WHEN IT CAME TO AVANDIA, "A FEW TIMES I WAS OVER THE TOP, I JUST GOT CARRIED AWAY"

Dr. John B. Buse, MD, PHD., is one of the witnesses scheduled to testify before Rep. Henry Waxman's hearing on the FDA's Role in deciding the Safety of the diabetes type 2 drug Avandia.

If the NEW YORK TIMES article about him is any indication of what he will say, that WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6th hearing should be pretty interesting!

Reporter Stephanie Saul says Buse says he was intimidated by GLAXOSMITHKLINE because he raised safety concerns about its drug that has sales of $3 BILLION a year but he says GLAXO later apologized and he told Saul, "It was upsetting, but not life-alerting ... I hold NO ILL WILL toward GLAXO or any of its employees."

The article say Buse who is soon to become PRESIDENT of the American Diabetes Association was an "early and frequent critic of Avandia" and one of his best friends Dr. Burant was so concerned about what Buse was saying and the "heavy-handed way Galxo treated him" that he "never wrote a prescription for Avandia."

But Dr. Buse's past actions raises some questions too.

The article says Buse was a consultant to Parke-Davis,  a company that made REZULIN a diabetes drug he strongly supported.  It was taken off the market after it was linked to liver disease.  And the article goes on to say that BUSE now believes AVANDIA should STAY ON THE MARKET until Glaxo completes a very large clinical study to determine the risk it poses of heart attacks.  "'A few times I was over the top, I just got carried away,' he said of the early warnings about Avandia."
