For the Petersons 'The Price is Right'

July 21, 2008 8:16 AM

Carmela and John Peterson have two problems.  Deer are destroying the landscape outside their Great Falls, Virginia home and Martina Caputy is their neighbor.  According to Marc Fisher, who writes for the WASHINGTON POST, sometimes as many as 11 deer dine on the Peterson's lush shrubs and green grass. So Carmela and her husband decided to get a wildlife damage-control permit and get rid of a couple of deer.  That's when Martina Caputy sprang into action.

Martina Caputy is the wife of Anthony Caputy.  Anthony Caputy is the doctor who in 1999 operated on television legend BOB BARKER, of "THE PRICE IS RIGHT" fame, to successfully unblock his carotid artery.  Fisher says Martina called Barker and told him what the Petersons had in store for the deer.

BOB BARKER LOVES ANIMALS!

In his Sunday Column for the Post, Fisher says the former game show host fired off a letter to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries saying if the hunt wasn't stopped, "the children would be catatonic, the neighbors would be up in arms, the fawns would be orphans and the does would be dead...all for the sake of a few flowers."

PETA got involved too and soon Carmela and John Peterson decided to meet with their neighbors.  Even though they most likely could have gotten the permit, the Petersons called off the deer hunt.  Fisher says "putting good relations with the neighbors first is a rare enough gesture these days that it ought to be celebrated, even if it does mean kissing the landscaping goodbye."

Deer weren't destroying the "landscape" as you stated. How would that even be possible? They were destroying "landscaping."

You can buy a liquid spray that makes the plants taste bad to the deer. It is harmless to wildlife. Using it would solve everyone's problem.

There are ways to keep deer away from shrubs other than killing. These folks should investigate at the nearest Greenhouse and they can tell you what to buy. I am pretty sure it comes in spray form you cna use with your graden hose.

Having a dog works. I know this sounds creepy but next time you get a hair cut, save the hair and hang it in a netted bag on the plants you want them to stay away from. I do this with my apple trees. Also, deer love straight paths and hate stepping on stones so consider a wide pebble border around planting beds or put stone pathways through the garden. They will learn not to go there. Also, don't plant things they love to eat like hostas. That said, it makes sense to cull properly in the fall if deer are causing road accidents. Then, all lives are at stake. Our town donates the venison to local shelters.

Martina Caputy should mind her own business. Great Falls is currently overrun with deer - the solution to which is herd control through limited hunting. Without such means of control, the deer population will invade the human world, where property destruction will surely ensue, and the method of herd control will become 'death by vehicle'.

People like Martina Caputy think the animals are cute and gentle, but does she ever consider that allowing skilled hunters to trim the herd is a very humane alternative to the painful, awful death known as roadkill...? Does the all-knowing Mrs. Caputy know that overpopulation of deer leads to death by starvation of weaker herd members?

Wake up Caputy... Your solution for you little furry friends is no solution at worst and starvation and awful deaths at best.

As more people build homes in the wilderness more and more wildlife become homeless, displaced, confused and hungry.
i say let the deer eat, non-native plant species are the real intruder (shrubs and flowers). we need to go back to wild grasses and wild flowers that require no water or maintenance and focus on saving our world instead of stupid flowers and shrubs.
santa fe new mexico is a wonderful example of ordinances in the historic district that allow only native plant species-that in itself discourages deer who can feast on the same stuff in the wild instead of feating on sweet smelling BAIT.

Scott, hunting the deer wasn't the point of Bob's argument, the neighborhood is NOT a hunting ground. My first concern would be any children in the neihborhood, stray bullets etc. All the spray, hair clippings, dog, etc advice seems very helpful and SAFE. Regular deer hunting in the Fall, donating the meat, sounds good too! Everybody wins, well except the deer...

Deer are gentle animals who can form bonds with humans (who are trustworthy). What is more important sentient creatures with souls or flowers? If you live among wildlife, you need to live in harmony with them as best as possible. Someday we will all be held accountable for every creature (Hebrews 4:13).
Venison can cause sickness if not tested for disease and who wants to eat animals anyway?

Why is it that the hunting of animals elicits such an overwhelming outrage but the daily murder of unborn children passes without notice?

Posted by: Judy | Jul 29, 2008 8:49:49 PM

Jan, I doubt that when the Bible was written, God truly meant that if we killed deer, we would "get in trouble". There's another verse that states He put man over all the animals of the air, land, and sea. Do you tell people who fish that they will be "held accountable" for their actions too? Nowhere in my Bible does it say that we have to all be vegetarians...didn't God provide manna and quail for some of His followers? Not everything in the Bible can be twisted to support each individual's cause. And Judy, I am with you 100%...why are people more upset over animals being killed than unborn babies' lives being taken?

30 million deer versus how many people,
that are diminishing more and more wild
habitat? With man over all things,
the future truely is bleak!
Pave Paradise, put up a parking lot.

People who want to kill animals should go hunting in a proper, regulated enviroment. Killing wayward animals who are encroaching on peoples property are usually doing so because we have taken their feeding grounds and turned them into a parking lot.

Comparing aborting unborn fetuses (not babies) with killing off innocent animals is not even worthy of comment.
