A Tornado Destroyed Their Homes, FEMA Betrayed Their Trust

March 15, 2007 9:48 AM

It was Saturday, FEBRUARY 24th when a batch of very severe storms and a tornado struck 4 counties in the southern part of Arkansas.  Nearly 150 homes were either destroyed or badly damaged.  Scores of people were sent to the hospital and several businesses that employed 800 people in a rural community of 5,000 were ruined.

NO ONE DIED but families who lost everything had no place to stay.

That should not have been a problem.  Down the way, some 180 MILES, just a 3 HOUR DRIVE, were 8,420 "FULLY BRAND NEW, FULLY FURNISHED FEMA TRAILERS" sitting unused in HOPE, Arkansas.

On TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27th Arkansas Governor Beebe asked for federal help and along with his congressional delegation in Washington begged FEMA director DAVID PAULISON to send in 150 of those UNUSED TAXPAYER PURCHASED TRAILERS.

NOTHING HAPPENED.

On WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28th the congressional delegation sent president bush a letter backing up Governor Beebe's plea for federal help and on MARCH 1, MARCH 2, and MARCH 3 there were more phone calls and letters to FEMA asking for money and some trailers.

NOTHING HAPPENED.

On TUESDAY, MARCH 5th, Arkansas Democratic Reps. Mike Ross, and Marion Berry took to the HOUSE FLOOR  and showed pictures of the destruction and the unused trailers parked in hope.  They hand delivered letters and pictures to the PRESIDENT, FEMA DIRECTOR PAULISON and DHS SECRETARY CHERTOFF.

NOTHING HAPPENED.

On WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6th, there were more 1 minute speeches on the house floor, more photos, more pleas.

BUT AGAIN NOTHING HAPPENED.

Finally on SATURDAY, MARCH 9th, TWO WEEKS AFTER THE STORMS,  23 mobile homes and 7 travel trailers left hope headed to the homeless in rural Arkansas.  BUT THERE IS MORE.  State and local officials had to pay to have the trailers moved.  WHY?  FEMA turned down Beebe's request for federal help saying most of the destroyed and damaged homes were insured and the state of Arkansas had a BUDGET SURPLUS and could use that money to help their own.

This afternoon FEMA officials will face an angry Bennie G. Thompson who now chairs the House Homeland Security committee.  He has invited Arkansas Congressman Ross to sit in even though Ross is not a member of the committee and Arkansas Governor Beebe will also be there.

So, if I have insurance I can still get a Fema trailer? Wish I new that during Hurricane Andrew!

We all know that FEMA is a screwed up agency. But the question remains of how to fix it. We need a total overhaul that will start with the very basics. We are still dealing with Fema over Hurricane IVAN. After we fixed our roof Fema said that they over paid us. My husband is disable and we have 3 kids I have no idea where they think we are going to get the moneys to refund to them what they concider and over payment.

As a victim of Hurricane Ivan, and a resident of a FEMA trailer for almost 18 months while my home was repaired, I hate to say it, but FEMA money/benefits are not typically for insured homes. My mother-in-law's home was condemned the day after Ivan because a tree fell throught the entire length of her house, and her and her family were in their backyard in TENTS, and FEMA told them they couldn't help them because they were insured, and would have to wait for their insurance companies to act.

Who do I need to write to about this mess? and how do I get their e-mail addresses? Thank you for your bringing this to everyone's attention. What a waste of our money!

Even though the content is undoubtedly correct, maybe the author of this article should find out what should be capitalized - like the name of our worthless president.

PLEASE! Someone "fix" FEMA!! ENOUGH! Thanks to the reporters at the Washington Post the government is "fixing" (hopefully) the problems with the VA hospitals. It's more than PAST TIME to "fix" FEMA. President Bush--where are you? Why aren't you dealing with this issue NOW?

This isn't an isolated incident. Do the American people really think their government will really save them? You're a fool to think local, state or federal gov't monkeys could help you in a disaster. You've been brainwashed into believing that 9/11 "hero" crap.

Where do I apply for the job of FEMA director...I grew up on the Texas Gulf coast and there is no way I could screw things up worse than they already have been...When hurricane Carla hit, the red cross was there almost immediately...that's the way things should be done. Help after you are broke from staying in motels and eating out is pretty poor form. These people need a sense of security, not more insecurity and fear of the government agencies meant to help them.

