Additional 4,000 Troops to Be Ordered to Afghanistan
March 26, 2009 10:14 PM
ABC News' Luis Martinez reports: As part of the Obama administration's Afghan strategy review to be unveiled on Friday, an additional 4,000 troops will be ordered to Afghanistan to help train the Afghan army and police, defense officials tell ABC News.
While the troop announcement may be it for this year, it's possible that even more troops will be headed to Afghanistan in 2010.
Last week, a senior administration official told ABC News' Martha Raddatz that by the end of August the total U.S. troop strength in Afghanistan will stand at 64,000. This official added that it was unlikely any more troops would be sent to Afghanistan this year beyond the additional trainers to be announced Friday. There are currently 38,000 US troops in Afghanistan.
However, it's possible that the troop strength in Afghanistan could rise even higher next year, possibly to as many as 70,000 U.S. troops, as the Pentagon meets additional troop requests from military commanders in Afghanistan, another defense official said today.
That includes an additional combat brigade that top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. David McKiernan, would like to employ in southern Afghanistan and possibly more trainers needed to train a planned doubling of the Afghan army's size. Both the combat troops and trainers would require additional support troops known as "enablers."
The 4,000 trainers are in addition to the 17,000 troops that President Obama announced in February he was sending to Afghanistan this spring and summer. They will come from a combat brigade the Pentagon had slated in the original request for extra troops made by McKiernan. However, they were not included in February's announcement for additional troops. At the time, the White House said any further troop deployments would depend on the results of the Afghanistan strategy review.
The deployment of the training brigade meets a long-standing request for 4,000 trainers to help the Afghan army and police, that Pentagon officials had hoped would be met by NATO countries.
However, the need for more trainers may grow next year with the planned doubling of the Afghan army's size, so it's possible that more trainers might be needed beyond those to be announced Friday.
If that's the case, there will be a need for more enabler troops to support those extra trainers.

When will these fools learn, I know never. We will never be able to force the world to be like us, hell what we have doesn't even work for us.Hey isn't it about time for us to invade Nam again ? Are you scared? like Fox's Brian Killme and John Gibson, then just close the border instead of wasting young american lives and trillions of tax payers money. What did The U.S. receive for freeing Kuwaite, nothing in fact they vote against us with OPEC. What will we receive for Iraq after spending trillions and wasted lives, nothing. And Afghanistan nothing. And we give evey country in the middle east money not to kill each other since Carter for what, nothing. Get smart America, support Ron Paul.

"What did The U.S. receive for freeing Kuwaite, nothing ... And Afghanistan nothing... Get smart America, support Ron Paul."
Afghanistan directly supported and sheltered a paramilitary group that inflicted the worst mass murder on American soil since Pearl Harbor. If you and Ron Paul cannot see why the war in Afghanistan was a legitimate exercise of the most fundamental purpose of a government, then you are both fools with no knowledge of the most basic of governance principles.

Why, they will just continue in some
other country. Al Queda will always be
here. If not in Afghanistan then another
country. Get smart find another solution.
Wars never solve anything just take lives.
It is our brave soldiers who must endure
this madness of the world.
God help us.

Send Bush over there and take care of
this mess he made. He took his eyes off
the ball, started a war with a country that never touched us. If Al Queda has
grown and become even more dangerous to
us it is the Bush Administration for
them doing so.
Stop being Republicans and destroying
the United States of America.
Republicans talk about the right of life
but you are hypocrites. You care about
the unborn but what about the living.
What about the innocent people of these wars? What about our soldiers. Are their lives worth nothing.
Where was the justification of the Iraq
War. Lies that is all.
Wake up for America!!!

I'm not judging all Republicans but
Come On Bush was a terrible President
for this country. Cheated his way
in the first time and voted in a second time. United States of America did not
deserve what Bush and his Administration
has done to this great country.
Until Republicans are true Blue:):)
The USA is only half of what it could be.
Red White and Blue but mostly Blue:)
Obama/Biden for America.
Yea!!! USA!!!

I have severe reservations about President Obama's new strategy for Afghanistan and his apparent misunderstanding of the threats to the free world. Al-Qaeda is NOT the only terror organization with global reach, but if you listen to his comments, you would think that they were. Terrorism has gone hi-tech and is either supported or indirectly allowed to operate by many nations, some of those are in Southwest Asia. His commitment is too small and his single-focused policy on Al-Qaeda, will come back to haunt us. The worst in Iraq is in his rearview mirror, but if he allows the gains there to be lost and other terror groups around the world to go unchecked, we will pay a heavy price, either here or other places we thought were safe for travel or business. If he thinks his administration is going to bring "words" to a gun battle, he will surely lose...and so will we. He has a lot on his plate and I respect the tough decisions he has to make, but I think the advisers he is getting most of his guidance from are not the ones qualified to make the decisions. It appears that the military commanders in charge in Afghanistan and Iraq are not the primary source, inspite of what he tells us.

