White House Edits ABC News Then Takes it Back

November 02, 2007 12:21 PM

ABC News' Jonathan Karl Reports: News flash -- The White House has selectively edited a report on Iraq, taking out negative information and distorting the report's meaning.

This isn't about intelligence or weapons of mass destruction. It's my report on Thursday's evening on World News with Charles Gibson.

WATCH THE FULL REPORT HERE.

The report noted "violence in Iraq is down and down considerably" in virtually every category, but my report also noted that "there has been almost no political progress on the national level" and that "U.S. officials know military gains won't mean much if the Iraqi government doesn't get its act together."

The White House sent out an edited version of my report in an official White House publication called "White House Iraq Update."

Iraq Update is put together by the National Security Council and distributed by the White House via email to government officials, Congressional staffers, radio & television talk show hosts, journalists and foreign policy experts.

As edited by the White House, my report looked like an unqualified declaration of success in Iraq. The White House e-mail publication is headlined: "In Case You Missed It:  "Violence Is Down in Iraq and Down Considerably."

Here's is what it included from my report:

CHARLES GIBSON, ABC NEWS: "At the Pentagon today, military officials gave one of the most upbeat assessments of the security situation in Iraq that we have heard since the opening months of the war.  Jonathan Karl is at the Pentagon tonight. Jon?"

JONATHAN KARL, ABC NEWS: "Charlie, nobody over here is anywhere near ready to declare victory.  But the military statistics tell an unmistakable story.  Violence in Iraq is down. And down considerably.

"Baghdad's marketplaces are slowly coming back to life, as violent attacks in Iraq have fallen to less than half of what they were a year ago.  Until recently, the trends had been deadly and consistent, violence steadily increasing to an all-time high in June.  Since then, however, attacks have fallen four straight months -- in every category."

LT. GEN. RAY ODIERNO: "What I'm confident about, is the progress we're making I think is real."

KARL: "Roadside bombs fell in October to an average of 20 a day.  Still high, but the lowest level since October 2004.  Iraqi civilian deaths have fallen to a third of where they were a year ago.  And after the deadliest summer ever for US forces in Iraq, US combat deaths fell to 29 last month, the lowest level in more than 3 years."

MICHAEL O'HANLON, BROOKINGS INSTITUTION:  "The fact that we're seeing a durable trend over half a year time period tells us something real is going on.  It doesn't mean, however, that it's guaranteed to last. …"

Here is what the White House left out:

O'HANLON:   ... and it doesn't answer the questions about political progress.

KARL:  In fact, there's been almost no political progress on the national level, and U.S. officials know military gains won't mean much if the Iraqi government doesn't get its act together, which is one reason the Pentagon doesn't even want to use the word "winning."

[To Defense Secretary]  You're not ready to say we're winning, that the surge is working --

ROBERT GATES [Defense Secretary]:  (From tape.)  I think – I think that those end up being loaded words.  I think we have been very successful.  We need to continue being successful.

KARL:  Today, Defense Secretary Gates said that the reduction in violence would not have been possible without the surge of 30,000 additional troops into Iraq, but, Charlie, those troops are going home in the coming months, raising the question of whether the violence will go up when they leave.

GIBSON:  Jonathan Karl tonight reporting from the Pentagon, thanks.

After ABC News expressed concern about the selective editing of the report, White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe acknowledged it was inappropriate and agreed to sent out the full text of the ABC report.

"The White House understands your concern and the full text of your report will be released to the same distribution list so that recipients have a chance to see what the entire report was about."

to veteranD---I log on to as many sites as possible to get all sides of what info is available. To answer your query, I post in hopes that my call for real freedom will be heard. I know most people "go along" to keep their jobs. We know the poor unemployed have little to no voice. Thank you for serving our country,VeteranD. You of all people know what freedom we have has cost. I'm over 70 and have observed the good, the bad, and the ugly. Our verterans have always been "the best of the good". Why do we continue to throw our best in the volcanoes to "appease the gods"?

OMG...WATCH THE NEWS...manipulation of the media! (Watch...not to be confused with the watch fob shown before the girl was killed in The "Good" Shepherd CIA movie) People who actually have the COURAGE to say something against the government and the corporate run media...better be careful...they'll say you're all CONSPIRACY THEORISTS WHO THINK THE GOVERNMENT IS OUT TO GET YOU and put you in a "Beautiful" padded cell. Corruption, Insider Trading (ala Admiral Poindexter Codename BASKETBALL gone underground), illegal heinous defense programs inspired by psychotic nazi's used on innocent americans (see FOIA docs and William Arkin May 12, 2006 Washington Post "Early Warning"), nah...you're ALL NUTS...just a FIGMENT of your imagination...just ask Sen. Hillary Clinton, Rep. Carol Shea Porter, ect...you find out dirty secrets...they and others of 'like mind' will find a way to "fix your wagon"...or incorporate little media "hints" within real or BS news to make your behave...Shame on You All for actually believing we have a Constitution and Bill of Rights...AMERICA LAND OF LIBERTY, FREEDOM AND JUSTICE FOR ALL...IF YOU REALLY THINK THAT THEN YOU ARE DELUSIONAL. Yes, we better all shut up and look the other way or else we might get a government sponsored shot of thorazine to put us all in a cATaTONIC state...that will teach us for speaking the truth. Thorazine...which ironically anagramed is Thor E. NAZI...just a coincidence. BS in the media? Nah...your all crazy.