Corruption from the president to the postal system. Why is there no public accounting of monies allocated and spent on the aftermath of natural disasters? Because the friends and cronies of the politicians took large amounts of it, and now try to squeeze the very last pennies from the victims with instantly concocted rules, like kids do at the playground; "hey, no fair, you hop-scotched on the left foot, right feet only" Time to start arresting the felonious carpetbaggers who call themselves our government. 25 to life, and capital if above half a million

Every taxpayer is sick of this type of abuse of "the system". FEMA is just one agency that needs reforming. If the government can't/won't/shouldn't help its citizens when disaster strikes - cut off the agencies completely and refund the money to the taxpayers....yah right - that's gonna happen!!

Posted by: Nancy | Mar 15, 2007 1:43:17 PM

Once again were all reminded that Bush and his cromies care more for themselves and their special interests than they do the citizens of the US. Natural disasters are just political opportunities to have your picture taken, showing that you "care". The pumps newly purchased for New Orlean's that don't work, bought from a former friend of Jeb Bush's, the unused trailers, the pal of George's, Alberto the list goes on and on. Slowly I am becoming disappointed in being an American, so much cover up, so many people is disterss and hurting. What is most important to Bush is his usless war in which he devotes all his attention and money, for this is where his legacy is going to be made, and if he fails there, his reputation will be ruined. Well the common man/woman of the US already know the truth, it's time the rest of the world did as well.

Thanks for the new release! great work as always!
Keep up the work and I will be looking forward for your next release! ;)

Having been through 4 hurricanes myself (the eye of 3 of them), I'm on the fence on this one. On one hand, seeing how many people took govt. assistance that did not NEED assistance made me sick. People need to get off their lazy backsides and learn to be much more self-supportive and stop looking for govt. hand outs for every little inconvenience. On the other hand, when a disaster of this type occurrs how dare we not jump to the aid of any honest hard working family unfortunate enough to loose their home to a disaster such as this. I pay taxes and I DO want some of that money used to put a temporary roof over their heads until they're on their feet again! Shame on FEMA for dragging their feet.

Posted by: Matt | Mar 15, 2007 2:03:28 PM

The real question should be what is the level of disaster that an agency should be responsible to respond to and what should be handled on a state or local level. While it is tragic that these people lost their homes, it certainly does not rise the level of many other natural disasters. Do we need for Fema to provide houses to the people who had their homes burn in California, or a single family that has had their home rendered un-livable in a bad wind storm? If FEMA is to be expected to supply a free mobile home while you re-build even when you are insured, why should any of us worry? Big-brother will step in and take care of us...Why didn't we send travel trailers to people without power in the mid-west after the ice storms, at least they could have used the propane tanks to provide heat, cooking and refrigeration.

Looks like this reporter FOUND OUT HOW TO USE THE CAPSLOCK KEY. Seems like he REALLY WANTS TO EMPHASIZE SOME THINGS.

But the final quote - '"Brownie" is gone but FEMA REMAINS A COLD HEARTED, SCREWED UP AGENCY!' - is this supposed to be some NEW STANDARD IN JOURNALISM?

Just like typical libs. You are no better than the Bolsheviks who created chaos in Russia and then blamed it on the Czar to have him ousted so they could overtake the country and create a COMMUNIST STATE! What about the corruption of Sen. William Jefferson who had thousands of dollars in his fridge which he had to retrieve with a sizable force of National Guardsmen to protect him when the people of New Orleans needed the National Guards help? Now he's in the Department of Homeland Security?! What about Sandy Berger and his theft of Top Secret documents?

You report of all the failures of society

Lesson learned here is that YOU CANT DEPEND ON THE GOVT TO TAKE CARE OF YOU PERIOD!!! STOP BEING CHILDREN AND GROW UP! TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES AND BE PREPARED FOR DISASTERS THAT CAN HAPPEN IN YOUR HOMETOWNS!!! YOU ARE IN CHAREG OF YOUR OWN DESTINY, NO ONE ELSE IS REPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MISTAKES AND POOR LACK OF JUDGMENT!

You talk of making people free and equal, yet you enslave and divide the people in your words of distrust of our nation and racial overtones.

