Subpoenas Here, Subpoenas There, Tons of Subpoenas Everywhere
April 25, 2007 8:52 AM
at 10am democrat patrick leahy will gavel a judiciary committee meeting to order and among the items on the agenda is expected to be authorization for a subpoena for a deputy assistant to the president. since he became chairman, leahy has asked for subpoena authorization several times as his committee continues its investigation into the justice department firings of several u.s. attorneys.
a short time later, 15 minutes later to be exact, leahy's house counterparts will hold their own business meeting to authorize subpoenas and ask for court-ordered immunity for monica goodling who resigned last month as the justice department's liaison to the white house.
and then there's henry waxman. the california democrat who became famous for hauling the cigarette makers before his committee many, many years ago and forcing them to raise their right hands and swear to tell the truth, is now holding a series of high profile oversight hearings like yesterday's powerful session featuring pat tillman's brother, mother and jessica lynch.
this morning waxman will ask his committee for authorization to subpoena secretary rice to tell congress about the niger uranium intelligence fiasco, authorization to subpoena former white house chief of staff andrew card over his role in the valerie plame case and the authorization for a subpoena to get RNC documents showing whether or not GSA administrator lurita dorn improperly used her agency to help republican candidates.
if the committee fails to give chairman waxman the subpoena power he wants, he could issue subpoenas on his own, a power left over from the days of republican control when then chairman dan burton issued a record 1000 subpoenas as he investigated clinton administration scandals.
obviously waxman has a long way to go to match or meet that record, but the democrats are back in control on capitol hill and oversight is back in style.