Anyone remember the movie Network?

Do any of you believe there was a time when we were getting the whole truth? Sorry. Manipulation of truth and outright lies have been around as long as man. The people who define history are the wealthy: Bankers, Politicians, Media, etc.

NOooooo! They wouldn't do that!
What is this world coming to anyway?
Oh my goodness!

in other words what i'm trying to say is forget about the quaint notion of returning to a good and just america, that train has left the station a long time ago. keep the interest of you and your family in the forefront and learn to survive the present reality

a pliable society is where the majority is silent, while a minority is marginalized

observe the actions and not the words of the wealthy and powerful, for they have the greatest fear of losing both.

Posted by: jim north | Nov 4, 2007 8:01:08 PM

the development of chaos is precided by complexity and mistrust. this leads to a society which can easily be manipulated to a desired state of control, whether it be in the best interest of one or many.

ROFL I can not believe you have the gall to complain about only selective quoting, when the Media is famous for it and distorting comments by taking them out of context. As you also noted there was not way you could do a positive story in Iraq without throwing out some negative. How about every negative report you do also include some positive. This is just another example of why the public has no faith in the Media any longer.

I guess it' about the power within Bush and the mimic he learned from his dad. I thnk they need to get rid of some of the pentagon same old stuff on the reports but that the conservative way it's based on history and mimic this and that and nothing changes if you do not find better solutions in a war battle. Same stuff for the past years in the pentagon the conservatives have not changes there winfall in politics it's has stayed decourse again thats the conservative way it get s old and sounds old.

BOO-HOO, you all should have impeached Bush before it got this far. Dems are too lazy and shortsighted to finish the job they were elected for, and Republicans are too busy worshipping this idiot. Conservatives think he's "God's answer to Big-Money Religion", and Liberals are too disorganized to defend the Constitution. Truth is, you are still too screwed-up to Impeach him, you're just trying to hang on until the next election does the "dirty work" for you.

Anyone remember Hitler's Tactics?

Posted by: ididit4u | Nov 3, 2007 8:22:24 PM

Winston Smith lives and works for the Bush White House.

Posted by: jurassicpork | Nov 3, 2007 7:26:09 PM

If the White House thinks we are now winning and the Iraqis are stepping up, they have no recourse but to stand down and leave Iraq, according to their own set goals.

Let them release this drivel to the world (it is no different from the lies we have gotten from them all along) and try to save face by getting the ---- out of Iraq now!

It may be our last chance to avoid more of the World War III threats coming from this odious group of disingenous and hypocritical corporate criminals that currently inhabit all levels of the Bush Administration.

Surprisingly this reporter is still alive. Considering many reporters who went to IRaq were killed by gunfire.
However this government is getting away with such horrific anti-democracy methods of control is beyond me...

My fellow Americans just don't seem to care that our nation, along with The Constitution upon which it was founded, is being flushed-down the NWO toilet by our nations' bought and paid for politicians and media.

While the Oligarchs warn and insite fear in the sheeple about the prospect of terrorism, they at the same time leave our border wide open, and fund and conduct illegal wars overseas that do nothing but encite the terrorism which their Orwellian Laws like the Patriot Act and The Real ID Act pretend to protect us from.

Wake up America! It's not about protecting you from terrorism, or saving the planet from Global Warming, or any of that other fear-mongering garbage the sold-out, mainstream media feeds you 24/7. It's about feeding the bankers and the military industrial complex, and facilitating the ruling elite's ability to ratchet-down control over the American people, placing us into a total control grid where they can surveille, track and control everywhere we go and everything we do. It's the groundwork for totalitarianism, my friends. It's New World Order plan of Bush, Clinton, Giuliani, et.al., being executed quite beautifully.

You're a victim of mass mind control--a frog in a pot. In order to cook the frog, you don't throw him into a pot of boiling water. If you do, he'll resist and jump-out. What you do instead is, you turn the heat-up REAL SLOW, and by the time the water is boiling he won't be able to jump out anymore, because it's too late--he's already doomed.
Go Ron Paul!!