Where is the news of all the GOOD people have done to help these people?

Whats next? Are these Tornado's going to be blamed on Bush and HIS GLOBAL WARMING FACIST VIEW??? Tony Blair said that the battle to fight Global Warming is compared to the fight of Nazi Facism in WWII? WHAT? Is every man, woman and child who lives on this earth a facist now for POLLUTION??? Give me a break! The Polar caps on Mars is melting and it has a atmosphere of 95% CARBON DIOXIDE! Whats is causing that? The Mars rovers?

As General Patton put it best:

Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack.

What has happened to this country that my father died serving, to a country that I teach my children to love and respect? We need to take care of these victims. All this government paper chase and high paychecks has to stop. These elected officials have got to be held accountable, and if not, open those gates so that caring citizens like my family can get a trailer and truck and move those homes to these people. Even if we had to work all night, the citizens of this country would do it and not ask where is the money coming from. 25 to life, is absolutely right, When is the White house going to get out of there comfort zone and help the american, tax paying citizens?

The end does not justify the means. Getting people riled up with
an article full of misinformation (which is also very poorly written)
is a low blow. FEMA's website says that assistance is provided for
uninsured losses. This article states that "most of the destroyed
and damaged homes were insured". FEMA definitely has problems,
but crap articles like this are not the way to bring about change.

My husband and I just went down to Hope to pick up a trailer that his boss bought on line - a 33' Fleetwood for $12,000. The place has to be seen to be believed! News photos don't do it justice. We were told we couldn't bring cameras in - they held 2 cameras we had in the truck til we came out. Security is very tight (are they expecting a trailer raid???) All the people working there - Fema employees -are from far away and have to stay there for months - like they were in the army - with only short leaves home. They were very nice but very defensive about all the good they are doing. They said they sent 2 trailers to New Mexico and a couple somewhere else - which, believe me would not even be a drop in the buckett compared to all the trailers there. It is so sad.

Posted by: Marilyn | Mar 15, 2007 3:04:17 PM

What a joke. This is America at its finest. Why would anyone think to use the trailers? I can tell you why becuase as the American people were scrambling like roaches in the middle of huricane katrina Bush was home safely in his warm, air conditioned house planning his next trip to camp.

Posted by: ROBIN | Mar 15, 2007 3:17:09 PM

Why don't Bush give up his presidency and maybe everything will be back to normal!

Posted by: lucky | Mar 15, 2007 4:10:41 PM

Why don't you people take it to the source? Your Congressmen and Representatives are the ones who made the law, not FEMA, not DHS. They can only do what the law says they can. Look it up, the Stafford Act.
Wake up America! You're lucky to get a dime. What did people do 60, 70 years ago? They took care of themselves. They didn't whine and moan. They WORKED and they REBUILT, ON THEIR OWN.
Enough FEMA blasting. Blast your representatives.

Posted by: Texan Pen | Mar 15, 2007 9:32:59 PM

Some of you people are pathetic. You want to blame every thing on the president no matter who it is. Like he has the time to deal with every little problem that occurs. What, you expect him and the secret service to come down and hand deliver the trailers and needed supplies? Blame needs to be directed at the specific individuals who are responsible for overseeing and responding to these disasters. FEMA does have some problems. However, the major problem with government funding is that people have come to expect the gov to pay for every little thing and then happily take the money even when they don't need it.

Posted by: Doc4404 | Mar 16, 2007 12:01:34 AM

If you have homeowner's insurance, you have nothing to gripe about in this case. Unless your insurance company is lame. So don't be placing the fault entirely on the government.

Posted by: Mark | Mar 16, 2007 1:58:11 PM

Yes we are a sore country to let good people go homeless a disaster is a disaster no matter what. At what time do you say eneough is eneough when does it all end ( the money ) People from Katrina are still getting rents paid after almost 2 years. Don't you think that they should be back to some normalcy like paying their own way by now Fema is designed to help you return to your normal lives not be a way of life. I was in Katrina we lost everything but we were determined to return to our lives and now yes I am back in N. O. with all the prices sky high but that's life get off you ass go to work and then maybe everyone else who happens to be in a disaster can get help !!! But in all fairness sham on my government for allowing this to happen to AMERICANS !!!!
