The NRA Supports the Right of Suspected Terrorists to Buy Guns

May 07, 2007 9:04 AM

It took two years but on April 25th, 2007, embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales finally decided it was a no-brainer.  He threw his support behind bill S. 1237, the "DENYING FIREARMS AND EXPLOSIVES TO DANGEROUS TERRORISTS ACT OF 2007" and its author democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J. promptly introduced it the next day.

But just five days after Gonzales signaled his support, the NRA fired off a letter to the Attorney General and told him to "RECONSIDER AND OPPOSE THIS PROPOSAL."  In his letter, Chris W. Cox, NRA's executive director,  said the bill deprives law-abiding americans of their constitutional rights without due process and said even though the Lautenberg legislation allows for an appeal, that is not enough.

The federal Brady Act currently prohibits those convicted of domestic abuse from buying a gun but says nothing about denying guns and explosives to know or suspected terrorists.  According to Lautenberg that loophole is not just a hypothetical problem.  He points to a GAO study that says between February and June of 2004 a "total of 44 firearm purchase attempts were made by individuals DESIGNATED AS KNOWN OR SUSPECTED TERRORISTS BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.  In 35 of those cases the FBI authorized the TRANSACTION TO PROCEED because field FBI agents were unable to find any disqualifying information within the federally prescribed three business days."

IT'S THE NRA VS ALBERTO GONZALES.  WANT TO PLACE ANY BETS ON WHO WILL WIN?

In other news ... OATMEAL KILLS RATS!

RATS have apparently taken over the city of CICERO, ILLINOIS.  According to Sara Olkon of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE the city has tried everything including CYANIDE GAS to get rid of them.  It didn't work. Cicero even has a RAT PATROL and town presidents like the current one, Larry Dominick, have won their jobs partly due to a campaign promise to get rid of the rats.

So in addition to more money, and more rat agents, Sara Olkon says the city is turning to a new brew: "A TASTY SCOOP OF TOXIC BIRD SEED and OATMEAL LACED WITH AN ANTI-COAGULANT THAT MAKES THE RATS BLEED TO DEATH."
