ICE is Watching Their Children

Members of the CONGRESSIONAL HISPANIC CAUCUS have sent a letter to Julie Myers and Michael Chertoff at the Department of Homeland Security, expressing their concerns about reports that IMMIGRATION and CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT (ICE) AGENTS are spying on HEAD START programs geared toward serving the CHILDREN OF FARM WORKERS. 

The letter charges that ICE agents park near the centers AS EARLY AS 4am to see who drops off the children. The letter goes on to say that ICE and local law enforcement FOLLOW SCHOOL BUSES,  FOLLOW HEAD START STAFF ON THEIR LUNCH BREAKS, and at one center, "ARMED ICE AGENTS and LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT BROUGHT DETAINED PARENTS and FORCED THEM TO SIGN OUT THEIR CHILDREN."  The CHC says this intimidation is forcing frightened parents to take their children to work in the fields where they are exposed to unhealthy conditions.

Tomorrow a House subcommittee holds a hearing on the impact of ICE RAIDS on the CHILDREN of detained parents. A teacher will testify along with officials from ICE. After the hearing there will be a newser featuring a Catholic nun, Sister Kathy Thill, who is helping the victims of the recent raid on the Postville meat packing plant in Iowa.