Suzi,
Interesting that people like you are STILL whining about the 2000 election. With all your bitchin about Bush, HE kept this country safe after 9/11. I do not for a single second believe the same would be true if Al Bore had won in 2000. He would have needed a week after the attacks and half a dozen opinion polls before he could have formulated a single sentence for the nation to hear.
As far as "blaming" Obama, are forgetting the constant rant we heard every day at every campaign stop last year? ... 10 Billion dollars a month for the war in Iraq... OVER & OVER & OVER. So what is the cost per month going to be for Afghanistan? AND WHAT IS THE EXIT STRATEGY??????
Strange how that is all we heard from Dems about Iraq for years. Bush went in with no exit strategy!...SO What is Obama's????
I am not against doing what is required in Afghanistan, but I want to hear the lefties voice their same issues with Afghanistan as they did with Iraq!

jhw539 - It was a legitimate operation, now it is just a waste of lives and money. Remember Bin Laden hit us because of our overwhelming support for Israel in light of Palestinian suffering and our sanctions on Iraq unde Clinton which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. There are of course other reasons, but Bin Laden points to a few as justification for the attacks on 911. What does this all mean. It means Ron Paul was correct in his assertions, and you are misguided.

jhw539 - I will say it again...bankers who commit fraud, drunk drivers, MS-13, Americans lack of science and engineering graduates, our buying of junk we can't afford are much greater threats than Bin Laden. The money we have spent on these two wars could have built many new skyscrapers. Ron Paul is awesome!

jhw539 - Oh ya and we are broke. Can't afford these military escapades without money from China or money printing.

with this kind of situation, careful decisions must be made by the president. their administration must look at all the angles and the consequences of every action and decision that they will make. we can't afford to have another mistake from a president.

Bush has not kept us safe.
If so why are we still in war and trying
to find Bin Laden. Because Bush does not
care never did. It was all about money
to Bush and his Administration. Funny
how all those hijackers were from Saudi
Arabia. Not Iraq. Who is Bush's family
close to that's right Bin Laden's.
Money grabbing Bush's.
Wonder what deal Bush made to keep Bin
Laden running and safe.
Any answers??
What a huge mess Bush has made and you
want to blame Obama. Oh please.
Innocent lives for Lies.

I with Lou Dobbs, Bring home our troops
and let them guard our Borders and our
water ways. Spend the trillion dollars
on the Border, that is where our problems
lie. Frankly I don't see us getting anything done on these wars. Except
more deaths. God Bless our Troops.
The Border is where we should put our
money and our troops. To really keep
us safe in this country.
I'm tired of my tax dollars going on
wars that I don't see and end in sight.
This is not a Republican or Democrat
fight this is all our fight for our
safety and security. Secure our
Borders Now.

Why is it that Liberals view the military as solely being just another program for government welfare?
Most of these people join to destroy America's enemies. They know when they're out there on the rifle range during basic that they aren't getting ready to take out pesky squirrels or crows in cornfields.
Sure, there are the Private Benjamin types who see the military as a job and a career opportunity, but to most of them that's secondary.
Why is it that the Leftists complain about money when there aren't daily GI casualty reports to capitalize on, and if it's not that, they're complaining about Muslim terrorists being killed, and if they aren't being killed, then they complain that nothing is being done about the terrorists and it's a waste of time!
Hopefully, most Americans can see through the Communist BS, smoke screens and propaganda, and realize that what is bad for America is good for them and provides a toe hold for the Marxists.

For starters, Presiden Clinton had the option of taking Osama Bin Laden out in 1998 or 1999. We had informants on the ground that confirmed his location and he called it off. To blame Bush or anybody on the mess that is Afghanistan, is wrong. I believe that he (Bush) was trying to do the right thing, but was distracted by his personal feelings to oust Saddam at a time when he should have been more focused on one front. (Remind you of another war anyone)?
Regardless of who was president in 2001, we would have been attacked. Our economy was doing well, times were definately different. That was my "1950's" for me. Then in a flash it was changed. For those who sympathize with or enemy, shame on you. They wouldn't think twice to kill you in the name of Islam. (or to better state... their perverted twisting of the religion). All I'm saying is that we need to come together as a country, the America I knew 10 years ago. Don't read into the hype the media puts out, they want us to be distracted from what is really happening. Start making decisions based on your beliefs...not because someone has told you you're supposed to feel that way, or it's the "cool" thing to do at the moment. We are a country that has endured hardship, financial crisis, a civil war and we came together to confront it as one nation. Our ancestors immigrated here to provide a better life for their families, to make something of themselves, to live the American dream. What is that you ask? It was different for everyone who travelled here from abroad. Past, present and future. Why can't we do the same?
