Clinton Hits Wrong 'Re-Set' Button With Russia

Radia_2 ABC News' Kirit Radia reports: The Obama administration has said it wants to "reset" relations with Russia, which have again become strained in recent years, but an attempt to illustrate this was sidetracked by a translation error.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented her Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, with a gift to mark their first meeting in Geneva today: an actual button that said "reset."

Or so she thought...

"I would like to present you with a little gift that represents what President Obama and Vice President Biden and I have been saying and that is: 'We want to reset our relationship and so we will do it together,'" Clinton said, presenting Lavrov with the red button.

What the foreign minister got, however, was a button that said "peregruzka," which translates into Russian as "overcharge" or "overload" (depending on the context). Oops...

"You got it wrong," Lavrov teased Clinton, but said he would put it on his desk anyway.

Nevertheless, the two pressed the button together, and only time will tell if the mistranslation is in fact a canary for future relations.

Translation gaffes are nothing new. President Kennedy famously declared himself a jelly donut standing in Berlin. President Carter's translator, wishing to express the commander in chief's enthusiasm upon arriving in Warsaw, mistakenly told the stunned Poles that Carter would like to make love to them.

Perhaps Secretary Clinton is looking for the Staples "Easy" button right now as she tries to fix this one.

You need to hear this. Her voice. Shrill and whiney and so monotone. I feel so sorry for anyone that has to listen to it.

On her button thingy, dumb. She should have just said "have no fear, Clintons here" and gave them any secret they wanted, just like the old days.

How embarrassing, though not quite as bad as Obama's tacky gift to Gordon Brown. The Brits are having a field day over that one.

I did listen to Hillary on NPR this morning being interviewed by Michelle Kellerman. She was excellent, answered questions thoroughly and was quite direct and concise. She has a strong voice. What an excellent Secretary of State she makes. I hope she continues the progress she has made and wish her all the best. We are lucky to have her representing the USA.

Kristie - shrill and whiney? You mean Sarah Palin is our Secretary of State???? Somebody help!!!

Posted by: geecee | Mar 6, 2009 3:47:13 PM

Oh, and monotone? Then it must be McCain who is Secretary of State. No one is more monotone than that drone!

Yes, Kristie....you're right: Please can we have "Cold War" Condi back so we can keep slapping all of our allies in the face? I miss the bomb shelters and the pounding of shoes.

First impressions are so important. It's great Hillary let the Russians know right off the bat they are dealing with a crew of freshly minted idiots in our new and improved state department. The Russians and all our enemies are extremely happy they now longer have to deal with the Bush-Cheney crew.

So here is the Russian Foreign Minister with Shrillary.

All he hears is "blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah"

He looks down because Shrillary hands him a button.

He reads the button and is says "overload"

Imagine what is going through his mind at that instant.

An innocent mistake. At least the current admin is trying to talk "to" the Russians rather than talk "down" to them. It's the effort that counts and it doesn't sound like it was lost on Mr Lavrov either.

You didn't think it was possible for Hillary to fit both feet in her mouth, well, she did.

Kinda reminds me of President Ford's Wip Inflation Now (WIN...get it? ) buttons. Stupid then. Stupid now.

It is hard to believe that US State Department could not (even after: "We worked hard to get the right Russian word…”) to come up with the correct translation.
Makes me wonder what can they really do right?
By the way, the Russian word “Peregruzka” means OVERLOAD or RELOAD not OVERCHARGE and the word “RESET” in its short version translates into Russian as “Sbros” .

Hillary Clinton would have made an outstanding president and now is making an excellent Secretary of State. This country is luck to have her. I don't understand the shrill, hateful rhetoric that Republicans (particularly men), hurl her way. It's almost irrational. By and large, the years of the Clinton administration were Camelot when compared to the post-apocalyptic Mordor of the Bush administration.

Geecee,
Respect? Do you mean respect like when Obama reached out to the Iranians, and they told him they'd agree to talk after HE apologized for our "crimes against the Iranian people," and told the world Obama's request to talk was a sign of our weakness?"

Or do you mean respect like when Obama told the Russians last week he'd cancel the missile shield we promised our allies if they stopped helping Iran obtain nuclear weapons, and the Russians told him to get lost?"

Barack, Hillary, Biden and co. traveling the world groveling and begging for approval doesn't get you respect, it gets you contempt, from everbody. These clowns are gonna get steamrolled. The world could care less about our "mutually beneficial pregrams," whatever that sort of liberal drivel means.

We are still beating Dan Quayle for "Potatoe". However, when Hilary faux pas in front of a major foreign minister it's just silly boo-boo and we'll never hear of this again.

Wow humility towards Russia and China. Kind of happens when your country is broke and on the decline. Ron Paul had humility even when we were on top. Too bad it takes an economic collapse to make us polite to other nations not emulating us.

If there consequences of this administration's actions weren't so damaging to our country, our economy and our society, it would be absolutely hilarious. Unfortunately they are killing our country internally as well as making complete fools of themselves to foreigh governments.

I just wonder when and where the stupidity being committed by these politicians in DC will stop? Good Lord, I thought we were voting for change and a new way of doing things, but I guess once a pack of buffoons, always a pack of buffoons (yes I am referring to spending bills, throwing money at failed banks and businesses, tax cheats, earmarks, et al). Misusing a word in Russian pales in comparison even if it is embarrassing.

"Barack, Hillary, Biden and co. traveling the world groveling and begging for approval doesn't get you respect, it gets you contempt, from everbody. "

That opinion makes a good slogan for rallying republican base but is not based on facts. The world public opinion has very high respect about what you call "groveling and begging" ,which is actually normal consulting with other countries in areas where we need their collaboration anyway. BTW, using the cowboy rhetoric in foreign politics was the ONLY mistake George Bush has ever admitted to make.

So you actually think groveling and begging are effective ways to gain support from other nations? I'd like to know what color the sky is in your world.