Who believe any censored news we receive by Bush and the news media. ABC track record of propaganda and BS for this administration has been great for their correction with Bush's administration. There is no information that I would believe from Bush, Cheney, his administration and his controled and censored news media.
Lets see, the method of counting the dead and wounded has been "revised again" but Bush's administration to achieve the results he wishes.
Bush in now has the insurgents which were (?and are? still?) killing our soldiers on his payroll (which of course is our tax $) and what are they preforming for him? there are Sunni and are they killing the shitte.
There was also a report by a soldiers that a majority of them were staying in the own bunker and staying in place, instead of moving around to be killed by road side bombs.
Yes Iraq is really safe, the only people there are our forced soldiers, Blackwater, well paid cowboys.
Shame these people for the war don't give our soldiers a break and serve a tour or two. See how brave they are to sit in their air condition office, giving ours orders to do what they are to chicken hawk to do, to steal Iraq's resources.
Many diplomats objected to a US State Department's decision last week to identify "prime candidates" who will have to take a one-year post in Iraq or lose their jobs.
One diplomat said it was a "potential death sentence" to serve in Baghdad, where insurgent attacks are frequent.
Rice on Friday conceded it was a "sensitive issue" but said people must serve where they were needed and Iraq was a priority.

Iraq's deadly insurgent groups have financed their war against U.S. troops in part with hundreds of thousands of dollars in U.S. rebuilding funds that they've extorted from Iraqi contractors in Anbar province.
The payments, in return for the insurgents' allowing supplies to move and construction work to begin, have taken place since the earliest projects in 2003, Iraqi contractors, politicians and interpreters involved with reconstruction efforts said.

By granting safe passage to a truck loaded with $10,000 in goods, they receive a "protection fee" that can buy more weapons and vehicles. Sometimes the insurgents take the goods, too.

Now you know what it's like when people edit your hardwork. Just like when ABC arbitrarily deletes comments from their online stories.

What, you didn't realize this was already happening? Wake up. You'll get more of the same when Hillary gets in office.

Posted by: Dustin | Nov 3, 2007 12:59:29 PM

You report that "violence in Iraq is down and down considerably" in virtually every category." Looking at the evidence, it's clear that the official figures regarding Iraqi death tolls are absurdly low. The official "count" of Iraqi deaths was 38,415 through October, 2007. In October, 2006 Johns Hopkins epidemiologists, using commonly accepted, highly regarded statistical methods, came up with a number of 655,000 Iraqis killed in the war. That was a year ago. The number is most likely closer to a million now.

The problem with ABC and other mainstream media outlets is that they repeatedly use as their primary sources information government entities that have a proven track record of obfuscating the truth. That's parroting, not reporting.

People who throw out the term democracy need to get a clue. This country is a republic, not a democracy.

Get over the Bush bashing. It's not as if this is the first administration which has operated outside of the constitution or other legal bounds.

Now back to the BS.

Since when did we ever have a liberal media? Do you think that Time/Warner or General Electric (maker of jet engines and nuclear submarines) is in the business of NOT making money? Why would ATT and Verizon allow the NSA to illegally wiretap American citizens from their office buildings six months prior to 9/11? Get real! The media is owned by corporations that are getting rich supporting this corrupt and illegal regime, here at home. Impeach Bush/Cheney.

Posted by: bob crawford | Nov 3, 2007 11:13:40 AM

I don't see much of a difference between this and ABC not reports all the information in a new item. The bad and the ugly come first and there is never a retraction. ABC has also played Bob Woodruff to the max without putting out for the Iraqi people who help them in reporting live stories. So change your ways ABC and Brain Ross. More of us don't buy you whining everyday.

Posted by: s63m | Nov 3, 2007 10:11:50 AM

Wah wah. You've been complacently pimped since Bush took office.

Posted by: WJZ | Nov 3, 2007 9:21:28 AM

Wow, it is amazing how well the Liberal Media, (the big 3 channels, CNN and other wildly tilted media sources)has done their job of brainwashing people. Through all the years of manipulation, lies, half-truths, distortions, and other junk reporting, they have succeeded in twisting so many people into thinking they should believe what the media says.
It is obvious by the shrill comments and maniacal rantings of these screaming liberals and media followers that they have been brainwashed into thinking that the USA is the problem in the world and that everything is a conspiracy and that the government is trashing the constitution.
WELL WAKE UP and smell your country. IF you made those same comments in many countries in the world you would have already had your head cut off!
You better start understanding how your comments are pushing us closer to total government rule and NO FREEDOM WHATSOEVER.
You can rant all you want in our country, but before you do you better get a grip on reality and realize you are in a country where you don't have to worry about your car blowing up because some radical fundamentalist put a bomb in your tailpipe. And that's due to our President having the guts to do what is necessary to protect us.
Keep on ranting your twisted ideas and find out later, when you vote in some wimp as president who won't protect our country, how you have done nothing but tear down our country and destroy our protection.
These are some of the reasons a "real" American will never vote for a weak and short sighted Liberal Democrat for President.
We want to live free because the President has the guts to protect us. And didn't try to turn our country into one big hand waiting for the government to give us stuff!
We want to decide how to live our lives. We don't want the government to tell us when we can eat and what work we can do and what we can say and be scared of the next terrorist attack. AND we don't really care if France or Germany or Iran likes us or not.
We want strength from our government not wimps.
