THERE'S A WAR GOING ON AND A WHITE-TIE DINNER AT THE WHITE HOUSE
May 08, 2007 7:50 AM
12 soldiers killed in Iraq over the weekend, and this morning's WASHINGTON POST features 2 front page, top of the fold stories on Iraq, and one huge color photo just below to go along with its front page feature entitled CAPITAL GOES GAGA OVER THE QUEEN FOR A DAY.
One Iraq article by Ann Scott Tyson talks about soldiers building concrete barriers at 3am in the morning on the edge of Baghdad's Sadr City to protect themselves from bombs, and the other by Jonathan Weisman and Thomas E. Ricks says September could be key deadline in the war.
"MANY OF MY REPUBLICAN COLLEAGUES HAVE BEEN PROMISED THEY WILL GET A STRAIGHT STORY ON THE SURGE BY SEPTEMBER" Republican Senator Gordon Smith tells the two reporters.
STRAIGHT STORY ON THE SURGE BY SEPTEMBER---WHY NOT DEMAND A STRAIGHT STORY ON THE SURGE RIGHT NOW? HOW MANY MORE TROOPS WILL DIE OR SUFFER HORRIFIC INJURIES BETWEEN NOW AND SEPTEMBER WHILE CONGRESS WAITS FOR ITS STRAIGHT STORY??
Also on the front page of the POST is an invitation to go to the front page of the paper's business section where this article by Lori Montgomery awaits readers: THE COST OF WAR UNNOTICED, WHY IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN HAVEN'T SQUEEZED THE AVERAGE AMERICAN'S WALLET. Montgomery says since September 11, 2001 Congress has authorized more than $609 BILLION to fight the wars and soon another $145 BILLION will be headed to the president's desk for his approval. The article says the United States is "VASTLY RICHER" now than it was in the days of the wars in Korea and Vietnam and total defense spending is only 4% of the gross national product.
And then reporter Montgomery explains it in a way we can all understand: "last year spending in Iraq amounted to less than 1 percent of the total economy---ABOUT AS MUCH AS AMERICANS SPENT SHOPPING ONLINE and LESS THAN HALF WHAT THEY SPENT AT WAL-MART."
But back to the Queen. One last day of expensive pageantry topped off by another dinner with President and Mrs. Bush the guests at the British ambassador's residence.

I was most upset with GMA's attempt to place Bush's lighter-side with the Queen as actually being funny and cute? He is an idiot and republicans have literally given this country away and our respect is pretty much gone with the world. Examples are: The rebellion at the world bank and talk of the UN having a parliment. Also, China buying more and more of our debt. As if China doesn't make enough profit from the United States. Dianne Sawyer, please do not take such a casual or even funny look at our shameful president ever again!

Steven Kohl, Please tell us more. From which websites, newscasts and print media do you get your singularly myopic view of our country and it's present administration? (big hint-it's a trick question)Creating shortcut for a return visit to find more of your remarkable insights into the state of the nation.

GW & cronies partying with the Queen and enjoying themselves at taxpayers expense, while soldiers working hard and dying in Iraq. What a life for GW.
