences of their decisions. And by the same token, we can't expect Arabs to love us while Israel uses our weapons to blow up their homes, mosques and schools.

MIguy - Ron Paul was right about this issue. Amazing that he was one of what 5 people in congress calling for a halt to this onslaught in Gaza. To bad the republican masses has neoconservatism stamped all over their you know what.

Reduce aid to Israel. Then they can engage in a fair fight with the Palestinians, who haven't got the luxury of the USA's deep pockets propping them up. Israel would be more willing to work for peace (instead of keeping Palestinians in squalor that breeds terrorists) and share the land (instead of "giving" land while continuing to build illegal settlements on it) if they were no longer the 300 pound bully in the region. Terrorists would stop targeting the US because they oppose our support of Israel, making US citizens safer. Not to mention the US could use that $3 billion/year ourselves right now. Do we want schools bombed with our tax money? How long will we continue to finance their endless fighting with neighbors? The total cost to US taxpayers has been $134,791,507,200 since 1949, or $23,240 per Israeli

To bad we used tax to another politic agenda.

How slick! Bush and Israel are putting another deal over on the American taxpayers before Obama takes office.
He would NOT dare overturn the deal benefitting Israel and tightening the borders on the Gaza and Palestine's concentration camp.
No hope for them.
Thanks Kirit Radia for pointing out that we are footing the bill for more Israeli war crimes.
Taxpayers need to stop all money and arms for Israel.

When there's lightning - it always bring me down
Cause it's free and I see that it's me
Who's lost and never found
I cry for magic - I feel it dancing in the light
But it was cold - I lost my hold
To the shadows of the night
There's no sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a Rainbow in the Dark
Do your demons - do they ever let you go
When you've tried - do they hide -deep inside
Is it someone that you know
You're a picture - just an image caught in time
We're a lie - you and I
We're words without a rhyme
There's no sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a Rainbow in the Dark
When there's lightning - it always brings me down
Cause it's free and I see that it's me
Who's lost and never found
Feel the magic -feel it dancing in the air
But it's fear - and you'll hear
It calling you beware
There's no sign of the morning coming
There's no sight of the day
You've been left on your own
Like a Rainbow in the Dark

Brother will kill brother
Spilling blood across the land
Killing for religion
Something I dont understand
Fools like me,who cross the sea
And come to foreign lands
Ask the sheep,for their beliefs
Do you kill on gods command?
A country thats divided
Surely will not stand
My past erased,no more disgrace
No foolish naive stand
The end is near, its crystal clear
Part of the master plan
Dont look now to israel
It might be your homelands
Holy wars
Upon my podium,as the
Know it all scholar
Down in my seat of judgement
Gavels bang,uphold the law
Up on my soapbox,a leader
Out to change the world
Down in my pulpit as the holler
Than-thou-could-be-messenger of god
Wage the war on organized crime
Sneak attacks,repel down the rocks
Behind the lines
Some people risk to employ me
Some people live to destroy me
Either way they die
They killed my wife, and my baby
With hopes to enslave me
First mistake...last mistake|
Paid by the alliance,to slay all the giants
Next mistake...no more mistakes|
Fill the cracks in,with judicial granite
Because I dont say it,dont mean I aint
Thinkin it
Next thing you know, theyll take my thoughts away
I know what I said, now I must scream of the overdose
And the lack of mercy killings
